Capcom's heralded fighting franchise hits multiplatinum shipment following last week's US, Euro launch.
One week before Street Fighter IV's console debut in Japan on February 12, Capcom was projecting lofty sales goals for the game's global performance. As part of its third-quarter earnings report, Capcom said that it expects to sell 1.7 million units of the game through its fiscal year end, or March 31. One week removed from Street Fighter IV's US and European release, and the publisher appears to be well on its way to meeting--or exceeding--those expectations.
Today, Capcom announced that it has shipped 2 million copies of Street Fighter IV to retailers across the globe. While the figure signifies strong demand for the title, Capcom did not reveal how many of those units had actually been sold. Since the original Street Fighter launched in 1987, the franchise has sold more than 500,000 arcade cabinets and 27 million console games, according to Capcom.
Street Fighter IV marks the first all-new installment in the series since 1998's Street Fighter III. (Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix was released as a downloadable game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 last November.) The 2D fighter features all 12 of the classic World Warriors that fronted the heralded Street Fighter II series. Also entering the ring are seven fighters that have appeared in other Street Fighter games, such as Fei Long and Akuma, as well as six all-new characters.
A PC edition of the game is expected to launch later this year. For more information, check out GameSpot's full review of Street Fighter IV.
I thought this game wasn't special until I actually played it, It was like the PS3 when I bought it... Hated it until I played it. To be honest, I didn't like some of the faces of the characters, and Ryu's Shinkuu Hadouken is disappointing... compared to Tatsunoko vs Capcom. But this game, is still awesome!!!! I can feel it, this game will be sold out everywhere, this can actually be better than Soul Calibur 4 and Tekken 6!
GameBeaten "Resident Evil 5 is not Gears of War." are you serious? RE5 is a third person action and gears of war2 is also a third person action game therefore having the ability to run and shoot is very crucial in these type of game. RE5 is not unique because the first few re games were survival horror games not action game. by shifting it to action they just want it to be like every other third person game with crappy controls.
Street Fighter V needs this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcZVlOPcbjU&feature=channel_page
Well worth the wait, I've been hooked to it since i recieved it on the 19th of Feb (a day before the UK's offiial release). The online gameplay is as smooth as Super Street Fighter HD Remix online. Thank you Capcom.
Oh my god... I know it is like the best fighting game ever, but 2 million?! And it's only been out since the 20th febuary, jesus, I aint even had a chance to review it yet!
The Best fighting game I've played in Years! This game brought me back to the fighting genre again! Respect to Capcom!
When I first heard about this game a year or so ago, I was kind of reluctant on whether or not I would get it, depending on how the game was presented. When I first saw the screen shots of the game play, I was still reluctant, because while it looked amazing, the game play seemed like it didn't really evolve from Street Fighter II. However, after finally playing it, I have got to say, I am AMAZED. The game play actually has evolved, and has an extraordinary amount of depth. Somehow it manages to mesh the game play and feel of Street Fighter II, the alpha series, Marvel vs. Capcom, and Street Fighter III all into something that is both familiar and different enough to warrant an exciting new gaming experience. Factor in it's stunning graphics and quality sound effects, I am once again a hardcore Street Fighter fan. Metsu...HADOUKEN!!!
Street Fighter IV has done well to stay to it's roots as a 2D fighter; just like how Resident Evil 5 has done by not being able to move while aiming and shooting. This is how these games stay unique. People like TreFacTor on the other hand just want games to be like everything else that gets updated, aka, all the same. So, Street Fighter IV and Mortal Kombat are not Soul Calibur or any other 3D fighter and, just because I felt like mentioning it, Resident Evil 5 is not Gears of War.
TreFacTor: not sure how old you are - personally I don't care but anyway... "The thrill is gone", because u grew out of the game. Believe it or not that IS gaming. You grow out of stuff. EVERYONE on this site - i GUARANTEE u - has either grown out of Need For Speed, Tomb Raider, Halo etc -- all because the right risks aren't taken. Sometime's it's a good thing... Street Fighter IV is revolutionary in how it CONTROLS. How it looks is unique. If it turned 3d, it would become Tekken. If anyone wanted Tekken, they'd wait for it to release. Same with Sonic - if they didn't add any 2d-emphasis to Sonic Unleashed it would have been seen as the end of Sonic. And in terms of telling the "gaming community" to "open their eyes" - you're being quite brave in insulting the gaming community in such a childish manner. If you don't like the game, don't buy nor play the game. Pretty damn simple.
street fighter IV sucks, how long are gamers gonna fall for this 2d fighting engine with 3d graphics? I was a fan of the original from the arcades (even had the snes versions), I used to spend hours playing against my friends but now the thrill is long gone. They need to reinvent the game, the sad part is that it could be the best fighting game of all time if it would move into the next generation truly! No destructible environments, still stuck in a 2d plain.... a few new characters with some tweaked moves, and stupid people are lining up for this crap. I guess the movie will be number 1 in america by weeks end also. Open your eyes gaming community, Mortal Kombat and Street fighter haven't changed other than graphics. Stop being fooled.
