Capcom's Yoshinori Ono cites illegal download concerns over game's absence after calling SFIV's Windows edition "number one in piracy."
Street Fighter IV gained substantial critical acclaim upon its release for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in February 2009, but PC gamers had to wait until July before gaining access to the game. As it turns out, Capcom's delay did little to deter software theft, as series producer Yoshinori Ono said in a recent interview with Japanese gaming site 4Gamer that while SFIV on the PC was a strong seller, it was also "number one in piracy."
As relayed by gaming blog Andria Sang, Ono went on to note that Capcom has largely ruled out releasing Super Street Fighter IV on the PC, due primarily to SFIV's piracy problem. Explaining this rationale, Ono said that while he was happy that piracy allowed more gamers to experience SFIV, Capcom cannot allow the game to be considered "free" in certain regions, due to the impact that mentality would have on the intellectual property.
The possibility of a PC release still remains, though, as Ono said that since the arcade version--which is due in Japan in December--runs off of Taito's DirectX-based Type X2 board, the Windows version is essentially already complete.
However, the company would first need to find an effective piracy solution. Unfortunately for PC gamers, that solution won't be Valve's digital distribution service Steam, as Ono said that using it would preclude too many people from buying the game.
A remixed version of SFIV, Super Street Fighter IV added a host of new and returning characters, including T. Hawk, Dee Jay, Juri, Cody, Guy, and Adon. SSFIV also featured new ultra combos for every character, enhanced online play, and balancing tweaks.
@Chromeballz - "Since the arcade runs on Windows we'll be getting the hacked arcade version soon enough anyway" That's a very interesting point... I would have no problem what so ever with downloading a hacked version considering the thousands of dollars I pumped into street fighter arcades back in the 90's. On the other hand I would prefer to pay $50-80~ for a boxed retail version SSF4 on PC I can stick on the shelf or $30-50~ for a Steam/Xfire/D2D download. I 'pirate' all my games, but as it says in 99% of the NFO files that come with a download. "SUPPORT THE COMPANIES THAT PRODUCE QUALITY SOFTWARE! IF YOU ENJOYED THIS PRODUCT, BUY IT!" If I don't like a game I've downloaded, I delete it, if I play it more than what I would get out of a demo release I buy it. Years ago I got fed up buying games that wouldn't run well on my system, then stores decided that they weren't going to refund software - I can't take my PC to a store, install a game to test it. IMO the blanket statements that piracy harms profit are not entirely true, Something that harms profit is companies releasing poor quality, incomplete software then not providing exchanges, refunds, patches to unsatisfied customers. *Cough* Valve, EA, Ubisoft, *Cough* - There are exceptions to the rule, SSF4 being a good example, I know that it's going to run well on my specs because I haven't seen a Capcom title that doesn't run brilliantly, So in all likelyhood SSF4 would be a title I would purchase without question.
Just read the bit about Capcom not wanting to use Steam because it would "preclude too many people from buying the game." Well, not releasing the game on PC precludes 100% of us PC gamers from buying it so how's that work??
Why don't they just release it on Steam or something?? Epic fail Capcom. I was all set to buy this game. :(

Like I said, I already knew about the PSP pirating, so you weren't telling me anything new about that. Still doesn't make the pirating of PC games any less. It still happens oversees more then America, which is a fact. Unlike some people in here, I don't shy away from information and I'll admit when I'm wrong. So thanks for the info.
@Office_Ninja You could say exactly the same about most PC consumers as well. A lot of people are worried about getting viruses / malware on their computers in the same way that people are afraid to break their consoles.
The underlying factor is that piracy on the PC is easy because it's an open platform; people just download and play. Consoles have a bit more luck because most consumers aren't willing to risk breaking their console in order to run unsigned code.
@tarikm92f wtf.. no one trying to fkin convince you!! since beginning I knw you dumb & again you first who's annoy me with your stupid comment.... don't act like smartass if you didn't know anything, sucker..
