The future of the long-running Final Fantasy series will be revealed by Square Enix during a pre-E3 event; senior vice-president Shinji Hashimoto will be present.

Developer and publisher Square Enix has announced that it will reveal the future of the Final Fantasy series on June 11, Destructoid has reported.

In an invitation sent to media, the company announced plans for a Final Fantasy event to be hosted on the morning of June 11, simply labelled with "The Future of Final Fantasy".

Following the presentation, senior vice-president and Final Fantasy brand director Shinji Hashimoto will be present for a Q&A session with media.

Earlier this year, Hashimoto announced a new Final Fantasy game in development for the PlayStation 4. He did not share any details about the game, but told fans to "please be excited for E3 this year".

The company also showcased its Luminous Studio engine on a technology demo titled "Agni's Philosophy".

Speaking about the demo, Hashimoto said it resembles what the developer is hoping to create in the next generation of games.

FF7 remake exclusive to PS4, finally make it happen SE. You've remade every FF except the PSOne era it's about time they stop skipping it.

Return to turn based cuz every ff that hasnt been has sucked.

@Rayzakk Ehm almost all FF games are turn based only exceptions are the PSP titles Dissidia and Type-0. Actually only Type-0 as in Dissidia you can unlock turn based combat in an action fighting game that plays like DBZ Tenkaichi.

@maitkarro Lets see FF13 played itself.  I won't get into that terrible gambit system.  I want a true turn based where I control all of my characters and maybe use a little strategy but the ADHD crowd gets bored easily.

The future of Final Fantasy is FFvsXIII, a game that was announced 7 years ago!

How about in the future, you release one of the 10 Final Fantasy games you have in development.

See what I did there? :P

I sincerely desire they don't screw FF XV because, if this happens, FF franchise might never get back on its feet! If they keep stuck with Fabula Cristalis saga, then I'm sorry SQEX, you had it coming...

@Imperiacommando @Rennik_Repotsir  it's people like you who babble on about pretty visuals which have killed FF. Who cares what it looks like, ff games need good story and a vibrant world, graphics are secondary, if that.

I can't help but get excited. Unlike any other franchise, FF can wipe the slate clean with each new entry. New world, new characters, new story, new gameplay, etc. Sure FFXV might be crap, but it might also be the best yet.

So Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 will be like the Majora's Mask of the series? It looks interesting, and we'll just have to see how it comes out.

GunEye

So wait, there's going to be a new "Final Fantasy" title for the PS4/next gen?

While Lightning Returns is the final installment of current gen FFXIII?

Like this if you are as excited as I am!

toddx77

I am kind of scared.  With how FFXIII pandered to the stupid COD crowded I fear for the worst with the future of FF, but considering SE is fixing FFXIV and ARR looks pretty good I have some hope for the series.

Business plan, remake Final Fantasy 7 using the Luminous Engine, and watch profits quadruple every day :) also release Final Fantasy Versus 13 (or whatever it's gonna be called instead, maybe 15 idk) and Kingdom Hearts 3. In fact all 3 those games should be done using the Luminous Engine but that probably would mean further delays for the latter 2 so idk.

@Tangsta03 why?

i want more female leads in games.

If the new FF has another whiny, emo, floppy haired male. Then i'll be the one punching kittens.

Tangsta03
Tangsta03 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@shingui5 Ugh, not all males are whiny, emo and have floppy hair, that wasn't what i was asking for.

FF have traditionally used male leads, I don't see why that needs to change. If you want female leads so much, then ask Square to create a separate RPG franchise for them.

@shingui5 @Tangsta03 hahaha poor abused woman getting left out of games. A tear.

cheto88

@shingui5 @bunchanumbers @Tangsta03 I agree that Vann was completely dispensable, he was just introduced to have a younger protagonist since they first intended for Basch to be the main character (that would have been awesome), and to explain things more easily to the player since he was stranger to the political situation. Tidus on the other hand is central to X's plot.

shingui5

@Tangsta03 "men relate more to male characters, women relate more to female characters. It's common sense, "

yet, i don't think that is true. I believe men can relate to women as much as they want to relate to women, and vice versa. The idea of gender getting in the way of people connecting to a character on an emotional level, i believe is a falsehood, a falsehood that is helping to keep women protags out of games unjustly.

