Imangi Studios' endless running sequel surpasses Angry Birds Space as "fastest growing mobile game."
Temple Run 2 has surged past Angry Birds Space to become the "fastest growing mobile game" ever. Developer Imangi Studios has announced that the game was downloaded over 50 million times across iOS, Android, and Kindle devices in its first 13 days. Angry Birds Space needed 35 days to reach 50 million downloads.
Breaking the figure down further, since Temple Run 2's January 17 launch, the game was downloaded 3.85 million times per day, or 160,000 per hour, or even 2,671 copies per minute. The game saw 6 million day-one downloads, on its way to 20 million in four days.
Temple Run 2 still has work to do if it wants to catch its predecessor, as the original Temple Run has been downloaded over 170 million times.
The Temple Run franchise was created by husband-and-wife development team Keith Shepherd and Natalia Luckyanova in Raleigh, North Carolina. The studio has since added a team of additional developers.
The series has expanded outside of the game realm through a number of licensing partnerships, including one with Disney Pixar for Temple Run: Brave, which featured characters and environments from Disney's animated film.
To all the haters, yes it's obviously free, but it also shows how much popular this game is.
I love the first version, I'll try this out on my Galaxy Note.
Quite the phenomenon isn't it. I believe that casual gaming will forever be gone re consoles because of games like this. Nintendo will be the biggest loser because of it.
My friend showed my Mother Temple Run maybe six months ago. I had never seen casual gamer addiction before then... it completely took over her recreational life. She stopped reading or sewing and spent several hours a day playing the game.
She was an avid reader, had just purchased a Kindle a few months before and downloaded dozens of books to it. All of the sudden all she would do was play Temple Run.
I just don't understand the addiction to these shallow and repetitive games.
I've never even heard of this game. Don't know if I even want to play it as it seem monotonous. This game would drive me crazy.
50 million downloads for a free game means nothing! Comparing it to a paid game like Angry Birds is totally ridiculous. Seriously. How does that make any sense saying its a faster growing game? This crap IAP scam will NEVER hit the instant phenomenon of Angry birds.
@WingChopMasta both are crap
@WingChopMasta angry birds is a paid game only on IOS. On android is free.
@fakharakhtar362 Not when it first came out. They released a free lite version after.
It is still on the top paid apps too. STILL.
Free games and their download number is the dumbest way to graph success. Let's talk about revenue. If THAT can beat out Angry Birds then it is news. This is just a sponsored ad masked as news!
I do wonder how much money they made directly from the game's in-app purchases. If just 1% of the people that downloaded it spend 99 cents on it then they'd have made $500k easy over the last week or so.
Just a guess, but Disney probably made as much if not more $ from selling temple run 2 in those two weeks than the combined sales of Epic Micky Mouse.
Played the first one on friend's ipad, didn't think it was anything special. But 50 million in 2 weeks time is very impressive.
Hack, if I was a developer making expensive games on PC, PS3 or 360. I'd be wondering why I haven't moved on making smartphone or tablet games already.