The amount of stupidity in here is astounding... Capcom exec 1: "LOL NOOBZ!!! PC IS TEH WURST 4 PIRATES GAMES!!!" Capcom exec 2: "But sir, console games can be and are pirated just as mu-" Capcom exec 1: "STFU NOOB LOL!!! CONSOLES R TEH BEST FOR GAMES!!! PC FAIL LOLOLOL!!! LOOKIT HOW BRUISED MY NIIPPLES ARE FROM CONSOLE FANS SUCKING ON THEM!!!" Capcom exec 3: "Yes, sir, we've all seen your nipples now... please... just... just stop..." tarikm92f: "Mmmf.. mmfff.. mmfmf.... i love nipples" Blackace: "GTFO It's my turn!!!" Surely this must be what the minutes of Capcom's meeting looked like when they decided that it wasn't worth releasing Super Street Fighter 4 on the PC...
@killdamn The PS3's graphic card is a 7800GS. The only difference is there is nothing in the background in the PS3 using the GPU or CPU except the game, that is the only reason a PS3 looks better than the same old ass 7800GS card in a PC. However, the PS3 is now 4 years old and so is its stale hardware. GPU's, CPU's, and RAM have had 4 years to contimually improve, while the PS3 sat there. Even low end GPU's today like the 9800GT, paired with cheap dual or quad core CPU's and a couple gigs of ram ( the PS3 has a whole 512mb of shared ram, wow ) can blow PS3 out of the water graphically.
@shankygreat The performance and quality? As if PC games work any better these days with so little effort made to porting games and optimizing them for PC. Try playing with a 7800GS and compare to the PS3, the difference will be quite clear. You just end up paying money for overpriced PC parts (GPUs), just to fiddle around with the graphic settings.
I will always like PC more just because of the availability of mods. Newer console titles like Halo Reach offer some customization, but still not as much as a PC game can do. Console gaming is easier to setup though, so there will always be the casual and children gamers who want the console.
My friend took a look at my PC screen and said how the heck is your xbox 360 so much better than his ps3!!?? I nodded and asked him to take a better look. He cant find any xbox 360. His reply, "dude I never knew that PC can give out such extreme graphics!" As for the part why he got confused, I play with xbox 360 controller and when I do that the UI changes like its in 360, such as a,x,y etc as in 360. So UI looks like xbox 360 with much better graphics.
Consoles are better for kids and guys who just wanna plug in and get started. But performance and quality is way better on PC. There cant be a comparison on that. And people who think pc gaming is dying either dont know wat's happening around world or are just stupid enough to ignore it. Intel and AMD are investing billions to develop gamer oriented processors and motherboards. Nvidia and AMD are investing hugely in devoloping video cards available now that ps3 and xbox360 combined cant even dream of.(cmon!!!! 7800GS against nvidia 4XXX and ATI5XXX??) :D :D
Well now that the ps3 has been hacked there isn't a single gaming platform left that is pirate proof. Its just a bit more known that the pc has a lot of people downloading games because its been around the longest. That is unfortunate because the PC has the potential to offer the best gaming experience hands down.
@Ladiesman17 ok dude you're starting to annoy me so i'm going to tell my opinion: consoles are better for gaming than PC. PERIOD. you can say whaterver you want i don't care. i have my opinion and i know i'm right. you can't convince me otherwise. have a nice day!
