Star Wars: The Force Unleashed again in '10

LucasArts prepping follow-up to popular action game; trailer shows return of original game's onetime Sith protagonist, possibly as a Jedi.

When word first surfaced that a new Star Wars game would be unveiled at tonight's 2009 VGA ceremony, the prime suspect was a sequel to The Force Unleashed. After all, LucasArts' decently reviewed 2008 action game was a massive hit, having sold more than 5.7 million copies as of February 2009.

Sure enough, the game in question was The Force Unleashed II, due out in 2010. Though details are thin--no platforms revealed--it is clear the game picks up after the events of the 2008 original, which cast players as the secret apprentice to the Sith Lord Darth Vader, Galen "Starkiller" Marek. [WARNING: Spoilers ahead.]

The canon ending of the game, listed on the official Star Wars site, has Marek turning sides and sacrificing himself to save the Rebel Alliance leadership.

However, it now appears that Marek is very much alive, as he appears front and center in the sequel's trailer, which is viewable on YouTube. The former Sith now appears to be a Jedi, as he wields their distinctive blue lightsabers to slay a towering, Rancor-eating monster. The trailer features voice-overs from both Darth Vader and Yoda talking to Marek, perhaps indicating that he will be torn between the Light and Dark sides of the Force.

The official Force Unleashed II Web site www.unleashed2010.com was teased at the end of the trailer. GameSpot will have more details on the game as they become available. For more on the original, check out the video review below.

So long as they fix the minor flaws that the first one had, and the story is just as epic as TFU, then I think they're onto a winner here (And a good excuse as to how Galen isn't dead, and how come neither Vader nor the Emperor or any kind of medical equipment didn't detect that he was still alive).

it was unsure if starkiller was actually dead on part one because his body didnt disappear and he might have just been playing dead so surely he is alive and surely this will be another very great game because part 1 was very fun, like really fun! lol

I played the first one and i loved it Star Killer's power of the force is unmatched. I like the Lightside of the force but there's just something about the Darkside of the force that i find so seductive its the unlimited power. I can't wait for sequel, long live the Sith.

So EPIC! i loved the first game and the book was really good too. kind of obsessed with Star Wars so this looks perfect for me. I love how Starkiller is battling with his dark and light sides and has the power to be Master jedi or sith. and this new rancor killer creature looks bad***.i do hope they add some kind of online play.

@drybones: You're right, I forgot about that. I also remember a certain little green Jedi master standing his ground as well; but in both cases, it ended in a stalemate--with Yoda getting blasted off of the senate platform, if you'll remember, and Windu having to use his lightsaber to deflect the Emperor's lightning back at him, not his bare hands. I guess what I really meant was that I don't know of anyone else who could not only stand there and take the Emperor's lightning, but actually advance to the point of being able to grab him. Anyway, thanks for the support; it's great to know I'm not alone in my theory. Two things are certain: Starkiller's just a straight-up bada** IMHO; and if the new game is half as cool as the trailer, I'm definitely gonna have to add it to my collection.

I enjoyed the first Force Unleashed and have completed the game on all levels but the last. There were a few minor flaws but still was an exciting game and look forward to the release of its sequel. i will definitely be getting this one.

The first game while flawed was still fun. If they can fix the issues with the last game and make a good story to boot then I'm all for a part 2.

If you guys remember the scene where Marek was thrown out into the void of space and survived that, it's likely he survived the lightning clash since the Emperor survived.

I agree with nomadd1200. I also just hope they don't have annoying little bugs... (not literally)

@nomadd1200 Don't forget Mace Windu went against the Emperor and could of survived...almost defeated him... if it wasn't for Vader of course.

