Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2's platinum debut helps lift publisher to 11 percent revenue growth, $21 million profit during April-June period.
The second quarter saw its share of fiscal headaches for many big-time publishers, with the likes of Capcom, Nintendo, and Activision all seeing revenues sink. However, a growing segment of publishers did make out well during the April-June period, including Electronic Arts, Microsoft, and, new to that list, Square Enix.
Reporting on its three-month earnings today, Square Enix said revenues for the period came in at ¥32.54 billion ($382 million), an 11 percent year-over-year rise. The publisher also reversed its ¥1.672 billion ($19.6 million) loss from last year to post a ¥1.812 billion ($21.3 million) profit during the period. Of those sales, Square Enix's video game segment posted ¥16.63 billion ($195 million) in sales and an operating profit of ¥5.891 billion ($69.1 million).
In terms of new titles, Square Enix saw the biggest output from Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, which the publisher released for the DS to Japanese audiences in April. Through the end of the June quarter, the handheld monster-battling title sold 1.25 million units. Square Enix said other top performers during the period included Final Fantasy XIII and Just Cause 2, though the publisher did not provide updated sales figures for either.
Square Enix's arcade machine business also turned in a solid quarter. For the three months ended in June, Square Enix- and Taito-branded coin-ops brought in ¥10.98 billion ($129 million), with operating profit hitting ¥683 million ($8 million).
Looking ahead to its in-progress quarter, Square Enix has a crowded release slate. Later this month, the publisher will put out Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, both of which come from 2009 acquisition Eidos. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Front Mission Evolved, and Final Fantasy XIV will follow in September.
@juden41 Its been said before, The team behind Kingdom Harts is working on Final Fantasy Versus 13 so as soon as that comes out the sooner you can get KH3
SE PLEASE oh PLEASE just make Final Fantasy the way you used to, is it that hard?? If anyone out there has seen Get Him To The Greek, You'd probably agree that every single person @ SE is getting MIND F**KED, cause they obviously don't realize that every FF after 9 SUCKED, and that all those numbers for FFXIII were regret buys
@ adonis021509 AGREED! Kingdom Hearts is soo awesome! Good for Square Enix! they are soo sick! This with Ubisoft...are the best!
I believe that SQ-E just wants make KH prequels/spin-offs because of laziness i.e. Final Fantasy XIII
FF 13 was just a button masher. All you had to do was hammer "auto battle". Oh look, I've won again. Great. I've picked up FF tactics and FF 7 on the PSN store and as soon as you start playing you realise just how poor the newer installations of FF are.
versus 13, agito 13, hitman 5, will boot a lot... looking foward to ff 14 :-? but really i'm tired of hearing final fantasy around this year, pls done those FFs and make a new franchise
@im-a-roustabout Yeah you are right. They just teased us with that trailer! Still angry about it. Maybe, just maybe they will make those games again in seven to nine years. (fingers crossed for anytime sooner) Because it took 20 years to remake the first FF. FF8 came out in 1999. At least i hope so, if not SE really hates the fans that made them this big.
I want my Hitman 5 Square Enix! You hear me? Why did you bought Eidos if you're not gonna create their games! (well expect for Lara Croft, Deus Ex, Kane & Lynch and Thi4f...) Though Im happy Batman: Arkham city is being developed at Warner Bros. You never know what Japanese might do to good ol' Batman. Just saying!
based on this post how many of you guys hate SE, looking through this post it seems you guys don't like them to much.
Great news for the company. Now go use that money to soup up all the FFs in the making so they won't be as linear as FFXIII.
I feel that the only special part about FF is their character designs ... No one can deny the awesomeness of nomura's art work . Other than that , I think now , Bioware has surpassed SE in terms of RPG standard . What DragonAge needs now is a better artist and story and they will surpass FF anytime , with their much deeper interface and immersiveness.
A lot of people keep talking about "moving the genre forward" - to what? Just make great games! There are more ways to make great games fresh than constantly breaking the formula - like new story, new characters, new spells, weapons, etc. You don't have to re-write the formula of the entire game to make it entertaining. Take the Elder Scrolls series for example - nobody can argue that the progression of games in the series does not show a progress - but the basic mechanics in the series was not compeletely destroyed and rebuilt. They understood that the gamers who liked the last game they played expected some familiarity in the new game. They produced ground breaking and succesful hits, time after time, without fodusing on "moving the genre forward". That's the sort of thing I wish for in SE - but they just don't get it; and because of their ignorance, the FF series gets worse and worse with each release. I think when people say they want a "remake" they really mean they want a new game based on the tenents of the last game they played (or a favorite) not a rehash of the same exact game with prettier graphics. For example, FFVII - nobody wants to play the exact same game - but if there were a prequel, a sequel or a side-story that would be fantastic. People liked the Materia system - at least I did, and there is a lot of wasted potential by not utilizing it again, or some hybrid of it. There are a lot of ways to introduce entertaining entries without breaking the series.
ff14? manthey starting to be like Madden...Coolyfett does not own any of these games...its one of the major firms Coolyfett does not own a game from.
