Technology giant's game business posts diminished revenue, profit due to "lower" sales of PS3, PSP hardware and software sales.
Sony's game unit continues to slide. The company reported sales for the quarter ended September 30 today, revealing revenue slipped 15.8 percent year-on-year from ¥176 billion ($2.2 billion) to ¥148.2 billion ($1.9 billion), with operating income also falling from ¥3 billion ($37.5 million) to ¥2.3 billion ($29 million).
Sony attributed the downturn to "lower" sales of PlayStation 3 and PSP hardware and software, though the company said this was partially offset by contributions from PlayStation Vita. Additionally, profits were down due to the slower sales, as well as "unfavorable" foreign exchange rates.
As for specific sales figures, Sony sold 3.5 million combined units of the PS3 and PS2 compared to 4.9 million during this time last year. The PSP and PlayStation Vita moved 1.6 million units during the three-month period, down slightly from the 1.7 sold year-over-year. Of note, this time last year, the PS Vita had not yet gone on sale.
Concerning software, the PS3 and PS2 accounted for 41.4 million combined unit sales during the period, up compared to the 40.2 million sold a year ago. The PSP and PS Vita added 8.7 million units, up year-over-year from 8.2 million. Again, the latter figure only accounts for PSP sales.
In all, Sony posted revenue of ¥1.6 trillion ($20.1 billion) for the quarter, up from ¥1.57 trillion ($19.6 billion) hauled this time last year. Losses for the period came in at ¥15.4 billion ($192.4 million), better than the ¥26.9 billion ($336.2 million) hit the company took last year.
Damn didn't know it was that bad Sony. I'm sure there is no need to worry, Sony is known for being unbelievably obnoxious when it comes to resiliance. They'll manage.
i think i am done with sony. this maybe be the first gaming system with sony`s name on it i will skip. i am sure you all heard my story about my ps1, ps2,ps3 60 gig... well early this year i bought another thing from sony. the *psp phone* sony exphia or something like that. i have been switching each year upgrading my cell phones and i was able to get the psp phone for 50 bucks.i didnt get this phone because i needed a new 1. i just got to have fun with. it took great pictures and videos, great sound. came with 8 games includded. only problem i had with it was i couldnt accept pictures or anything besides normal texts from people. i didnt mind that too much. but last month my gf texted me and the screen was really dark? didnt know what was going on it showed no sings of anything wrong to that point.after i think about it a few seconds i try to power it off then turn it back on. too late! it was already off and will not turn back on at all. i know i have had bad luck with sony but i cant believe out of all the cell phones i have every had this would be the first and only one of my phones that ever straight up died on me! this is the final straw for me. i will not buy the ps4 or the ps vita now. i just dont trust sony on anything anymore. its a real shame because sony and the ps1 helped me get back into gaming. but after being burned sooo many times by them i have to say its over i done with em for good!
I feel like the guys at Sony have sort of lost their own magic.... They didn't even bother coming up with memorable start-up screens when you start a PS3 or Vita game. Starting a Playstation 1 or 2 game felt so satisfying? even the PSP had a decent start-up screen. As for the games, very few of them are memorable or charming in any way, and unfortunately I think the same could be said for most games of this generation.
How dare they make an issue of this, do they expect to whine for sympathy when their prices fail in the arena of capitalism? To put it kindly, you guys knew exactly what you were doing with your pricing schemes and trends, so I don't know why this should be a surprise or even an issue except to Sony's chagrin.
soon sony will give up the console race, and just help create its games for nintendo and Microsoft at this rate lol. There is no way Sony can afford to keep going toe to toe with Microsoft this upcoming next gen console race smh.
As all the other systems are past their prime and have done their part for CEO and company, it looks like Vita is still the biggest problem for Sony. Not to mention PS2 and 3 have to contend with the imminent launch of Wii U; I don't see anything wrong with their numbers.
Lets be honest....ports don't work we'll on ps3, (skyrim, lol, fallout 3 freezes at lvl 30, Bayonetta, etc) you always come out over priced and underpowered, ( vita),( 256mb ram on ps3..(.Unless your fight with the poor cell processor..lol))??,, few great exclusives , you sell 3d movies to RENT for 8$,,. React to slow to the market and honestly seem like you don't care for your customers much.........
PS3 and PS2 figures arent bad i think, im pretty sure that they're down because of the PS2 figures not the PS3, u cant expect the PS2 sell out after 12 years and with the next gen beginning so soon
By adding more DLC sells, they could see more sell fall. It would probably encourage people to pirate games as well.
Vita hasn't been selling to well.. should have waited for a better line up and removed some unnecessary features to lower the price at launch.
I hope SONY can start making more of a profit in all its gaming sectors. They have shown alot of commitment to the gamers with PS plus and the cross buy vita stuff. Also buy Gaikai and things to innovate in the future. I think they're starting to realize when you offer added value people are more willing buy into it.
Not surprised. It does seem this gen is slowing down a bit with the anticipation of new consoles coming out soon.
It's pretty simple. Lower the price of your consoles, they aren't that good to warrant such a high price.