@unbentonslaught, Neoplayer2, and Rsoub: Just a thought, but did you guys consider the possiblity that Starkiller was not dead at the end of TFU? We all know that strong Force energy residue can mask the presence of even extremely powerful Force users--Yoda chose Dagobah for just that reason. Given the fact that no one else has ever gone toe-to-toe with Palpatine, the resulting explosion could have easily scrambled both his and Vader's brains to the point neither of them could focus enough to read that Starkiller was still alive. Imperial brass doesn't handle corpses, either; they have droids for that. By the time Vader/Palpatine recovered from the blast, Starkiller could have easily stolen a ship or stowed away on one and made his escape. Everyone else just took it on faith that Starkiller was dead because no one had ever stood their ground against the Emperor and lived. Of course this is all just a theory--but it makes sense to me. Sorry for the rant, I just couldn't think of a way to shorten it.

    Posted Feb 10, 2010 5:22 am GMT

I agree with Rsoub, it says hes gonna be a jedi....so how are they gonna do that? You can't bring someone back to life in star wars!!! Well...ya sorta can but...

  • Neoplayer2

    Posted Feb 5, 2010 5:27 pm GMT

@Rsoub: That's only in ONE of the endings...there's two to be seen! Try killing the Emperor instead of Vader at the end...
Or is it the other way around? Maybe Vader instead of the Emperor.

i really want to see an online multyplayer, where a person can create their own jedi or sith and have lightsaber battles. Kinda like a fighting game, but just for the online battles. Either online u can start from a bigginer with very little experince and ablilties and earning as u fight. Or, u can intergrate ur earned abilities from a campaign game to online and then make custom character.

If this comes out to the PC... I just ask for a more than a decent port job, and if possible, don´t let Aspyr do it! It was a company known for it's lousy port jobs and still it was the company chosen to port the SWTFU. I hope this one comes out with a bang to the real fans of Star Wars!

@COTT3R: The issue with what you want is that if you want a longer story, you are going to forfeit online play. This really isn't the type to have online components anyway. That would be more geared towards Battlefront. Or if you are like me, you are looking forward to The Old Republic (due out in Spring of '11....supposedly.)

    1,online duel

    3.longer story or more DLC's

they should make it more of an adventure game, in my opinion. i mean, yeah, it's cool to go to your ship and instantly power up your force powers, but i'm thinking of picking worlds on your own, meeting yoda or someone to upgrade your force powers, heck, even using your ship in space, though that would require more time to put into. it would be sweet, buying and placing components for your ship, looking for different lightsaber parts. maybe im just wishing they would do that for this game, but it would be cool though. i think they are rushing this a little bit too fast. i'm hoping that they decide to actually make the wii version better, i'm probably having false hope, but i hope they can make it better.

honestly it doesn't seem like it will be that much of an improvement considering the short time for development, if it's already due to be out in 2010 well that's within a year, and the original just came out at the end of 08, thats not much time to develop a spectacular game.

  • XdavidCAzen23x

    Posted Jan 4, 2010 5:41 pm GMT

I hope they improve the quality of the gameplay a lot more, and make it an open world/galaxy/sandbox whatever u know. needs way better lightsaber mechanics, because that part of the game was not very dynamic. removing limbs and slicing bodies/droids would help, they wouldn't even need blood because there is no blood when ppl are impaled or cut up by a lightsaber.

Yay!!! I loved the original, even though I had the Wii version and was disappointed you couldn't slow down the Star Destroyer yourself. And that was the most epic scene of the game, too! Why did they make the Wii version so different from the others...? Oh well. I wonder if this will take place between Episodes III and IV too... Probably not, seeing how*spoiler* the end with Starkiller supposedly dying made it look like this would start IV...*end spoiler* Well, we don't know much right now.

    3-both of the above

Finally they're making another game with Starkiller and this time with dual lightsabers! Hope its a Sandbox game, so you can go to different planets when ever you want. And some new powers, and please extend the levels, I loved the first, but the levels were way to short like 30 min max for each big level.

I liked the gameplay of Force Unleashed, but the menu and leveling system were slow and clunky. At times, the game was just too arcade than what I would expect from a current-gen major release. Take come cues from Mass Effect and really give the sequel some POLISH!! It's killing me that I'd rather play a game that is similar to the Star Wars universe than an actual LucasArts game! This is STAR WARS!! C'mon, impress me!!
