[UPDATE] Wal-Mart.com site posts product page for sequel to 256-player military shooter; listed as releasing on January 25, 2011; Sony dismisses listing as "speculation."
In January, Sony Computer Entertainment released MAG, an ambitious online military shooter that will feature 256 players in a single game. The gaming giant had high hopes for the title, but when the NPD Group released the top US games of the month, the title ranked only 13th out of 20--hardly a runaway hit.
Nevertheless, Sony appears to have been pleased enough with MAG's performance to commission a sequel, if a product listing on Wal-Mart.com is to be believed. The megaretailer is listing the game as arriving on January 25, 2011--almost exactly one year after the first game went on sale.
Other than denoting that the game will be for the PlayStation 3 and costs $59.82 under Wal-Mart's lowest-pricing system, the page has no other information. [UPDATE] However, Sony shot down the listing with the following statement: "Walmart posted incorrect info, we have made no announcements nor have we provided them with information on this. Anything they posted would be based on speculation."
Developed by former SOCOM specialty studio Zipper Interactive, MAG boasts the aforementioned massive-scale multiplayer battles. Each player assumes a different rank on each side, viewing the battlefield according to his or her station. Commanders see the action from a top-down view from which they can direct lower-level soldiers, who see from a first-person POV on the front lines.

MAG 2 = 512 players?....jajaja....anyway MAG is awesome!!!! I still could play it for many years....AWESOME!!
My money is on this being the updated release date for SOCOM4, not MAG2. Zipper recently pushed back S4's release window to "fine tune" it. Releasing a new game before the one you're currently finishing seems ludicrous at best.
What if they just make a cross platform a ps3 guy vs a xbox 360 guy fight. Ill understand if they ditch the pc becus ehaving a mouse targeting is too imba. Its just too damp when Medal of Honour and Black ops will be coming soon.
People need to think, if they were going to release MAG 2 next year, they wouldn't have a beta for new content that they want to release for the original game. Also they wouldn't have another DLC pack coming out. MAG 2 will probably be a 2012 or 2013 release.
Once MAG 2 comes out I hope it comes with some kind of training or a story mode to get you used to the weapons at your disposal. I tried playing it but I guess had a hard time getting to know the functions of the controller...
Meh... Sony needs to bring Planetside to the PS3. 256 players is small potatoes compared to thousands of players going at it at once. You think it'd be an obvious choice, given SOE makes it...
@ Megavideogamer Don't forget about Super Street Fighter IV. the reason they released it as a new game rather than DLC was that they needed to revamp too much stuff. Or so they say.
Yea, I am sure its an additional faction and map pack DLC. THERE is no point in coming out with a new game!!!
M.A.G 2 already only a year after the first M.A.G. This has to be an add on pack with New factions to play/new maps. The is no real storyline in M.A.G so this has to be another map pack
I'd like to join in on Mag in a way but I don't want to waste $60.00 on a game I might not like. The trailers and reviews all look great but I'm not much of a multiplayer person on consoles. The last time I spent more than a couple online matches in a game was Quake III Arena 4 years ago. I guess I spent some time with Halo 3 but I really haven't stuck with any online game in 4 years....
MAG is good fun but I haven't played it a lot since BFBC2. With all the changes though I might start to play it more.
let us switch armies so we dont have to wait for 20 minutes to join a game great game, cept once bf2 and mw2 came out, no one stayed on,brainwashed to play crappy games
When BFBC2 came out, I never touched MAG again. Pretty disappointed with it overall, and when simultaneously extremely impressed with BFBC2, let's just say my hopes aren't high for MAG 2.
I'm 100% MAG fanboy playing it everyday, but for those who want to know more - rent a game for a day. You'll probably get raped by experienced players (or noobs with all the skills and guns unlocked:)), but all who have played MAG either: 1) play the game every day now or 2) throw it in the garbage after the first day's experience.
In next patch (probably that's MAG 2:)) there will be totally different skill tree. Also the sound effects are awesome in new beta and there is totally different animations and gameplay experience (which Zipper is stil improving while listening what the players are suggesting). The game is getting improved all the time since the release.
