Fortunately, I have all 3 consoles, but I believe that PS3 is WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. I bought mine used (the guy at the store sold the used PS3 as a 40 GB PS3, when I got home I noticed that he sold me a 80 GB PS3 instead xD). Anyways, this doesn't affect me, but I agree that PS3 is losing a lot of great exclusives. I wouldn't be surprised if God of War 3 had a 360 mod... I believe that this happens because the game developers like more to program the games on the 360, then make a mod for PS3, but that's my opinion...
Slumping sales of PS2, PSP, and PS3 hardware blamed for 32 percent drop in game division's revenues during last three months of 2008.
Sony released its financial report for the holiday quarter today, showing that the electronics giant's gaming division had a blue Christmas, with profits dipping very nearly into the red. The news was not entirely unexpected; last week Sony lowered its forecast for the full fiscal year and announced a major restructuring plan.
For the three months ended December 31, 2008, Sony's game division posted sales of ¥393.8 billion ($4.33 billion), down more than 32 percent from the same period of 2007. The game division's operating income also took a sizable hit, plummeting 97 percent from ¥12.9 billion ($144 million) in the home stretch of 2007 to just ¥0.4 billion ($4 million) for the 2008 holiday quarter.
Sony blamed the numbers partially on currency fluctuations. However, it also noted that hardware sales of the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and PSP had all decreased year-over-year. For the quarter, the PS3 managed 4.46 million sales (slightly off from the previous year's 4.9 million). Add that to the 16.85 million-unit milestone that Sony announced last October, and the PS3's sales life-to-date worldwide total reached 21.31 million as of December 31. By comparison, Nintendo's Wii sold nearly 45 million units and Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold 28 million units worldwide as of the end of 2008.
The last quarter of 2008 saw Sony's other two platforms slide year-over-year. The period saw 5.08 million PSP systems sold worldwide--down from 5.72 million in 2007--and 2.52 million PS2 systems sold, less than half the prior calendar Q4's 5.4 million.
The software numbers for the quarter were a little better, with the PS3 seeing a bump from 26 million games sold to 40.8 million. However, PS2 software sales were down more than 50 percent to 29.7 million units, and PSP sales were 2.8 million lower, to end the quarter with 15.5 million games sold.
As of press time, Sony's stock was trading on the New York Stock Exchange at $20.42, down more than 2 percent from Wednesday's close.
i think the xbox is doing better because its a: easier to program for b: sony lost too many of thier exclusives c: ps3 too expensive d: live walks all over the psn e: 360 controller way better (except the d pad - relevant only for 2d fighting games) and recently check out activisions officail stance on the ps3 (as of today) remember i am an unbiassed multiplatform gamer, i have a ps3, but i wont delude myself into false reasons why it is not as successful as the 360. in fact, if japan did not exist, theres about 50% of the entire ps3 base on one continent. the figures are quite stark for sony when you look outside its home territory. however i will keep my ps3 and still get the odd exclusive for it, but dont expect me to go online with it when i can use my stellar xbox live service with my 360
xerberus: i will admit to a little bit in my past. it was for psone when the ps2 came out (i was going to throw it away, but my mate gave me some burnt disks instead; but i wouldnt have bought anything further for it anyway) and for the original xbox when it was discontinued (i turned it into a fully functioning media centre that is still in use today)but these changes were AFTER the systems were obsolete (to extend lifespan) and after id purchased the systems at launch, at full price, 4 controllers each, multiple memory cards, in excess of 30 to 40 titles each per system. dont tell me the 360 is doing well due to piracy. i bought it at full price on day 1, bought 4 controllers etc again, and so far have purchased over 25 tittles, 27 downloadable games and will get natal. i own a ps3 and i have bought 3 titles, 2 bluray movies, 1 extra controller, and 15 downloadable titles. PIRACY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. (i also have a wii, 2 wiimotes, classic controller, 6 games, misc accessories, 3 downloadables and the machine gathers dust - just for the record)
Piracy vs Original Factor??? (PART 2) continued from Piracy vs Original Factor??? (PART 1) lol ... ...Of course (and obviously) I'm not saying all 360 users did that. And as I said above, I'm just stating an aspect of the whole thing: the piracy factor. I myself had squeezed my wallet dry just to buy Killzone 2 and more recently inFamous, which rocks so hard i could **** my pants. And I must admit, 360 users are quite lucky to have (otherwise illegal) access to cheaper games. And to all the console loyalists who keep fueling the never-ending console wars. It's nice to have a competitive flair when rooting for your fave, but c'mon guys! Let's all stop with the stupid "PS3 fanboys burn in hell" or "SONY PS3 sucks donkey balls" or "360 retards" or something (sorry i dunno any common insults from the ps3 people). WE ALL bought these damn consoles from those damn capitalist manufacturers, so let's all deal with it like grown-up boys, yeah? Don't look for oppurtunities like this article to say trash talk about the opposition. It's dark times like these that we should all be trying to knock our heads together for ideas on how to keep communities (in this case, the ps3 community) alive and kicking. Which they still are, but, yeah. You get the idea.