I hope the success of SF4 causes a resurgence of fighting games, just like when SF2 dropped back in '91.
AS HELL! Actually, dave, I'd have to agree, but giving us an HD remix of MvC2 would be a pretty sweet way to tide us over until the day they finally drop the mother of all fighters in MvC3: Character Oblivion.
HD Remix of Marvel vs Capcom 2? no SSF2HDR wasnt all that great so just making MVC 2 HD would be a waste they need MVC 3, with next-gen graphics, that would be sweet as hell. AS HELL!
@zeke2040 not only are you wrong, but your comment is system wars, and has nothing to do with the thread. anyway can anyone tell me if street fighter series has sold more than tekken? because namco said tekken is the highest selling fighter of all time.
this is the only best fighter game out their... everyone should have a copy of the ps3 verion , its way better than the 360.. cause my friends has a 360 verion of it, and i saw nothin but pixel on it... but my ps3 was smooth and clear looking...
It's nice to see Street Fighter IV bringing back some attention to the oft-ignored and "orphaned" fighting genre. If SFIV sells well which it will I think developers of other fighting franchises will be encouraged to innovate a little in terms of gameplay as well.
Seeing that the fighter genre isn't dead yet, and that there's a lot still that could be done with it, I hope Capcom takes this as a sign to give us more, i.e. vs Capcom, Rival Schools, Street Fighter V. It would be boss to have at least an HD Remix of Marvel vs Capcom 2. Get on that, you lazy bums...
I'm looking forward to getting this soon, haven't got around to it yet though! I've only ever really played remakes of Street Fighter 2 back when I was a kid and I loved them, I thought it would bring back great memories playing with my older brother.
I like Capcom for one thing, they screw things sometimes but they also release the greatest games from time to time. Thumbs up for Capcom.
Capcom=Pwning Seriously, I don't think they have much to worry about in these dark days of economics.
I'll probably rent it and kick everyones behind for 3 days and bring it back to the video store and move on. I got to many things going on for me to invest time in another fighting game. Hell...I've been on a second playthrough MGS4 since 4 months.
capcom will take over the gaming industry once again, first it has begun with sf4, then RE5, then dark void, then lost planet 2. im proud of capcom, + 1000. capcom ftw.
I remember back in the day we had a local store with a street fighter arcade game in there. Man I wasted so much money, and I also remember capcom vs marvel that game alone made me love street fighter. But after countless BS spinoffs I am glad too see that this game is doing good. I hope they make another capcom vs game, maybe a combination of all of them, with all the characters.
I'm not really interested in the SF series anymore. Now if Capcom could bring back the Rival Schools series, I'm all in!!!
although i prefer guilty gear, darkstalkers, and capcom vs anybody; I kinda agree the SF is has always been one of the better fighters that appeals to the most people
This game is has only three things wrong with it 1) Akuma is really cheap 2) not as Cheap as Seth though 3) The commentator on the character select screen is irritating. Seriously good game though hope sf4 turbo addresses the problems above lol
Oh, I thought it had sold 2 million. Just ordered mine yesterday. Would have liked to get the special edition but im on a tight budget because I wanna get Killzone 2 (if it gets high reviews), the next Tenchu on the Wii and Resi 5 next month :-S
lol I had to make my previous comment. I was in a devious mood. But it's not a bad game. I actually think it's the best fighter to come out in the past year and a half. MK VS DC was a letdown compared to the previous game in the series. SCIV was sort of a let down. It was okay but did not feel right in many aspects. But SFIV seems to have gotten the formula down pat much like they did with SF2T. My only gripe with the game is the boss and the cheesy anime cutscenes. Beyond that it's a fantastic game and the first to truly get the fighting formula down right this generation. Capcom did it again...as always.
I can't believe people like this game, it's alright I guess but it does not deserve to sell 2 million copies. There are many more great titles that didn't sell that many. Doesn't help that most great games get the shaft and poor sales because the noob/casual/online gamer only buys shooters. But this is one fighting game that does not deserve this. I normally wouldn't hate on a game this much but they took a lot out and basically remade street fighter 2 and they are gonna be rewarded for it by selling 2 million copies. This is almost as bad as Legend of Zelda TP and Madden selling so many copies. I think people should just rent the game.
Great game, I cant even believe how much I play it. I expected to play it casually since it was my only fighter. I've offcially stopped playing GTA 4 DLC and Dead Space. I find myself saying one more match several times on SF4.