Tangsta03
Tangsta03

@bunchanumbers @Tangsta03 @Kristan1711 Blame that on the Japanese RPG weirdos, they prefer their males to look effeminate. Beats me as to why.

They're still 'manly', however, how they actually look is irrelevant. Sure there are the emo leads, but they're only meant to represent all the teen angst the core crowd (teenagers) goes through in real life, so the characters can be more relatable and the story more meaningful.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@Tangsta03 @bunchanumbers @Kristan1711 it just shows that the males aren't exactly male in a jrpg. well mainly FF games. Even in 6 if you seen character art work. Cyan was running around in tights and of course there was kefka artwork too.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@Kristan1711 @Tangsta03 thats true. tidus, vaan, even cloud was pretty effeminate. Look at the Wall market scene. He was in drag and even beat tifa and aeris in a beauty contest.

Tangsta03
Tangsta03 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Kristan1711 @Tangsta03 A result of poor writing. If they wanted a 'manly' character, why can't they just make them male?

Different isn't always better.

@Tangsta03 But aren't the women of Final Fantasy manlier than the men anyway?

Tangsta03
Tangsta03

@shingui5 I don't know why people need it to be spelt out to them: men relate more to male characters, women relate more to female characters. It's common sense, why do I need to elaborate on that?

On that note, the FF crowd is still predominantly male so it only makes sense we keep the lead male. Political correctness aside, that is the simple truth.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@shingui5 they absolutely need a real good story this time. All the flash and pizzazz won't do a single thing for their sales. look at xiii. I would buy FF XV if it was built on a snes engine and had a fantastic story.

shingui5
shingui5

@Tangsta03 @shingui5 well, you are the one who started out saying you'd rather punch kittens than see a female protag. If you can admit you can relate to them (i don't see why you can't, them being human, and having human emotions as much as men), then why take this stance?

Admittedly my first comment was rather brash, but i have no problems with female or male protags. Devs should put someone into that position if it fits the narrative, and the story they are trying to tell.

Kristan1711
Kristan1711

@Tangsta03 @shingui5 I don't mind whether they're male or female. Just reduce the amount of characters in the story. Have one playable one too. I want to establish a bond and relate to one character really well, not 6 of them poorly.

Tangsta03
Tangsta03

@shingui5 @Tangsta03 sure we can relate to females, but we can relate more to our own sex

and if males can relate to females, then females can relate to males, so what argument are you using?

Tangsta03
Tangsta03 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@shingui5 @bunchanumbers @Tangsta03 Vann was as relevant to the plot as Ashe was, the game didn't focus on any particular character. Tidus was definitely got more story and gameplay time than Yuna, no idea what you're harping on about there, I'm sure no one bought the game for Yuna alone.

shingui5
shingui5 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Tangsta03 @shingui5 thats not really about Lightning being female, more about her being a bad character (everyone was badly written in that game to be fair).

All protags should be likeable or relatable, regardless of gender (males can relate to females, so please don't use that argument :{ )

Tangsta03
Tangsta03

@shingui5 @Tangsta03 Terra was ok, I didn't mind her, but I never felt the story revolved around her so she isn't typically a proper FF lead.

Plus Terra was actually likeable as a character. If they really must use a female lead, at least make her likeable. Lightning was nothing but an anal b*tch that can barely manage a smile the entire game. She had no charm and barely any redeeming qualities.

shingui5
shingui5

@bunchanumbers @Tangsta03 @shingui5 you could expand it a bit.

I'd argue FFXII and FFX both had females leads. (Asch/Yuna) Though they had female leads in a de facto sense. Both games were under the delusion that Vann/Tidus were actually relevant to the plot, which they weren't. More so in Vann's situation.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@Tangsta03 @shingui5 lets see... x-2, xiii, xiii-2, xiii-3, 6 (tera)... 5 of the ff series has female leads. That's not a bad ratio at all

shingui5
shingui5

@Tangsta03 @shingui5 FF6 had Terra as a lead, and that game is regarded as one of the best. The precedent is there, so why shouldn't more females be the leads?