@Blackace You can feel stupid now: $42 billion worth of PSP, DS games pirated http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-20006954-17.html The Most Pirated Nintendo DS Games Are? http://www.kotaku.com.au/2010/06/the-most-pirated-nintendo-ds-games-are/ That cartridge you think makes it impossible? Sorry, you can buy modchips that fit in the cartridge slot ( they actually are cartridges themselves ) and you just put the roms on a microSD card which inserts into the mod cartridge. There are also mod cartridges for the GBA slot on the DS to play GBA roms or for use as a rumble feature, as well as memory for running the DS browser. Nintendo even tried suing to take them off the market, didn't work. You can buy them easily online or even off the local craigslist. Again, you don't know what you're talking about. I trust you'll walk away now, before you embarrass yourself even more. But just in case you sill want to play ignorant, simply type DS roms in google. Edit: Oh, by the way, that 42 billion in pirated PSP and DS games which was reported in June 2010? A lot more than the 9.78 million of pirated PC games reported in February of 2010. http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/19/esa-estimates-over-9-78-million-pirated-game-downloads-in-dece/ So hate to tell you and Capcom, but console games ( at least on handheld consoles ) are pirated WAY more than PC games.
A factory that makes refrigerators, each refrigerator is made from zero to finish. A fat company of software make the product once and multiply it. They JUST change the serie. Output solution of the crisis are lower prices.
Nobody can force me to buy a game if I do not want. It's so hard to understand? If someone plays a pirate game, does not mean that in other conditions should be bought. Maybe he does not want to buy it. The pirates do not mind activation, or Steam, or DRM. Buyers are upset that give money and are tied slave to a master server, pay good money on something that does not belong. Sell cheap, sell more. That does not understand the big hungry greedy. If you want to sell DVDs, then sell it with books and guides. Show them you deserve to buy the original. Do not do that the consumer will be tormented with protection, .. and pirate play without problems.
mrboone01 @Blackace You don't know of any DS games being pirated? How about all of them? And you think because it's on a cartridge you can't make a rom? Then how do NES, SNES,N64,Genesis, and every other console cartridge out there become available to be pirated as well? Learn what you're talking about before you speak. ********************************************************************* I know what I'm talking about. STFU!! I haven't seen any news about DS games being pirated. Give me some links. I know PSP games have been pirated. I see news about that all the time. The old SNES, Genesis, NES games were all pirated years after those systems went under. Nothing is pirated more then PC games though.
@blackace yes 3 milion people think Halo not boring... :) BUT 1 trillion & billion people around the world think Halo is boring, am I wrong?? including me, my bro even never cared about Halo, lol... lol... why people so greed these days.. you think PC market is low?? then could you answer how low that $ work around the world?? Blizzard put 100 million $ for their games (StarCraft II).. They know their community is important. since they could sold 12 million copy for WOW.. + $15 each months.. that's not small income/outcome dude.. :D How do you get that B.S. information, Bungie already make EXCLUSIVE contract with Activision Blizzard?? for 10 fkin years?? am I wrong?? again :D yeah right now they supporting 360 & PS3 (for money "remember that") but when they going down like Sega or Atari. they'll find another one... lol.. :) PS3 & 360 could support Hulu or something, Facebook or Twitter, for 15$ every month?? what for?? when you can get free from internet like YouTube?? only dumb consumers will do that... there are a lot hungry people out there... and again most people buy consoles for playing games, not playing dvds.. :) because of lack interface they totally sucks on that system.. :)
@Blackace You don't know of any DS games being pirated? How about all of them? And you think because it's on a cartridge you can't make a rom? Then how do NES, SNES,N64,Genesis, and every other console cartridge out there become available to be pirated as well? Learn what you're talking about before you speak.
Other than the PS3 I haven't seen anything that people haven't pirated around my place. Then why is the PC suffering only? @blackace DS games have been pirated ever since I knew it existed lol. The pirated games on DS can even compete with ppl with legal games on wifi! I dont see online working on most pirated PC games.