I always chuckle when people start saying a company is going down the gurgler because they only made "this many billion" instead of "that many billion". I'd be happy with just a million! :P
Sony is going down the toilet and I say good riddance! And no it is not the video game branch that has made me hate Sony it is the fact they tried to screw me over a computer once and the high prices they charge for lower quality electronics. They were once known for truly HQ electronics, but those days are over. Samsung came in and kicked their asses in the HDTV sector by making cheaper higher quality sets over Sony although Samsung is beginning to drop the ball and LG and Panasonic are about to take Samsung down a few notches.
i jus got a 55 inch led lg, lovin it too. Kratos has never looked so sexy
@JasPlun Samsung TV's are cheaper than Sony's, because of the aforementioned unfavorable foreign exchange rates. That's why Korean companies like Samsung, and LG, are doing better than their Japanese counterparts Sony, and Panasonic.
@JasPlun also not sure when and if this is still proceeding but Sony and Samsung are partners in the tv market. I know that sony manufactured their higherquality screens for a while
Only Televisions worth buying from Sony were the XBR series and they stopped making them like the dumb asses they are!
@JasPlun yeah I have an xbr 36incher in my basement....the thing is a tank and I could probably use it as an anchor should the water levels rise
I got my ps3 250gb slim and MGS4 for $135 by trading in my xbox360 elite....stop bitching and tell MS where they can put their bargaining chips
Meh not worried. PS3s have nearly caught up with 360 sales in recent years.Price cut and constant new IPs/first party IPs helped a lot.
I have a 360 but for the most part it collects dust.Mainly because i dislike Gears and Halo.Ill be getting Halo 4 but still i mainly use my 360 for Fable 2.
Multiplatforms i get on my computer and exclusives i get on my ps3.
@WolfGrey Looks like we're on the same boat. These days my 360 is practically useless to me, the only game I'm gonna play on 360 is Halo 4 and nothing else until next year. I use my multiplaform on my pc and mostly game on ps3 not only for exclusives, but also games that comes with multiple disc on 360. Thats why I bought resi 6 and AC 3 on the ps3.
Same here, multiplats on PC and PS3 exclusives. SONY's quality exclusives catalog has alot more up its sleeve than 1 FPS (Halo) and 1 TPS( Gears) imo
@WolfGrey ^ This.
PS4 news inbound.
Lol, Gamespot.com will report this tomorrow, but here you can have it now :
If the report is accurate, Sony will be using Blu-Ray again, which will drop the price of the PS4 considerably. The PS3 was so expensive at it was using proprietary Cell CPU, and of course the main culprit was the inclusion of the Blu-Ray Drive. Instead of supporting some new format for PS4, they can re-use Blu-Ray and keep costs down to just CPU/GPU. That's what the 720 is going to do after all.
@SolidTy No credible source at all. All PS4 rumors are fanmade and only fanboys are gullible enough to believe it. I'm calling it bogus.
Call the existence of a PS4 bogus, it's your choice.
I'm sure you will come back years from now and tell us all in a few years that you were incorrect. You seem very reputable.
Anyways, I have to go play some Starcraft II with friends, happy posting.
A report from "anonymous sources". And how do we know these sources are, what's the word... CREDIBLE? What GAMERS have to realize is that rumor and speculation are not news, and things aren't true because you keep repeating them. Then again, where would the sorry excuse for video game journalism be without it?
@CaptainHerlock Oh, and as I said GS would report it late. They just did : http://www.gamespot.com/news/playstation-4-dev-kits-shipping-to-developers-report-6399367#generic_comments
My only point was that GS would report it late, lol.
You missed my point, my point was Gamespot.com is reporting this tomorrow most likely as they are almost always late to the scene with news, sharing scraps of old news from other sites with us a large share of the times.
As far as reports go, I never said it was credible, why would I? Obviously nothing is official until Sony releases info, same for 720 and Wii U news. That's rumors for ya.
What you have to realize is I am not saying the Report is accurate, as I said :
"If the report is accurate..."
Anyways, if you have a problem with the source, take it up with the source or with Gamespot.com tomorrow when they once again report the news late.
The rest of your post was just preaching to a straw man. I didn't necessarily disagree, but it was off subject.
You may need to reread industry contracts and websites more carefully. Durango is only one followup name, and it's far newer than the 720 moniker which predates Durango. Much like PS4 and the more recent Orbis rumors.
In fact, I encourage you to read the recently released Bungie-Activision Contract formed quite some time ago which specifically used the 720 moniker.
The 720 is definitely widely known, it's a shame it's new to you and you find it so distasteful, but you are a fish swimming upstream at this point.
How you feel about the codename is irrelevant. I direct you now to Willy Shakes who put it best :
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose (720), By any other name would smell (play) as sweet;"
Woah, you really got a lot of vitriol. Irrelevant posting ftw.
I'll break it down layman style : You don't seem to comprehend anything I post and instead are arguing for arguing sake. You've made zero headway and are preaching to an audience of one.
My goodness, this conversation is over.
And don't pull the "gamer" straw man argument to make yourself appear smarter than you actually are. A few years ago everyone was citing "Occam's Razor". What's next? Plato's Cave Allegory? I wasn't born yesterday, that's why I'm not buying it.
And yet GameSpot will in turn SPREAD rumors and speculation and treat it as if it were actually "news", and gamers who either don't know or don't care, will believe it as if it were. It's a vicious circle.
sit back on microsoft
and theyll get cha
theyre a pretty serious monopoly
and theyve got alot invested in xbox
