Telltale's The Walking Dead sells 8.5 million episodes

By Pav Tishakov, Work Experience

Five-chapter series generates over $40 million in sales for developer Telltale; mobile sales account for 25 per cent of total.

Telltale Games' episodic adventure The Walking Dead has sold 8.5 million episodes to date. The title, which has been predominantly sold digitally, has generated over $40 million in revenue since the release of Episode One: A New Day in April 2012, CEO Dan Connors told the Wall Street Journal.

Originally released on Xbox Live, PlayStation 3, and PC, the series later transitioned to iOS, with mobile sales contributing 25 per cent to the overall sales figure. Sales of the widely acclaimed adventure were boosted by festive promotional offers on Steam and Xbox Live, where the game saw a 50 per cent discount. Additionally, the first episode, titled A New Day, was offered for download free of charge.

A second season of the game is also in the works. "We also have The Walking Dead signed up for another season, so we're gonna use a lot of the revenue we're generating to continue to grow the company," said Telltale boss Dan Connors. Connors also said that each customer spent an average of $16, which works out at over $40m in total revenue. Details about the storyline and launch date of season 2 have not yet been announced.

The series deserves the recognition and acclaim it has been receiving. Fantastic storytelling in my opinion and interesting characters. The interaction between Lee and Clementine is just great.

I just finished this game yesterday, and it is soooooo goood!  I'm so glad there is going to be a second season... unfortunately for me, I have to wait until the hard copy hits retail shelves... I don't do digital. You all can, but I don't. I like to have something tangible when I give them "real" money.

Just me...

I just started playing this game a couple days ago. On episode 4 now, and I'm a little annoyed at the lack of freedom of your choices. You really only ever have 2 options. Either be a "nice caring person" or be negligent. You are never given the option to just be evil. To just do horrible things. You can't kill most of the people you meet. Even when you are given the option to decide someone's fate it's more often than not a case of "letting" them die rather than callously stabbing them in the back purposely. The Fallout series has more freedom in choice than this, plus it's freeroam. All of this not even mentioning that a lot of your choices make no real difference.

So are they going to use any of that money to fix the gazillion bugs ?

Maybe in the next season, your decisions will actually affect gameplay.  We can all dream.

@gatsbythepig How does it not affect the gameplay??? I decided to leave Lilly on the road after she cold-bloodedly shot Carley in the face so that makes -2 survivors in the matter of a second, how didnt that affect my game play??

WCK619
WCK619 like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@GamerOuTLaWz  @gatsbythepig Doesn't matter if you leave Lilly or not. If you decide to keep her she just steals the RV and runs off on her own once you stop at the train. So it was going to be -2 survivors no matter what you chose.

Next season , co-op multilayer with Kinect voice commands because no other platform supports voice input. You're bad language and decision making will decide your friends outcome & story arc.

This has already been said a few times....but I'll back it up; Telltale deserve every cent of it, one of the best and most interesting gaming experiences of the year and helps show the industry that the consumers actually do value true quality story telling over mindless run&gun titles.

@tmrtyn THANK YOU! I couldn't have said it better myself! I'm so burned out on Muliplayer its not even funny. I was asking fellow gamers what would be a good game to get, most of them,(I kid you not.) told me to get the walking dead... so I did... and WOW!!! IT WAS SOOOOO GOOOD! Even though there are those that could argue that the gameplay is virtually non existent ... its more tethered together through some forms of limited interactivity...lol... still one of the best experiences I had in gaming...

It would sell even more if Steam had it at £10 or at most £15 as i think games like this is too much for £20 pluss.

After To the Moon in 2011, I was worried about story in gaming for 2012. Then came TWD Season 1, and the rest is history. I haven't actually completed all 5 (just started on the 4th), but I can't see anything spoiling the game.

By Season 4 Clemetine is going to grow up to be a strider / assassin like Molly.

Sounds pretty dope. I'll wait for Season 2 to be completed and buy the whole season instead of waiting 2 months for a new episode.

On a technical note, I hope TellTale works out the annoying freeze glitches and choppy reticle movements.

See that publishers?  Not every game needs to be a pandering to the masses hand holding shooter that focuses on MP lol.

I'm so excited for season 2, I really hope they do a great job like this one, or even surpass it. This game deserves the good sales.

@sadscooterpipe Everyone join me as I point and laugh at this person, Nelson Muntz style. HA HA!

Seriously though, there's no shame in paying full price for it (which I did). It's just a darn good game.

This.  This was great!  I can completely hear the whole of the internet doing this right now. *smiles*

I just happened to have 800 MS fake monies sitting around, so I'll have to wait a bit.  I would hate to make it 1-3 and be left hanging.

@sadscooterpipe  @FAIL_TR0LL I paid $12.50 for PC and I would pay thrice that and still feel like I got a good deal. Half price or full price, its totally worth it.

This was once in only a few times that I've actually cared about a story in a game. I played through the whole thing in a single weekend. I couldn't stop playing it, I had to see what was goin to happen next. Awesome series and you can count me in for season 2.

Very good news for mobile, and hopefully that means even more games will get developed for mobile. :)

Now if they could invest some of that money into fixing game-breaking bugs (lost savegames / can't even launch the game) introduced with episode 2 that have never been fixed.  I just love buying a game on Steam and then having to download a cracked version--which works perfectly, incidentally--instead to actually play it.

FAIL_TR0LL
FAIL_TR0LL

@pariah23 Yeah, I loved the game, but my 360 version had some pretty stupid bugs in it too. My save game wouldn't show up until I signed out then signed back in...every single time I launched the game.

That really sucks to completely lose your save game. Inexcusable

It's 8.5 million episodes sold. Saying "8.5 million copies" makes it sounds like full game sales.

Hurvl
Hurvl

$16 times 8,5 million is 136 million, which means that almost 100 million was not revenue.

Also "over $40 million in sales" and "over $40m in total revenue" is not the same thing.

This is a good game but I also hope Telltale works on a second Back to the Future game as well, since the first game was FANTASTIC

 @Poodger

That Michael J. Fox voice impersonator was spot on fantastic!  And of course, the original Christopher Lloyd doing voice overs for Doc.  The game deserves more recognition, it was a great piece of work.

@Poodger Yeah, get Back to the Back to the Future.