@Ladiesman17 3+ million people think Halo is boring? lol!! Yes, there are a LOT of other companies out there making PC games, the problem is, hardly anyone is buying them. I listed Sony, Blizzard & NCSoft because they have the biggest following with their MMORPG's. NCSoft has like 6 MMORPG with millions of people playing them worldwide. Blizzard has WoW and Sony has SW, EQ and soon DC Universe. You can also include EA (The Sims), Acvitision (MW, CoD) and Vavle (Steam). What other companies is selling millions of PC games on a regular basis though? There are only a few BIG name companies. Bungie is still going to make games for the XBox 360. They will be making games for all platforms. Microsoft will still have a few Bungie members assisting them with making Halo games. There are tons of companies supporting the PS3, XBox 360 and Wii. It's not just Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo? The companies I listed above who support PC, also support consoles (except for NCSoft), plus companies like Namco, SqaureEnix, Bioware, Infinity Ward, Atari, Bethesda, Konami, Capcom, Gearbox, Koei, Atlus, Sega, Crytek, Temco and many, many others. So no, it's not just 2 or 3 companies. No one is stuck with one box. I think you are forgetting that consoles not only play games (hardcore/casual), but also DVD's, music, Blu-Ray, pictures and even surf the Net on some of them. All 3 consoles have always had casual gamers on them. Is it wrong for Sony & Microsoft to want to attract more of these players?
@blackace Halo kinda boring though :P. lol. don't forget about Atari, 1C, Focus, Valve, StarDock Impulse, Crytek, ID, Maxis, Bioware, Gearbox, NVidia, AMD/ATI, Intel, Microsoft lol, etc. besides Activision Blizzard & EA. there's a lot company out there still supporting PC :) but when it comes to consoles only 2 company supporting them, Sony & Microsoft with their big budget $. just like Sega & Atari. when they broke. they died completely :? no one deny Halo sold million copy since Microsoft push Halo franchise harder for their consoles, the problem is after Bungie leaving Microsoft, it's still big question though, how about future Halo will be!! lol. MineCraft, Bejeweled, that's "PC" everything centered around that technology, Movies, Music, Hardcore games, Casual games. everything.... :D why would we still stuck with one box, just for playing games, and another box for playing DVDs. and another box playing music, even Microsoft try harder with Kinect Milos, Viva Pinata, and crap gameroom titles just to attract casual gamers. lol ;)
@Ladiesman17 @tarikm92f just admit you lose your argument... lol.. if not because exclusive titles. Consoles like SONY already died.. that's their ONLY power.. (One & Only) lol ****************************************************************** Consoles already dead? Right, over 3 million Halo Reach: sold in one week on Xbox 360 is proof the console is dead right? lmao!! I don't even think Starcraft 2 (biggest PC game in the history of PC games) sold that many copies worldwide in its first week. There are way more PC's in people's homes then XBox 360's. The only thing saving PC gaming is MMORPG and all those free online games like Mafia Wars, MineCraft, Famville, Bejeweled 2 and TribalWars. PC gamers should be thanking Blizzard, NCSoft and Sony for keeping gaming alive on PC.
@mrboone01 Hey Capcom, people pirate Xbox 360, Wii, PSP, DS, and, now, the PS3 also. Guess you might as well shut your doors, because you ain't gonna sell any game on any system that won't be pirated. ****************************************************************** I don't know of many DS game being pirated since it's on a cartridge. Hard to pirate a rom. People have pirated PS1 games to play on the PSP. Most of those games are no longer being sold though, so who cares. The % of 360/PS3 games being pirated is minor compared to PC games. It's like 2-3% on consoles, compared to 25-30% on PC. That's a big difference. In Korea it's more then 50%. That would make any developer want to quit making PC games and move to a more profitable platform.
SFIV was and is the best fighting game available out there for PC. It was going to be most pirated of course. But this cant justify the reason to not release SSFIV on PC. Well its their choice. (Although looks like gimmick to sell thier remaining SSF4 console copies :D) And PS3 and xbox360 are great consoles though but only a under developed mind can compare them to a PC. I have started my professional life now & moved to new city and I can buy both consoles as well as a HDTV for them BUT would still buy a PC for my gaming needs. PC's graphics are just too good and they offer great games in FPS,RPG's,strategy genres that consoles can never match. Plug in a xbox 360 wireless controller if needed and you'll get wat consoles offer. Only diff then lies in only exclusives launched for each 3 of these platforms.
