I really hope they don't blow it. I played the original from the day I bought it a month or so after I got my Atari 800xls and played it and its not quite as good succesor until I finally got my ST 5 years later! A couple of things worry me. It looks a little low in the detail department but that could be the video encoding. 3rd person view, hopefully there is a cockpit option Episodic... The only people that have really done that well is TellTale but thats due to their game engine and the fact all the episodes are already done before the first launches. I don't want another HL2 (Where's Episode 3 valve!) or worse SIN epsiodes! We never will get a SIN episode 2 as they its now owned by an educational gaming company!
Episodic remake of Atari 2600 space combat sim arriving on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC early next year; first trailer inside.
One of the more ambitious games of the Atari 2600 era was Atari's own Star Raiders, a space combat sim that combined a strategic galaxy map with first-person shooting action. Today, the publisher announced it is working on a remake of the classic for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC to be released early next year. The reboot was first hinted at by retailer listings in mid-July.
Besides having upgraded graphics, the new Star Raiders will have an all-new, episodic storyline, which may--or may not--involve the Battlestar Galactica-ish Zylons of the original. In terms of gameplay, it will retain many elements from the original, including galactic tactical maps and space warps, but will add new elements such as customizable spaceships and "radical battle transformations."
Star Raiders will also add online play to the mix, allowing players to play through its campaign in co-op mode. The game will also have more standard multiplayer modes, including competitive team multiplayer.
Star Raiders is in development at Carlsbad, California-based Incinerator Studios, the formerly internal THQ shop behind the Cars games and the PlayStation 2 and Wii versions of MX vs. ATV Untamed. In the late 80's, a techie friend hooked up the game's computer version to the 1st big screen tv. Unbelievable to play the game on a 56 inch screen with maxed stereo sound.
Hmmm. Let's see Dark Star One or Star Raiders. I'll wait to see the review before choosing between the two.
Oh for pity's... There is NO WAY they are going to do Star Raiders again. It would be like saying "tic tak toe - the reboot!" What they are going to do is make their own space game, slap some of the names from the original game into this game, and try to get some extra sales out of it.
Hopefully this will get LucasArts off their butts and remake TIE Fighter / X-Wing series or finally make some new versions of the series. I preferred the Atari 800 version of Star Raiders to the 2600, but both were great games for their respective system back in the early '80s. 3rd person view, aarrggh!, I want 1st person cockpit view. I hope they don't screw this new version of Star Raiders up. Man we need some good space combat sim games!
I played the dickens out of the original on the 2600, and I'm gonna play the dickens out of the remake. One thing, they were called Krylons, not Zylons.
I had the Atari 800 version as well. Also played the 2600 version too. It was a good game for it's time. Not sure what they can do to bring it to this new generation. The game was pretty repetitive. Fly from one quadrant to the next and eliminate the enemies. Kind of reminded me of the old text/text graphic Star Trek game from the late 70's early 80's.
Man, are developers really that scared of making new IP's? Digging up an old IP like this...I know the cost of new IP's are high, but really, marketing and good game design have way more to do with a game's success than uber high development costs and connections to an older IP (I said "older"; recent sequels tend to have momentum on their side).
Loved the original Star Raiders & the genre definitely could use some new games I'm hopeful for this
Preferred the Atari 800 version of the game, but gotta give the little 2600 credit for trying (and, for the most part, succeeding). This will be worth a look next year ...
