Spelunky hitting PC this summer

Derek Yu's downloadable platformer coming to PC later this year through Steam and GOG.

The updated version of Derek Yu's platformer Spelunky will launch this summer on PC, independent developer Mossmouth announced today.

The game will be available first on Steam and GOG, followed "shortly" by a release on the Humble Store. A price was not mentioned.

The game is currently available on Xbox Live for $15.

Spelunky for PC will launch this summer alongside versions for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, which were announced in March.

Spelunky first hit the PC in 2009. That version is now referred to as Spelunky Classic and will remain free to download through the developer's website.

For more on Spelunky, check out GameSpot's review.

Very nice too see all these high and low-profile titles coming to PC, used to be when there was a new console generation to be released that the "PC is dead as a gaming platform etc, etc" but now it seems to be more alive and vibrant than what is has been in a long time :)

Look at all these games being brought to PC in the wake of the next-gen announcements.

Consolians, there is still time. Join us and you shall be forever showered with amazing summer and winter Steam sales. Defy our power and mercy and you shall be forever logging into the internet at least once a day and paying extra for used games on top of the £60 initial price of new ones.

70% of PS3 gamers also play on PC's so U must invite Xbox & Wii gamers to join PC community.

@kamikazeespleen Yup, for many it may seem a hassle to build a PC. But honestly it isnt that bad, and once you have a machine built its a nice feeling.  People have the mindset that you need to constantly upgrade it but the fact is a decent PC will last you a good 5 years before needing upgrade. We get better game prices, dont have to pay a stupid fee to play games online....and many games are moddable. Be nice to see games improve at PCs pace, instead of being stuck in the past at consoles pace.

@Kooken58 @kamikazeespleen My pc is nearly 7-years. Yet still i can play all the games of this gen nice and smoothly and it really feels great. It also stuns me sometime that "Man how much will my old pc need so it can finally say time for an upgrade". I am still waiting for that time to come.

kamikazeespleen

@LalchandTudu @Kooken58 @kamikazeespleen Exactly. My PC is 5 years old with only a new graphics card last year and it still plays games fine. I want to build a new one this year but it still plays all the latest games on high settings mostly. One of my friends went from console to PC and has never looked back. It might be more expensive initially than a console but the games are FAR cheaper. BioShock Infinite + XCOM+ BioShock 1 = £24. That was the best pre-order deal I have ever seen.

Could have been called Rick Dangerous #3. :-). Its look is closer to that series than the old classic Spelunker.

Awesome.

Can't wait to go from 360 to PC. The wait has been far too long.

Awesome. I've been wanting to play ever since I saw GF "walkthrough" of it.

The world gets a little bit better every time someone new plays Spelunky.

The article should be updated because it's also coming to PS3.

Not too surprising (with games like La Mulana that came to PC after being released on XBLA) but glad the updated version is coming to the PC!

Well by the sounds of the changes (from the commentators.. not the article), I'll keep a lookout for the updated version.  I'm not a big fan of the free version but I haven't really played it much either, I feel like I should give it another chance, so I'll wait for this.

one of the best games of this generation besides Dark Souls

I thought that Friday the 13th was tough for the NES, but I broke 3 controllers playing Spelunky. This is a really great game, but is also the toughest game that I have ever play in my life. I still haven't reach hell, the only place that I haven't been yet.

Tip - best way to get far is to rob the black market, set up a rope at the entrance to a shop, lob some sticky bombs at the entrance, climb up and wait for the shop keeper to run out. they'll then find themselves at the bottom of the level shooting each other to bits or jumping into spikes, then you can just go round then collecting the spoils.

need to know how to get into hell just ask. :)

@cousinmerl It seems that the last reply didn't post. I'll write it again. I have try several deferent ways to get to hell but I haven't been able to do it. Do you have any subjections with how to get to hell the easiest way?

A true masterpiece is coming to PC, Vita and PS4. Also, this is not just some visual upgrade. There is a whole new mystery and semi-narrative as well as a full new chapter (In addition to the original 4).

@Fallout_red Coming to PC? Isn't this game, like, for free already?

Fallout_red
Fallout_red

@komuchen @Fallout_red This a different beast. To some, the changes are not enough but to me, the 5th chapter gives the whole thing a full sense of purpose. Also, the variety and level / platform variations are vastly increased.

I mean, I love the PC one but the HD upgrade is something else. Of course that may have to do with my love of new, semi-roguelike games like Binding of Isaac and such but to me, Spelunky HD is the best.

Apart from graphics whats the difference between Spelunky Classic and the updated version?

hochstreck
hochstreck

@dribblesbarbax Beside the points other commentators have already mentioned, the overall balance of the game was tweaked, as far as I know.

Fallout_red
Fallout_red

@dribblesbarbax Actually, they've changed a lot. The old PC one has 4 chapters, each consisting of 4 levels. In the HD / new version, there is a specific objective / super secret in each that must be done in the proper order to unlock a full, 5th chapter: The Hell.

The journey to hell and the fight against Yama gives a true sense of purpose to everything. Also, this version is so damn addictive!

cousinmerl

@Fallout_red @dribblesbarbax nailed it! got to hell and back again. and rode the great camel!

cousinmerl

@dribblesbarbax think the 360 version featured some secret levels and co-op / death match modes, maybe they got the online multi-player version working? would be ace to get through maps with more then one player on one system.

THIS IS THE BEST XBOX 360 game EVER! it just keeps getting better every time i play it.
And on a personal note, i didn't think much of it at the start, but it seriously grows on you.

Guess the new PC is going to feature the new update graphics. wonder if it features new worlds? - if your a PC owner buy this if you don't already have the xbox version
