Ohio 15-year-old only left bedroom to secure snacks and take shower, leading to "severe dehydration" and need for intravenous fluid replenishment.
An Ohio teenage boy was hospitalized this week after a four-day Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 marathon led to "severe dehydration," reports local NBC affiliate WCMH-TV. According to the boy's mother, the Columbus teen only emerged from his room to grab snacks and to take a short shower.
The boy collapsed multiple times after playing Modern Warfare 3 for "at least four days" and was admitted to a nearby hospital, where doctors placed an IV to replenish his lost fluids. He is expected to be just fine, but his mother has taken away his Xbox 360.
Activision had not returned requests for comment as of press time.
Emergency physician at Nationwide Children's Hospital Dr. Mike Patrick told the news outlet that gamers should exercise common sense. He recommends drinking plenty of fluids, taking breaks for physical activity, and getting sleep.
Earlier this month, a Diablo III marathon session resulted in the death of an 18-year-old Taiwanese man in an Internet cafe.
they really need to educate kids on this in school... but come on... does 15 year old have common sense on this matter.... maybe 10 is excusable...
@DLobotomist This is common sense bud. Any sane person knows, and this is SELF-EVIDENT, that a 4 day marathon of any video game while simultaneously depriving your body of fluids is just asinine.
I love how people will try to blame gaming for this. Also, props to the doctor for exercising enough restraint to not just tell the mother that her son is an idiot.
"Secure snacks." He's alive, right? I laughed very hard. That's often how I speak when I'm hungry: "Must... secure... frozen... burritos..."
Natural selection at it's finest, seriously dehydration, he thought to get snacks, but figured water was for losers or something?
If people keep getting this retarded, we're gonna end up with a 10 minute pop up at the start of every game and at 30 minute interevals reminding us to eat/sleep/drink/move... There's going to be less game than warnings!
@JimmeyBurrows Water's noobsauce yo. I'll bet that kid drank nothing but mountain dew code red. Probably pickled his liver with sugar.
@HIGHMAX45 shut up moronu dont know why we gamer addicts get addicted to gamesto releive our tensions of real actual lifeif u dont understand us than dont talk shit ok
@Yuyutsu_152 Wow somebody got offended from that comment? Really? Lol. I get what you mean even though you said it in such non-sense. No offense. And what you just told me is... actually irrelevant to what I'm talking about. You talk about gamers gaming to relieve tensions and my comment is just to express how I feel about stupid people who value gaming rather than their health (or LIVES). Don't even bother replying because I don't want to waste my time with an immature kid like you.
imagine getting to heaven an telling God ,i'm really sorry but i died trying to unlock perks, achievements!its plain stupidity ur conscience should tell u that!
i think people don't take their life too serious!you can't value a video game over that!lifes more than fun and games!plz learn to take the recommended 30 min break in between games!u have more years ahead!
omg... so many comments.. 1. why should activision comment on it? beside being polite i guess; i' m sorry but am i missing something? if i sell bananas and some idiotic with renal failure at baseline decide to eat a whole basket of them and end up with arrythmias... is his lack of common sense, or lack of information by his doctor (which I REALLY doubt a doctor, especially a nephrologist -being a doctor myself- will make such stupid mistake) note: this will rarely happen, just to put an easy sample. 2. wth!?!?! is worng with mothers this days!?!?! 1st the kid has no common sense, and then the mother!?!?! You dont have to have too much inside to try to bring some tray for ur kid with at least juice and a sandwish. As teenager the kid might be and want to play it rebel, he will appreciate it. And that is of course, becasue the parents already failed to put boundaring in gaming time. 3. for the .... a dont know how many times.... the 18yo case DID NOT. die for a 2 days marathon... can we say that? NO!!! the same way we cant say he die because of no eating/drinking in a gaming marathon. Can we say that the last is very unlikely? yes. Unless he had underlying disease, that prevent him from ketosis, could not concentrate urine and another hundred other stuff. In top of everything, if you die bc of no eating or drinking you will 1st come dehydrated, confussed, lethargic... and so on until you die... and for what i read about it in a kotaku article the guy was still sitting!!! sitting holding the keyboard!!! Could he have die of an arrhythmia because electrolutes imbalance due to lack of fluids? yes, but again bring me to underlying disease (which is possible) - the 18yo likely had a baseline underliying disease, that precipated this (of course i cant assure that, is a speculation, just less ridiculous that the premise, because i have not examine or seeing an autopsy) What happen to the kid on this article is the likely course, even if he would have not pay attention to s/s, he would have come confussed at some point -far point- .... and finally collapse (would like to think the mother would have notice the change in behavioral, assuming the kid is still ignoring feeling THAT bad) That said, im not saying that if you are a young adult you should be ok doing this. In an ideal world, everyone will know that IV drug abuse give you hep c, hiv, endocarditis; that alcohol damage you in an infinitive different ways, that cocaine can produce sudden death in young adults without heart problem because a MI, and that YOU SHOULD NOT DO ANYTHING WITHOUT STOPING TO EAT AND DRINK, .... GUESS WHAT EVEN WORKING AND STUDYING (which supprissely happens)... but then again, as an nightfloater MD, i will not have a job, or it will be very easy....in an ideal world. enjoy....