Piracy vs Original Factor??? (PART 1) I'm bringing up a relatively old issue, so I hope people will bear with me on this. It's true that there are several factors that explain why ps3 is trailing behind. I'm sure there have been some people who have been pondering on the piracy factor like me. 360 users, It's not that I'm trying to put a bad one on you guys. But, it could well be a possibility that 360's are selling more due to this extended marketing. It's just, I get the impression that in some places, especially those suffering on the economic crisis thing, buying modded consoles/games would probably be pretty tempting. A user below (naumchas?) bravely shared his opinions on this. If you think about it, ps2 games were also largely pirated back in the days, compared to the Blu-ray format that Sony uses today. It just kinda made me wonder just how big the piracy factor is. I'm sure a lot of gamers here today can (at least humbly/quietly) own up to having bought a pirated cd or two back then. Just ask yourselves how good it had felt to buy a good game for 3 bucks compared to buying the same game for the full retail price, and for what? a game manual? some online perks? It was prolly a good deal. And I think that's what helped propagate it. "Hey dude ps2 rocks, they got lots games at *insert store here* check it out." "Hey, 360 rocks! They got lots games compared 2 ps3! and they came out earlier!"... ... continued in Piracy vs Original Factor??? (PART 2) lol
Not only FF XIII but also MANY OTHERS NICE RPGS. Like 1) The Last Remnant 2) Blue Dragon 3)Lost Odyssey 4)Infinite Undiscovery and many more i can't remember some of them are bad really bad but that's not the point. the point is Sony has lost its position as a nice RPG platform. Provided with the fact that 360 controller is the very good shooting controller Microsoft beats Sony in this round. Now Microsoft is shifting its vast resources to family entertainment I don't think Sony can survive if they don't pull some miracle soon. Don't get me wrong I Iove both consoles and have them.
Two huge blows to the PS3 1) FFXIII on Xbox 360 2) MGS: Rising on Xbox 360 Just think about it. Both were shown a week ago at E3. If both were exclusive to the PS3, there would be NO QUESTION about which system has better exclusives. It is stunts like this why the PS3 is "lagging behind." If you can't lock up games that have been selling your systems for the past decade, you're NOT going to continue to do well.
Sony's making less money because they took away some of the good features that were on the PS3. Originally, PS3s had 4 USB ports, flash card readers, and PS2 compatibility. Now they took away those things and the PS3 has 2 USB ports. They wouldn't have lost so much mony if they hadn't done that. They should've continued with their old method by selling 40GB PS3s (With 2 USB ports, no flash card readers, and no PS2 compatibillity) and 80GB PS3s (with 4 USB ports, flash card readers, and PS2 compatibillity). Or even better: put out 40GB and 80GB PS3s or 80GB and 160GB with all the features I mentioned in the last pair of parentheses(Which are 4 USB ports, flash card readers, and PS2 compatibillity) and the only differences would be the amount of HDD space. That way, Sony would be doing great.