It probably will be MAG along with all the patches. There is new MAG beta on PSN (requires MAG disc), and this "MAG 2" will be launched from the very same MAG disc you can find in stores now. If someone do not know - MAG is the best FPS on PS3 now. It's very hard for noobs and learning curve is soo long (took me 75-100 hours to understand what a moron I was before:)). Still MAG is the most addictive FPS on PS3.
I'm pretty sure Wal-Mart is lying or it's talking about a different game. If you listen to Zipper's Zcap witch is their podcast one of the episodes, the developer/producer said, "MAG with all the updates is pretty much like MAG 2 or MAG 2.0." This is a false statement what Wal-Mart has said, Zipper is still in the process of improving MAG. You people who say MAG was hyped your wrong it wasn't as hyped as MW2 or Halo did you even see a MAG commercial come on or even news and videos of it oftenly. MAG is a good game but every game has it flaws.
@NightAngel Agree with all your points completely. You put it the only way could explain to people: "I wanted to like it, but just couldn't". Some advice to Zipper: Cut the player count down by half (32,64, and 128players) if that's what you need to do to give me graphics and animations that don't completely embarass the PS3. 128 players is PLENTY. Felt like I was playing Crysis on a 10 year old laptop. Laggy and not smooth at all. And this was with the same internet connection that routinely has me ending up as host on all the FPS online multiplayer games. Also boring and no variety in weapons or maps. Kept hearing and reading "be patient, it gets better". Never did. Traded 7 days later in disgust. At least the trade paid for half of Uncharted 2, which was great!!
Please note that this is coming from an exclusively PS3 gamer... MAG is, at best, an average shooter with a lot of players. I believe the only reason that Sony is creating a sequel is just for the "selling point." In other words, to show that the PS3 has a game that can run 256 people at one time, to go along with the "Only Does Everything" campaign. I really hope MAG 2 is far superior than its predecessor, because I really wanted to enjoy MAG, but I just couldn't.
I've never played MAG, but just from a presentation standpoint, it is TERRIBLE. The animations are the worst I've ever seen.
Are you guys nuts? MAG has a huge fan base. Also the game is incredibly well made. Zipper has a ton of experience making good games for the PS3. They made this game one time, SOCOM, it was pretty good.
@ExtremePhobia The game is pretty fun. It really forces you to work as a unit, so if you like team-work, this game is more than fun. With a good squad, squad leader, and commander, and a headsets, this game becomes amazing. I had it, but sold it due to the fact that I had too many shooting games and wasn't dedicating enough time to all of them. However, this game comes out on my birthday, so I may have to get it.
It's true... Halo is hyped... Already paid for Reach though! Just wish I could play MAG. It sounded like the kind of game I'd been waiting for for a long time. Just not worth buying a PS3 for though.
Aren't Zipper working on a new MAG? They have already told it on their blog, we've also got a beta, with Move support. It would surely be just an update, for free.
MAG isn't hyped! The marketed 256 players and they delivered. Halo is a hyped up game. And I own 2 working XBoxes. Maybe in the Voltron days I would have liked the game.
The game did well for ps3 exclusive. 900k in the first 20 weeks. Bioshock 2 was released around the same time and sold 700k in the first 20 weeks (ps3 only). Also that is around the time ps3 sales started to spike from the release of the slim. I think the release price for an online only game should never exceed $49. But I still play this game regularly along with MW2. Unlike BFBC2 which, although a good game, is collecting dust.
ratix2 Most games offer campaign and multiplayer. Sports, FPS, Action, adventure, etc. Usually if it's just campaign it offers hours of gameplay. Single games(online or campaign) are a thing of the past. Most people want more for their money. If it's a one trick pony, people expect to pay less.
It has so much potential to be such a great game. If they actually advertised it not just the commercial with Kevin Buttler in it... And if they just made it smoother. I found it fun for the most part. But still if they do somehow make a second one they better not get rid of you health.... Because if they go with regen health I will flip... But sure make a second one be my guest but this time im going to wait for a review before i get it this time :(
@DrummaBoi2112 lol so your saying make a whole new game in other words. i dont blame you though because MAG was just hype the game was terrible. i say let everyone forget how terrible MAG is and start work on a new project. i thought MW2 was over hype garbage but MAG is even worse. good thing i own all 3 consoles so Halo reach FTW.
story mode, better graphics, MORE PLAYERs (who play the game rite) should make for a decent game atleast!
