Sonic Generations speeding to 3DS, PC
Sega Sammy lists two more versions of mascot's upcoming 20th anniversary adventure in annual financial presentation; release set for this winter.
It appears Sonic Generations will be running on more platforms than previously thought. In its annual financial results presentation, Sega parent company Sega Sammy listed PC and 3DS editions of the game alongside the already announced Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. All versions of the game were listed with a winter 2011 release window.
The game might mark the 3DS debut of Sega's iconic speedster. While the publisher has previously announced Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games for the platform, it has not committed to a release window yet. The original Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games arrived on the Wii in November of 2007 and on the DS in January of 2008, even though the Beijing Olympics they were tied to didn't kick off until August of 2008.
When it arrives, Sonic Generations will commemorate Sonic the Hedgehog's 20th anniversary. Therefore, Sega will be touching upon three different treatments of its fleet-footed mascot, beginning with the classic 2D side-scrolling age and progressing to the hedgehog's 3D adventures. Specifically, these eras are the 2D Genesis days, 3D's introduction with the Dreamcast, and then today's modern HD graphics phase.
Sega has rebuilt a number of levels from games gone by for Sonic Generations, and players will be able to speed through these stages in 2D and 3D perspectives. Sonic's abilities will also depend on the incarnation that players choose, as the spin dash and spin attacks will be open to Sonic 2D, while his 3D persona will be able to use the homing attack and sonic boost abilities.