A lot of peeps seem to be saying something about losing a console war. I still have no idea how anyone could say anything about losing a console war, when the systems haven't even been out for more than 3 years, 3 for 360 and 2 for PS3 and Wii. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this so called "console war" end when the life of the system ends? 20 million sales in the hardware department is by no means a small feat, considering the price tag of the PS3. Even though Microsoft lost over a billion replacing the rrod xboxs, they're making it up with software sales and the online monthly payments. It's actually pretty ridiculous; they're essentially making 1/3 of what blizzard makes from world of warcraft at around 10 million subscribers.(Btw, I'm not saying that's the user base, I'm using a figure) $600 million a year. Now, I'll admit the 360 is doing better in the sales department, but you can't count the PS3 out yet, not at least until the year 2011 or so. I doubt any new systems will come out in 2010, if my predictions on the economy worsening are correct. But in all honesty, I definitely would not like to see Sony's days of hardware entertainment end. Competition is sort of an integral part of getting the most for your money. I can easily see Microsoft taking over the gaming industry if Sony were to end it's gaming division. I'm pretty sure a lot of the people who are putting down the PS3 are wanting this to happen. Some people are saying that all the games should be on one system. Problem is, the owner of that system can charge you whatever they think is reasonable and people will pay for it. Microsoft can easily charge $10 a month for their online subscription to Live, which at $5 isn't really a hassle, it's just that it really shouldn't cost anything just to play some games online. Point being; stop trying to justify which system is better based on sales. Every system has their great games and I still haven't heard from no one how great it is to be in this day where we can even chat like this about video games, since they have come a long way since the 2-bit era. And yes, I am looking forward to Killzone 2 and Resident Evil 5, I'll wait and see what Halo: OSDT has to offer.(in all honesty, they should either remake halo 1 or just put out a special edition of halo 1 that can play on Live).
bigbangsun to bad capcom leads have just sh1t all over gabe newells claims of the system being to hard to develop for... literally saying " im not sure why developers claim its to hard to dev on the ps3, because it really is not.." gabe is a lazy pos. dont get me wrong, I love his games. to death, but hes just an over weight, middleaged fanboy of MS. its obviously not that hard to make games on if such incredible hits keep coming out for it.
This is mainly the result of bad PR. DO NOT MAKE EVERY ONE HATE YOU! The PS 3 is too expensive, has too few of games, and came out late. You have to be either the cheapest, the first or have the most games. PS 3 went out with out any of those. It's certainly a cool machine ,but that doesn't pay the rent alone, or the original xbox would have hit it big.
@bigbangsun, developers complained when the ps2 came out that it was too difficult to develop for but as can be seen, at the end of its lifespan the difference between the games at the start are staggering. ps3 is far from a shoddy product, devs just took the easy way out without bothering to learn how to use the ps3 capabilities, once they see what can be done with the exclusive titles they will move to make that the primary development machine
Valve's lead developer warned Sony that they should scrap the machine and start over again. Much like Microsoft with Vista. Just accept it's a shoddy product to work with and reinvent the wheel ASAP. Unfortunately, the production cost and selling price for the PS3 already sealed its fate. If Sony goes any lower, even if they sell alot of systems, they're still losing alot of cash. To add insult to injury, Kaz went public (again) with his rage against Microsoft outselling his system. Sega used the same tactics with Nintendo, and look where that got them.
@ valuum. So by calling someone ignorant because of their thoughts, wouldn't that maky you ignorant as well..? hmm.
