Mario's Nintendo 64 single-player adventure modded to allow playable second character.
Super Mario 64 released in 1996 as a single-player-only adventure. And while the game will officially remain a one-player affair, modder Skelux has provided a glimpse at what the iconic game could have looked like with two-player support.
A video of the Super Mario 64 hack in action is available below, which shows Mario venturing through Princess Peach's castle and its paintings alongside another Mario character. The mod is available only through a PC emulator version of Super Mario 64.
This is the first time multiplayer has been added to the original Super Mario 64, but it is not a first for the series. November 2004's Super Mario 64 DS included a four-player competitive multiplayer component, as well as a suite of minigames.

If they're going to talk about this they need to talk about the Streets of Rage Remake. Best mod/homebrew for a beat-em-up in the world!
1 Like It's amazing to see what a talented, loving person can do to squeeze even more mileage out of a classic game. It makes me wish that more studios would turn their abandonware over to the open source community and see what magic might result from it.

1 Like Thousands of games have been emulated, hacked and modded to greater extents than this game has. Unless all of them have been covered as news here, this article doesn't belong on gamespot at all.

Cool idea, hopefully this isn't final version tho, it'd be nice to give the 2nd mario Luigi colors and possibly make it split screen to make splitting up an option without the huge zoom out. Sharing health should stay tho, sorta helps balance having 2 players in it.

so if both go to completely different sides of the level we will have an amazing bird view of the entire level? Also, if one dies, both die? they share the same count of coins and health? Would be great if both marios start to slow down and then hit an invisible wall if they walk too far away from each other or something, just to make things easier with camera control. Also both share the same camera controls? so many IF BUT AND HOW'S

2 Like @Romangelo I think Joseph was being genuine. I would agree that it's refreshing to see an article about video games themselves, rather than the developers/publishers/Michael Pachter milieu.
Looks like both players have to stay together in the same screen no matter what, arcade-style. Which kind of defeats the point of co-op exploration. Oh well. Still the best game ever made.
10 Like Why are people treating this as if this were an official release and it is a bad thing? The original game is still here and no matter what mods come out, the original game will never change. So complaining about "co-op ruining the single player experience" is pointless, especially since this is optional. Personally, I am glad this happened. It was interesting to see what SM64 would look like with some form of co-op.
So, butchering every new Single Player game to add trendy cut and paste Multiplayer to it wasn't enough, now they are going to go back to old ones and ruin those too? "face palm"
1 Like @DarthLod Oh no, one of the best platformers now has a multiplayer mod on the pc and I can't like it anymore. More games need single player only, who honestly likes playing with friends when you can be lonely instead. "face palm"

I'm sure Nintendo will be seeing Skelux in court. lol!! Modding is fine for Pc games because it's an open system and PC developers don't care. It's a big difference when it's done with console games that are to be played ONLY on the game console it was designed for.

@unreal_master Did you watch the gaming marathon they held for charity a few days back? Many of the games they played were roms being run on their PC. They was even a part where Danny couldn't seem to beat the first boss in Super Metroid and you can see him exiting out into the ZSNES meu to create a save state.
2 Like @unreal_master What's wrong if it needs a ROM to be played? This is just like super mario crossover, a fan-made production adding much-wanted functionality in a classic. Reporting the strength of the gaming community is the purpose of any news site and if you're going to pull the "this is illegal" argument, the N64 is unavailable legally on the market today, anyone who actually owns the original game or one of its ports would pretty much be in a gray area as they have bought the game where it is available and are playing this mod on an out of date legally unavailable version of the same game.

What's wrong is that, unless GS has changed their policies, you can't even mention wanting to get a hacked PSP, emulator, or anything else of that nature without being sent a warning.
You also used to be flagged for foul language, maybe they have changed some of their policies.....
@FallenOneX Thanks for pointing this out, I really do think emulation should be viewed as more mainstream being one of the only ways of playing many old gems and actually having mods for them. Maybe now GS will be more relaxed about emulation overall.
@chronocommander Yeah, that's what I was referring to. Been flagged before after making a comment on a PSP Go article..... And your comment has to be fair, just look at the article you commented on.
@FallenOneX @unreal_master Wait, you're talking about the user's terms of use right? It does look like they've relaxed that in this case then. I've written a more detailed argument for use of the N64 ROM in a comment further down the page. If that holds it does not qualify as illegal use and all comments about emulation in that context are fair use on GS even with section 7.

@chronocommander @unreal_master I've heard this excuse used over the years many times now, that owning the original cartridge makes playing the rom legal. But I have never been able to find hardcore proof of this...anywhere.
Not getting into a debate about emulation or anything, but I've honestly never found any proof of that claim. I think I even tried looking into it once, with Nintendo as a matter of fact, but everything I read there seemed to contradict what emulation sites have always said.