Who doesn't have a PS3 or 360 already that owns a PC? It just doesn't make sense why diehard PC fans refuse to buy either one. They're both only $300, it's not that much of a sacrifice. There is not that much difference these days between gaming PCs and consoles, and that's something you can't really deny either.
Well what's the problem with Steam? All you do is activate it through Steam when you buy it and do the initial install. Not like you'd HAVE to be online the whole time you play... I think when they mentioned Steam he thought of digital distribution only. But when I bought my physical copy of The Orange Box I just attached my copy of that game to my Steam account and I can play it all I want, disc or no disc, net or no net.
1 sold copy less != 1 pirated copy This is a poor excuse. I say BS! They made it sound as if even the legimate buyers of SF4 were pirates aswell. Yes Capcom go ahead and throw us all in one big pot of fantasized BS. Capcom and you are in the PCGA? What a bunch of hypocritical sad looking faces. Your the ones milking people and slaping them in the face for it.
@nyranasaurus well I'm sorry. It's not me who's starting all of this B.S.. but dumb foOl called tarikmtfkr.. :)
no point really discussing this. PC's are a million times more advanced than consoles. Why are we discussing this? Console = Dx9, PC's are now at DX11. Enough said really. They have finally released the XBOX 360 version of FIFA now to to pc and th eracing games on PC are about a million miles more advanced than console racing games with the exception of F1 2010 which is exactly the same as Xbox 360. So to cut a long pathetic discussion story short, If the console game is any good , it WILL be on PC eventually looking a lot better , however there are many amazing pc games that console gamers will never ever see and if you do see them they are so basic and watered down in comparison. Can we stop this stupid discussion now. Crysis 1 is by FAR WAY ahead of anything on consoles in graphics, period. Its not even up for debate. It wouldnt surprise me if they tone the graphics right back fo rthe consol version. FARCRY 2 using the same engine was MILES off in graphics compared to Crysis made by the same company. Crysis being PC only and Farcry 2 made for cross platforms. Now lets stop this dumb discussion.
@tarikm92f games that get rating 9.0 Civ5. 9.5 StarCraft. 8.5 Just Cause. Bad Company II 9.0. IT'S NOT CRAP. they worth to be apreciated. yes Crysis comes to consoles. but Metal Gear Solid Rising & Dead Rising II also comes to PC. then why you mention about MGS4 exclusive before. it's also old games.. don't be ignorant. :D lol
@Ladiesman17 i only feel bad for crysis and the rest of the games you listed are crap. crysis 2 is coming to consoles and you should admit that your losing this debate
PC's controls are better, their sound is better, their graphics are better, their menus are better, their community is better... yeah right! I play both PC and Xbox but there's some games a controller just feels right for. Some PC games do have better graphics but suffer the loss of other features. Honestly PC and Console gaming is similiar, except PC gamers can get really ignorant
@tarikm92f just admit you lose your argument... lol.. :) if not because exclusive titles. Consoles like SONY already died.. that's their ONLY power.. (One & Only) lol
@tarikm92f you say PS3 graphic are great with HD. BUT hey... PC already support ULTRA-HD. thanks to consoles oriented publisher. most games on market still stuck with HD quality.. :D remember Heavy Rain, it's laggy and have some frame-rate issues on PS3. PS3 already at their limit. MGS4 online laggy. feel free with short single-player. also for your qustion about PS3 processor. it's DEAD-END technology, even Sony admit it's failure. lol. why you couldn't admit. there's some other thing... all round genre: FPS, Strategy, Point & Click Adventure, MMOs, played better on PC, just plug 360 controller you could add Racing genre, Platformer, Fighting or Action Adventure. but consoles genre LIMP :D MMOs & Strategy didn' work on consoles, FPS even worse the control sluggish & not accurate (suit for kiddie) since most PC titles 10$ cheaper (It's even cheaper on Steam) I could easily expand my collection. yeah you could play Uncharted 2, MGS4, Halo Reach on your consoles, but I got enhanced multi-platform & exclusive titles, lol :D cheaper than Consoles. there's a lot titles that keep me busy, great titles such as: Metro 2033, Just Cause II, STALKER, StarCraft, Civ5, Total War series, Mafia II, Bad Company II. wOAH.... :) I bet you didn't have money to buy all of that titles. because Sony already suck your pocket.