If Sony wants to enjoy success on the ps3, they need to kill ALL production related to the ps2 (hardware production, 1st and 3rd party software production...) and force gamers and software makers to move on to the ps3. Microsoft did this with the Xbox and it has paid off for them in spades. Sure, there will be the 6 months of whining and complaining like with the xbox, but people will get over it and then get down to making games and money just like with the 360.
metalofwardevil - "people should admit that ps3 games are better than 360 or wii games, im not a fanboy just telling you whats obvious" Are you serious?!? That is one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard. What people like or dislike is completely up to them. Preference is purely subjective.
tpsisicantpronounceit has hit the nail on the head. and this is coming from one of those fools who actually bought a ps3. i own one bluray movie (dead space downfall) and i bought 1 good game on the online store (wipeout) this does not justify the price tag. business is business
Look, Sony missed its window of opportunity. Thats the way business works, the right product at the right price at the right time becomes the runaway success, and that was the Wii. Theres still room for competitors and theres plenty of market to go around, but you've got to run a business like a business. Sony spent this generation over priced, over burdened, over confident and just plain overbearing. Sorry guys, but I still haven't seen anything that makes me want to go get another job just to buy the machine. Get smart with your pricing and titles or keep going throught the motions, because that's where we're at. Killzone, GT, God of War? Good stuff... call me when they look like Killzone did at E3, and actually play good to go with it.
people should admit that ps3 games are better than 360 and wii s games (im not a fanboy, just telling you whats obvious) compare halo with metal gear solid or resistance's online play and other stuff with gears, just compare so now sony should REALLY hype their games because when ps2 was out,it didn't have much of a competition like regular xbox exclusives weren't as fun but then they hyped halo and now it has a record of most sold in just 1 day and the hyped gears and that game sold pretty big too so now sony should give commercials like metal gear solid 4 was gamespots game of the year and resistance bieng the only game with a 60 players online and thats how sony would be successful with the ps3 as it was with the ps2
@ demi_veritaz The Xbox uses a directX based system that developers have been using for years and is used on the PC, the PS3 uses an OpenGL system that is far less prevalent. Its easier to make a game for the 360 and PC but to put it on the PS3 is far harder, and so more costly. Its no wonder developers go for the cost effective option then outsource the porting for the PS3, with the resulting poor versions which reflects badly on the PS3 but that?s Sony's fault at the end of the day. Some of Sony's decisions this generation are baffling, and smacks of massive arrogance on their part, expecting the PS3 360 fight to go the way of the PS2 Dreamcast one. Most people (except fanboys) were not sold on all the hype they were coming out with this time and so the 360 got the lead and got the developers. Sony wont get to decide when this 'console war' is over. Saying the PS3 will find its feet in a couple of years will mean nothing if Microsoft and Nintendo (and Apple?) have new offerings to tempt and excite people with.
360 Games look nicer because developers have had time to adjust and take advantage of the hardware. The PS3 has MUCH different capabilities and with all the cross-platform games, of course the games are going to look and run better on the 360. Sony's game systems are built to last, their previous systems are living proof of this. The PS3 has a great deal of untapped potential, and once developers get used to making games designed for its hardware, we'll start seeing some great looking, great playing games. Personally though, I'm not going to go out and buy a new system just to get a few extra frames and slightly better draw distance. Compare 360 launch titles to PS3 launch titles.
@ Ghostface..because your five friends encompass the whole gaming demographic, right? I would never drop money on another system when I already own one (360) that does its job just fine. Actually with the economic times not many people are going out and buying two gaming systems. And most people already have one. Recreation items are in a huge slump, hence slumping sales. To think Sony will catch up is ridiculous. I admire the games and systems they have created in the past, but they lost this round big time. It's ok to see you team lose every now and then. This loss will be good for them.
Killzone 2 is gonna be a good shot of sales, but I still don't think that it's going to save it. We bought ps3's because we thought that every game was going to look like Killzone. But all we get is the 360 winning in just about every graphics comparison there is. :( I am very sad. But at least I get to brag about Killzone 2 and MGS4...lol, gud choice 360 owners.
Lol Ps3 ia the new dreamcast. both came before their time. both could play playstation games. (BLEEM) both have online gaming. Ps3 will die but not until sony gives the world the longest flogging of a dead horse for the record books. which is real sad, my suggestion to sony is Get some damn exlusives and ban multi platforms from your console.