@chang_1910 Waaaay to much too read...
@warhawk-smakaho probably, but at least is numbered. ..... i went into a small rant, im tired of reading this article.... that are based in immmature, lack of common sense gamers, with lack of common sense parents, or no parents; without ANY objective information that lead to a bias of cause-consecuence. i would love to see the autopsy done and release to public....
"Emergency physician at Nationwide Children's Hospital Dr. Mike Patrick told the news outlet that gamers should exercise common sense." Yes. :) He's 15, not 5, but where's his common sense?
There going to need to add a warning thing to tell people to still take care of themselves while playing, if this continues.
well id say bad parenting but this kids liks 15 any one at least 15 should know better to feed them selfs let alone get a cup of water
The only comment i could ever see Activision possibly making, would be in relation to the fact that the 15 year old in question was playing a game that held an age restriction of 16, therefore he should'nt have even been playing it in the first place.
As pointed out by a poster below, i totally overlooked the age rating issue.
"Activision had not returned requests for comment as of press time."
Why would they? What has this got to do with them? They only made the game, they're not responsible for how children abuse themselves - that would be the job of the parents.
15 is high school age right? i mean damn when i was in high school (which wasnt that long ago) something like this would be fatal to a persons rep. He will never live it down.
If I was going to almost die from playing a game, it wouldn't be this. I would rather die playing something good.
MY GOD another one of these incidents. Stupid kid, stupid choices, stupid life to waste playing a game for 4 days.
LET THESE INCIDENTS HERE FORE BE KNOWN AS THE:
MAKE LOVE NOT WARCRAFT PHALLASIES!
Someone get a pail for this boy to $hit in too.
wow, textbook example of an unfit parent.first off, CoD is rated 'M - 18+' kid shouldnt have even been playing it.secondly, who the hell would let their kid stay locked in their room for 4 days straight?! guess giving your kid an xbox and allowing him self-imposed exile is easier than actually parenting...
I kinda Just wonder why his parents didn't you know.. do there job as a parent and make sure the kid was eating and drinking properly... also the kid is an Idiot.. Even when i was bloody 8 i knew better then to do a game marathon without making sure i kept myself fed and hydrated
I can't believe how long it took me to notice this:
"Ohio 15 year old boy collapses after CoD marathon"
Ok, So.... he had a collapse, because of a marathon, of a game that he shouldn't even be playing be in the first place?....
Its amusing to hear about people dying or being malnourished when they do a weekender/binge on a video game. I use to binge as much or more than these victim back in the days of Atari 2600, NES, Genesis and Quake 2 or 3.
First The Diablo Guy now this seriously are people that addicted to the game to where you can't feel yourself getting hungry or thirsty this is a new level of stupid! Think about it after you finish a match you have to wait for the game to sync up, find people, load the round that's like 50sec to a minute and I am sure his body told him he was hungry or thirsty! and I don't know about you guys but after about 3-4 hours 5 tops my eyes and head starts to hurt! MY LIFE > COD... For that guy MY Life < COD sad -_-
@DESTROYRS_F8 Yea and he died! now this idiot.... When I was 15 I was outside playing road rash on bicycles much more interesting :D
Achievement Unlocked [Deaths Door]
(Loose Consciousness during DM or TDM game modes)
On a serious note, why did his parents feel this was healthy behaviour.
Another f***ing idiot that almost killed himself cause he's... a F***ING IDIOT!!! Daamn man... the game aint going nowhere so WTF!? Mommy aint gonna feed you and wipe your azz while you play til you drop dead lol
The last two generations are NO different than any others , unless you have "facts" backing that and ALL that that entails.
When someone has something bad happen to them the best think to do is have a ton of compassion , you know "salt on a wound" ?
TRY being nice instead of calling others "stupid" and "dumb".
