I know you'll never take a hint, but I would like to hear something you can actually follow up upon now... unless it's the same old broken record some odd 10 posters have discredited you for. good day!
John Smedley indicates new installment in long-running MMOFPS will feature "massive battles on a scale no other FPS will touch."
Sony Online Entertainment has yet to formally announce a new installment in its massively multiplayer first-person shooter franchise PlanetSide, but the company has recently made strong overtures toward its existence. In late September, the company solicited input from all past and present PlanetSide gamers, saying in an e-mail reposted by PlanetSide Universe, "We plan to expand the PlanetSide universe with another game and we need your help with the design."
As part of a recent post to his personal blog, SOE president John Smedley addressed the prospects of a new installment in the franchise, one he dubbed PlanetSide Next.
"To me, PlanetSide Next means we get a chance to take the essence of everything that was fun in PlanetSide and make it a lot better," he wrote. "Massive battles on a scale no other FPS will touch. None of this 64 player stuff. REALLY MASSIVE. With much better organization and a tight focus on making sure the action is always going on, with awesome graphics." (Emphasis in original.)
Smedley's comments come as Sony and SOCOM: Navy Seals creators Zipper Interactive prep their own massive-scale first-person shooter, MAG. Short for Massive Action Game, the PlayStation 3-exclusive FPS promises online battles of 256 players, with combatants on each side filling different ranks and roles. MAG will be available for the PS3 on January 26.
Launched to positive reviews in 2003, PlanetSide gained notoriety as one of the first truly massive first-person shooters. The game accommodates hundreds of players in a single online battle, and it also supports both infantry and vehicular combat. For more on the original PlanetSide, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
Resistance 2? Counterstrike does it better. Little Big Planet? Garrys Mod does it better. (mario boxes anyone?) Killzone 2? ArmA, Counterstrike, Day of Defeat, Planetside, Half Life, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142... does it better. Demon Souls? the Witcher, Gothic, every MMO to be brought into consideration, surely does it better. Infamous... seriously? City of Heroes probably does it better. Uncharted 2 - isn't this just gears of war with crash bandicoot mixed in? I played those a few and a many years ago. MGS4 - I could give leniency on this one as it's always been made to be played as a dumbed-down console stealth game/movie. MAG- What's this article about above this post? Bigger and better. Planetside was bigger and better. Battleground Europe - bigger and better. Gran Turismo 5? Haha, PC get's all kinds of serious simulations, and arcade simulations like the PS3 gets. GTR 2 I'm assuming would be the closest. RACE 07 WTTC too. rFactor for sure, enjoy constant new content and updates to keep you playing for years. Live for Speed gets updates the size of full ps3 games as well, not to mention support for massive amounts of online players for much further realism in the multiplayer aspect. Of course, low pings and your choice of server to choose! (another gizmo missing from most console games) every offroad game made for consoles cannot top Richard Burns Rally which was released some years ago as a rally simulation.
I think everyone in here is done arguing with you. The fact is the pc has better games with substantially larger updates and new content provided free, has hundreds of new exclusive titles every two months (ever heard of indie games?) it has the best sounding voip, requires the most hand eye coordination, picks up more audio, runs faster, has the most replayability and best of all keeps out most underage console fanboys who are that emotionally challenged by simple hardware that runs video games. You were discredited the second you said ''ps3 has better graphics'' and ''mouse requires no skill'' The only thing you seem to be grasping onto now that you've been proven wrong on every other front is that "PS3 gets more "AAA" exclusive titles". Well, if 7 games really makes your console better than surely you have to be right. 7. Even though I don't play it, I'm sure your average World of Warcraft player has more hours invested than all of those for you combined.
@ BrandonC3000 its not an arguement, its a fact that PS3 releases AAA titles more frequently then PC. if people are trying to debate this obvious fact then what am i supposed to do? they got me a list of AAA titles which date back like 15 years.......im sure they cant compare them with games of this generation. then they tried to change the topic by saying PC's communication is better...........yh wow, i care about the games more.
@ Inconnux mouse and keyboad is more easier to use....... remember your the one who said the mouse users owned people playing with xbox controllers at some game..........or was that your fellow pc fanboy who said that??? you contradict your self so much.........its funny how desperate you are to defend an overpriced machine with no good exclusives and a controlling method a person with an iq of 10 can master.
@ Inconnux their not exclusives. i can go down to the shop and get an xbox arcade for £100 and play half the games u mentioned. anyways their still not better then the ones i listed. COD4 is but thats better on console with less aimbots, hackers and glitchers.........and the maps dont have 100 people in them so you can actually play with skill rather then spam granade and spray a full auto wep.
@ Sameo yh you need patches and updates because PC games are so boring they cant stand without them. on PS3 we actually get a finished product worthy of being called an AAA title without any updates to it. you can make up all the rubbish you want, fact is that you had to go over a decade to find as many AAA titles as i did in the past 2 years for ps3. maybe ur internet connection is rubbish or your going deaf, i can hear perfectly through my ps3 headset. anyways, communication is no substitute for good exclusives.......and never will be. id rather play top games without a headset then rubbish ones with military grade technology.
Are you serious? Are people STILL HAVING THIS F UCKING ARGUMENT? STFU. If you like PS3, get a PS3. If you like X360, get an X360, if you like PC, get a PC. Stop whining! Jesus Christ.