Look eventually people are gonna own a ps3 sooner or later. I probably now have 5 friends who owns a 360 getting a ps3 since they find our exclusives this year extremely heavy. Most likely at the end of '09, half of the gamers will have both which means less fanboyism.
"they gotta get down to 300 i bet they sold a lot of used ps3's this past x-mas" Exactly - thats why I bought mine used. And yeah - it is a problem with game selection - like a lot of ppl are stating. Heck - I've owned mine for a while now and own A game for it. With no plans of anything coming out in the future to get for it. I'm going to rent KZ2 - but I don't use the PS3 for playing online because A: Sony wasn't smart enough to pack a headset with their consoles. And B: I have had not ONE good match so far in COD on the PSN from lag. If KZ2 has an amazing story (which so far by reviews sounds decent) then I would pick it up..otherwise ...just a rental. Only game for PS3 I'm waiting for is MLB 09 The Show. Thats it. It's all opinion and i"m not saying Sony has **** game exclusives. Just not very many I want. Once they lower it to $300 for an 80GB - then it will sell MUCH better. $400 for a nice bluray player is too much.
@Hvac0120 I get it, but i haven't mentioned about it. I've read about them, watched trailers. Honestly, man, those downloadable games are....well they are "bad". Especially in compare with games that are selling in real. So please don't recommend them :) It's like to tell to hungry man, who can't eat: Well, you can drink water at least ^_^
@naumchas A good way to make the distinction between those who make games and those who make consoles is this... Those who make GAMES = Developers Those who make CONSOLES = Manufacturers (those who manufacture the console) Also; You may have missed my point of games that you can legally download by purchasing them from the online stores available on all of the systems. Xbox 360 has Marketplace PS3 has Playstation (PS) Store Wii has WiiWare and Virtual Console (I think it's called the WiiShop channel?) So, if you don't have money for 50-70 dollar games, then go for the smaller, but still amazing, games available from those services for 5-20 dollars.
@naumchas, yes sorry perhaps it wasn't very clear, what i meant to say is that even though the PS3 might have a smaller user base, if 100% of that user base has to buy original games that betters for the PS3. But if for the X360 say only 50% were buying original games, then for developers PS3 would be the preferred system to get back their money. ( I made up the 50% its just a figure for illustrative purposes). I have no idea what the rate of piracy for 360 games is, it might well be low, or it might be as high as it is for PC games. but as Hvac0120 says, its not good for anyone
@Hvac0120 I've meant developers of consoles, not games. As for developers of games - u r 100% right, my friend. And i'm a bit ashamed of my country, because I simply can't afford games for 50~70 dollars per one. That's why the only way for me and others gamers in our country - is piracy. I'm not justifying it.I'm just saying about reasons why PS3 have bad sellings in Ukraine and Russia, thats all.
p.s. as for developers...well, to make a modded console - pirate have to buy an original console first. So developers get their guarantee of selling anyway. And to sell console in this way is better, than not selling them at all.
Whoa there buddy... Let's be clear...Developers are the people who make the games, not the Xbox 360 or PS3 consoles. So when you are downloading the games and not paying for them, the developers are the ones who suffer. Sony and Microsoft get their money when someone buys an Xbox 360 or PS3, but not developers. Piracy is BAD not matter what country you are in; you cannot justify it. I'm sorry that people are not willing to pay the price or do not have the money for expensive games. Maybe the people around you should try to download legal games which you can buy NEW from Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Store and Wii Virtual Console for $15 and under. There are some great titles available that way without STEALING.
@flyingteddy, first part of ur comment I understand. But the last part I dont actually get what are u talking about ... well maybe I just have to learn English a little bit more ^_^ In countries like Ukraine, Russia etc people dont have a habit to pay a lot of money for games. They just download them or buy for 10 dollars, not for 50 or even higher. As I've sad before - I'm ready to buy original PS3 and original games for it.But it HAVE to be a little more cheaper. p.s. as for developers...well, to make a modded console - pirate have to buy an original console first. So developers get their guarantee of selling anyway. And to sell console in this way is better, than not selling them at all. Just an example.Today, PS3 in Ukraine\Russia not selling good.I'm afraid it is selling extremely awful. And when PS3 will become modded - selling ratings will automatically raise a lot higher than the Xbox 360.
