Square Enix TMs Dragon Quest Wars
Publisher files name application with United States Patent and Trademark Office for potential new game in long-running franchise.
Square Enix already has a number of Dragon Quest games populating its in-development portfolio. In December, the Japanese publisher-developer revealed that the Nintendo DS-exclusive Dragon Quest IX would be followed by Dragon Quest X on the Wii. The Dragon Quest franchise has also been the subject of a number of remakes for Nintendo's handheld, with DQIV and DQV debuting to critical acclaim in late 2008 and early 2009, respectively, and a redux of DQVI also expected.
Now, Square Enix appears to be prepping yet one more Dragon Quest game. Yesterday, the publisher filed a trademark application for "Dragon Quest Wars" with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The listing carries a bevy of descriptors typically attached to games, including "computer game software, video game software, sound recordings in the form of optical discs, magnetic discs and semiconductor ROMs featuring music and fictional stories," among others.
No other information on the game was provided, and Square Enix had not responded to requests for comment as of press time. The company certainly has had a lot on its plate as of late, having just closed on an acquisition of Eidos Interactive, the British publisher behind Tomb Raider: Underworld and the forthcoming Deus Ex 3.