Just Cause 2 numbers should be great, as it is a great game. I can see them hiding FF XIII numbers, though. What they should have done is go ahead and release Dragon Quest X, like they were supposed to instead of canceling it - even if they would have released it on the PS2 (which people are still playing, btw) they would have had more profit. FF XIII was by far the worst FF I have ever played, although parts of it showed promise (like the free roaming part) the whole product together was abysmal. They need to get the old team back - and I mean the OLD OLD team, meaning the FFVII and below team. Something really wrong is happening to that company, especially when you have to rely on DS sales to save you.
I hope SE realize that those numbers for FFXIII were regret and mistake buys, than just simply numbers of people buying it for the companies benefit. I just hope Versus isn't as bad or not bad at all. Yes SE is being innovative and new, which shows they want to expand, but change isn't always good.
creator Final Fantasy has left Square -Enix in 2005. Just check up Last Story for Wii - it is the last RPG from FF creator.
I personally love how everyone thinks Square is just involved with rpgs and final fantasy. They have fingers in alot of different pies like Kane and Lynch 2 dog days for example. If they keep being involved in good games then hell, well done on your profit margins. ;)
Final Fantasy games aren't good as they used to be. You can't compare story quality from older FF titles with latest ones. They are kinda obsessed with graphics and forget what a rpg is all about. FF VII still my favourite.
@BigBigR The genre has been evolving, just look at Resonance of Fate. Unlike many JRPGs that want to take a watered down approach and make their game palatable to the mainstream it played host to a very deep and complex combat system that rivals that of PC RPGs. Granted, this helped kill its sales, but unlike FF13, it attempted to move the genre forward by making things more complex and challenging. You cannot move the genre forward by going backward into simplicity and mediocrity. We've been seeing that backwards slide for the better part of a decade now.
@Sirbobislost It will be very unlike FFXIII from what I understand. From the research I have been doing on Versus, the game will be more traditional in alot of aspects then what FFXIII is. One example of this, is that the game will have a World Map, and at one point you will get an airship in the game to fly around.
@ 1995_1996_1997 Let's face it for versus to be better then 13 it has to be as unlike it as possible the combat system sucked and it was more linear then the original super mario game even that had secret areas
@gamebreakerz I'll stop hating them when they start making good Final Fantasy games again,I think they can give the series a reboot with versus,I have great faith in nomura and the kingdom hearts team.
@BigBigR When I say 2D and 3D games I mean games like on the SNES and todays games. It has nothing to do with stereotopic 3D (the one on the 3DS).
@acasero44 So you are saying they should only talk about games like LIMBO, Bayonetta and Starcraft 2? All of which I'm sure are your favourites and rate highly, being such an adult and all.
Games on the wii or DS should not be on a console or game related website. They should have their own "toy" tab. haven played with a toy since 1997
@KnightsBlazing I know not everybody wants a remake of it. But there is a reason why they chose to use FF7 for there concept of technology as well. They knew alot of people love that game. For instance, look at the movie they made..Advent Children, set in FF7 universe. And FF7 came out for ps1 but years and years later when ps2 came out and psp 3 differ FF7 spin offs came out. Clearly it's extremely popular and was the game that opened up the franchise to a much broader audience.
Im glad they're starting to see the light because with such a busy schedule they'll need every penny they can get for FF XIV.
@Fantasy_Dragon yea at least before they were actually putting effort in their games. now they are just making me waste my money on games that had potentials but doesn't deliver at the end
Just wait til Deus Ex: Human Revolution releases......Hopefully every fanboy and fangirl for the franchise will buy it, I have it on reserve.....
@taxonomic I understand you enjoy old school RPGs (so do I) but there is no need to be so harsh on new approaches. I like DQ as a series, but we can't have the gameplay be stuck in time for the entire genre. I LOVE 2D gaming, but accept its flaws, such as limitations in gameplay that 3D games don't have. The genre needs to evolve.