@naumchas, i'm not sure how easy piracy will help x360, developers would prefer the ps3, if the sales are guaranteed. I'm actually impressed that that ps3 has not been easily compromised in the 2 years its been out. If there are 7 million more x360 users, that wont matter if say 10m download games or buy pirated games.
@TheArcade, I was responding to a post that is now deleted, which had said that PS2 had high number of failures, i was just saying it's the % of them that matters as out of the 140m there was not a high % of failures. but the xbox had reports as high as 1 out of 3 when it first came out. i know now thats not the case and the 360 is much more reliable but it wasn't fair to compare the ps2 failure rate to the 360.
Sorry for double posting. The price for XBox 360 games that I've written before is for modded games. Original games costs 50dollars. When for PS3 prices are from 50 to 75 dollars. As you can see - in our country it is only the choice: - play modded games on modded console which is less expensive - play original games on original consoles which is a lot more expensive
Hi everyone.I'm from Ukraine (so be prepare for bad English). In my country situation is exactly the same. XBOX 360 is overselling PS3. We have three factors for this: 1.We have financial crisis and not much gamers cant afford PS3 for themselves because of the price of console and games. PS 3 costs approximately 500 dollars and games alone costs ~ 50 dollars. When the price for XBOX 360 is 370 dollars and games are selling only for 7,5 dollars. 2.Second reason is that PS3 is not chip-modded\cracked (as PS2 was) and XBOX 360 is modded. 3.Most gamers have a lot of PS2 games that are downloaded from Internet and they just simply cant launch them on PS3. As for me - I'd prefer PS3 than XBox 360 because of exclusive games, but the price is tooooo high. And if situation will not change - I will learn closer XBox 360 than PS3...how disappointing
@blackace "I don't think it'll catch the XBox 360" ... "Once the Xbox 360 gets below $150, it's all over" First of all, X360 is suffering a lack in future AAA titles while Playstation 3 is YET to reveal any! Killzone 2 (System Seller) GT5 (System Seller) Final Fantasy VS XIII (System Seller) God of War 3 (System Seller) Shadow of the colossus's sequel (very highly anticipated) No Xbox 360 owner can miss AT LEAST one of these titles! by the time the PS3 receives a 100$ price cut, I guess most X360 owners will eventually own a PS3! add up the world leading Playstation fanbase which cant afford a 400$ PS3 when it lacks AAA games (MGS4 is pretty much the only really really incredible title ... LBP was also amazing, but being an all new IP, Genre ... it didn't commercially succeed as much as expected) Second of all, even if Microsoft cuts 360 down to 150$ that wouldn't do much since almost every gamer can already afford it ... besides, 250$ priced Wii proved that fanbase is the most important thing for any console! it's selling way more than X360 even when it costs 50 bucks more! considering the Playstation fanbase, the PS3 will definitely oversell X360, but It'll take a while.
One of the problems Sony has is in the games sales. The attachment rate of the PS3 is still too low to make up for the cost of the machine. Its only at about 2 games per console compared to over 7 for the 360. Sony need to make the money back for the development of the machine and the loss per unit at retail in games sales and its not having a good time at it. I know of a couple of people who got a PS3 for its blue ray features, Sony will never get the money they lost on those consoles back. How many other machines were sold as blue ray players only? It may have won Sony the HD format war but delaying the PS3 for the blue ray drive seems to have lost them the console war. I wonder if it was worth it.
@Hvac0120: If my request is acceptable perhaps we can have intellectual debates on a friendly level. If there is anything you want to say regarding my posts on Gamespot or if you'd like to rap about the console war then send me a PM.
@flyingteddy: Wrong. In addition to console sales it's also about how many quality games each platform brings to the table, not the % of failures.