@tarikm92f PC has different if not "high-standard". :) when developer put PC version exactly same. like consoles version (without graphic setting) I bet reviewer will degrade their PC score. or didn't suit mouse & keyboard they will degrade more (even though PC support 360 controller) or frame-rate issues!! between consoles & PC. actually PC didn't suffer more if you have high-end system. every multi-platform genre have different or "RANDOM" quality between 360, PC, & PS3. Bayonetta worse on PS3 than 360. Just Cause 2 & Metro 2033 looks better on PC than 360. some Ubisoft game looks better on consoles. some EA & Activision games played better on PC. it's RANDOM. I couldn't play SSF4 on my PC since they didn't release it. but same goes to you. first Crysis, STALKER, StarCraft 2, Civ5, upcoming Star Wars Old Republic. they also not released on consoles. isn't :D
Oh hey, i remember DC337, the representative of Capcom. I know it's probably too late to whine about SSF4, but all i can say is that this crap shouldn't be on Dead Rising 2, because it doesn't stop piracy. It only gives the PC gaming communities incentive to launch digital denial of service attacks.
Wow lots of excuses for piracy here. Anyone who wants to play fighting games already has a console. Most of the excuses here are probably from lame pirates that are angry over another company leaving the pc because of the piracy problem. Yes the consoles have piracy but nowhere near as bad as the pc. For single player games on pc most of the people who play them do not pay for them. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2008/11/acrying-shame-world-of-goo-piracy-rate-near-90.ars But keep the excuses coming, I'm sure companies like Capcom really care.
@wexorian there are some games that have better score on PC but mostly multiplatform games have better score on consoles. that's a fact and you can't deny it.
@tarikm92f i see your posts are not popular, Assasin creed 2 got 8.0 on pc because PC games have other demands, PC games got other engine, Better graphics, (How much you will post that Ps3 or xbox 360 got good graphics PC graphics are better and faster) and if you are comparing gmaes wich are "exclusive" on platforms Then let's compare. 1. There is no blizzard games on platform, all games are awesome and got million users. ANy good MMO on Platform? ooh yeah i dont see it one :D 2. Dragon age origins got 9.5 on pc and on platforms less, Mass effect also got less than pc, and ooh yes i cannot se ME1 or me2 on PS3 and pc version is better than Xbox, 3. Fps games i will not compare Because all FPS are better than platforms hallo and some max 2 Fps are better than pc ones.
1) PC gamers that wanted to BUY SF4 , did buy it for ONLINE... 2) COD4 mw2 ALSO was the highest pirated game in history but for ONLINE alone is also the best selling PC game ever ( FPS ). 3) SSF4 had the potential for even more sales on PC platform since more and more PC gamers actually took serious online fights ( even now there are many thousands online on SF4..) shame... 4) Since SF4 sales were good , officially , wheres the #@$@#$ problem here? 5) PC gaming community started getting into SF4 and getting serious ( ESL leagues anyone?) and all you did ( CAPCOM ) ruined the opportunity to appeal and lure even more gamers into your vagon... thru amateur and pro PC leagues . Period Conclusion :: You really need a "PC gaming manager". Really... Imho. Im out
i'm not cheer Piracy but lol 1. it was number 1 in piracy coz there are no other cool fighting games on PC 2. helloo X box 360 and ps3 verions are Pirated also 3. On platform by pyracy it was not on 1st place because There are other figthing games that's it. 4. Special anty piracy system, lol U mean DRM, that sucks , i better get PS 3 than to F... with DRM.
