TGS 2005: Armored Core, Tenchu going next-gen

From Software's noisy robots and quiet ninjas under development for the next wave of consoles.

From Software today announced that it is bringing two of its biggest franchises into the next generation with Tenchu 360 (working title) and Armored Core 4.

From Software acquired the ninja-centric stealth action Tenchu brand from Activision last year and has since released versions of the game for the PlayStation 2 and PSP in Japan. The announcement of Tenchu 360 offered little insight into the game other than to say it would be released in 2006.

Details are similarly slim on Armored Core 4, but it will be released for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, with the latter version due in summer of 2006. This is the first next-generation game for the long-running mech combat series, and it's the first installment to appear on a non-Sony console. Since debuting in 1996, 10 Armored Core games have appeared on the PlayStation and PS2, with another due on the PSP later this year.

The series has made its name for the wealth of customization features it offers players, letting them create their own distinct mechs from hundreds of interchangeable parts. The latest installment of the series, Armored Core: Nine Breaker for the PlayStation 2, hit shelves in North America earlier this week. Check back later for GameSpot's full review.

    Tenchu was my first ever game bought on a PS, this brings up feelings of nostalgia. Also the game developers who made Tenchu on DS should not be included on the development on the 360 version, if they already are. I have to admit I’m more of a PS3 guy but if they make Tenchu 360 a great game, worthy of a high score from gamespot.com I might convert, who knows. But if they are in the making of a PS3 version, I will most likely just grab a copy on PS3 when I get one (2045 AD).

    Whoa From Software acquired the Tenchu series?? And they already pumped out new games in japan for it ??? =( That sucks!! How come we havent heard anything about a US release of those games??

    man if somebody would just work on adding in a bunch of animations to Tenchu and doing alot of work on the clunky movement and bring back the mission editor that let you build stages and what not the game would blow up and sell awesome. Tenchu 2 with its mission editor is one of my most valued games. I cant count how long me and my friends have spent designing maps for each other. I'd kill for one with much larger maps, cooler terrain and better movement controls and throw in all the awesome stealth kills they have added since Tenchu 2 like double kills and ceiling kills. *crys*