He's just a troll Inconnux, nobody is that stupid... or he was born sometime after 1996. Seriously, "no dev support" (we get more patches and updates for our games than any console game ever has... ever) quite literally every thing you have said and responded with has been wrong. I appreciate the effort though. I like how my list of everything the PC does and does better is countered with "crap voip headset and unresponsive thumbpad thats limited to a clunky buddy interface"
What games to I play that are better than PS3 titles? here are the games that I have played regularly in the last year - CoD: 4 - definitely a AAA title that outsells any PS3 title - Team Fortress 2 - a great multiplayer game... - Day of Defeat : source - sure its older but it has an active community -CS:S - just how many games try to imitate this game??? almost every FPS online game on the market... - Left 4 Dead - one of the most innovative online games made - Dawn of War: Soulstorm - its an RTS so you can automatically count out any console being able to play it because of the noobstick... - Mass Effect - since playing videogames in the PONG era, I have yet to play a better RPG. Outstanding... a work of art. - Plants vs Zombies - ?!?! video games are about fun... and this game packs more fun than 99% big budget games on the market... designed by a former Blizzard employee... if you own a PC you must check this game out. fps_dominated... you just sound like a bitter fanboy who has no clue... but I guess when you own the bottom selling console in the market you have to justify your purchase somehow...
@ fps_d0minat0r the more you type the more of a mindless fanboy you appear to be.... I already answered why PS3 games won't be ported over... they use a PROPRIETARY GRAPHICS LIBRARY... to port it you have to almost re code the entire game... the mouse keyboard combination is not 'easier' to use.. it is just more precise... a console controller is DESIGNED so a 3 yr old can pick it up and use it. This is not a difficult concept to grasp. Once someone masters the mouse/keyboard though the difference is night and day... nongamers can NOT just jump into an FPS because they use a mouse/keyboard... log into any CS server and see what happens to a nongamer. On the other hand I was able to easily compete the FIRST TIME I picked up an Xbox360 controller and played Halo... I wasn't great, but I was competitive.
@ sameo ps3 has bluetooth and usb capability for keypads and headsets. i dont know why u bother arguing if you dont know your basic facts. and yes i want more, what i want are AAA games...........talking can only be done when theres good games to play. PC unfortunatly cant match ps3's lineup. when it can ill be sure to get a PC.......a better one then u.
@ inconnux actually i dont know about u but i had a computer way before a gaming console. i switched to console because lack of PC developer support. and anyone can use a keyboard.........even non-gamers who sit in the office all day and make more clicks then you do by gaming. and ive played CSS a lot.......... i also used to be one of the best at UT instagib. why do u think in UT3 PS3 people with mouse/keyboards always win???? maybe because its easier.......next best thing to cheating????
@ inconnux any moron in the world knows every game is made on PC. but until pc can play them games their not called PC titles. whats so hard about this? killzone 2 is not a pc title just because it was made on pc. what are the chances of it, and other ps3 exclusives being ported?? 0% and btw i admitted crysis has better graphics then any ps3 game, however thats about it, in every other aspect it fails. so u spent $600 and u dont have games anywhere near ps3? thats is a waste of money. name me AAA titles that have been released since u got ur pc. in the past 2 years i cant think of any. was it you that named me a bunch of games which were 9/10 standards in the 1990's???? try comparing games in the same time frame.
they need to take a clue from games like Crysis and CoD4. The single best feature in crysis was the tactical options provided by the suit. Take the gameplay speed, customization options/setup from CoD4 and you've got a winner.
Have been playing this game for over 3 years I found that this was the only MMO worth paying to play. Now that being said while I love Planetside and the fact that you are able to switch your style of play if you want every six hours by recerting your certification points. The game does have its problems. The server merges of Emerald and Markov I do believe it was definately did help in the population issues. However, there were other things that kept Planetside to a niche market. SOE has the bad habit of not listening to the community when balancing issues that were obvious needed to be fixed Lasher anybody? some other issues included graphics, but that is kind of a non point now people are judging a fps that was in production for how long so by 2003 graphic standards they were acceptable. Population and the balance were the games biggest issues. the introduction of BFR's ( Battle Frame Robotics) also changed alot of things. So hopefully this time around with SOE having one Planetside under their belt they will take what they have learned and listen to the community this time around. Heres to playing the next Planetside MMOFPS because the only other one would be Huxley whenever that stops getting delayed
id hope any FPS style MMO would have a persistent worlds and player induced changes instead of resetting a server each day.
So by your logic fps, you always use your fists to kill people in the game because guns are too "easy". I hate playing FPS games on a gamepad soley because I grew up playing them with a mouse and keyboard. It doesn't make me less skilled, it's a choice. Console FPS are great, no one can say the contrary based on Halo alone. I own a 360, PS3, and a great PC. Given the choice I will always play PC. It's a matter of opinion. But don't knock the PC, without them, your precious consoles would not be where they are in the terms of hardware.
Planetside is a game with such huge potential, doing a lot of stuff right while doing a lot of stuff very wrong, such as the horrible engine, huge balance issues, and lots of downtime.I would love for them to develop the next Planetside right all the way through. But this is SOE we're talking about so, i don't have my hopes up. For the record anyone who even hints that KB&M takes no skill, let alone flat out says it, is a jealous MORON who has zero valid opinions. No getting around that.
Oh nice. I had no idea. Maybe I won't have to hope for a Starcraft-based Planetside clone after all. Bring on a new Planetside!
A next MMOFPS sounds good to me. Though i am allways a little sceptical when it comes to SOE. They do at first make good MMO's, but tend to ruin them later on. Wait and see approach for me.
Sounds interesting. Too bad Smedley and SOE wound up on my blacklist after the CU/NGE debacle on Star Wars Galaxies. They've seen the last of my cash and if/when the company goes belly-up, the first champaigne glass raised will be mine.
Planetside was great back in its day. A 3-way fight reflected some of the genius behind the MMO Dark Age of Camelot, but Planetside was much easier to jump into and start having fun. Planetside's most obvious flaw was that all of the main bases were exactly the SAME in architecture, so that fighting over the same bases over and over again got old sooner than it should.
Wow..good to see the human race still rips at each others throats over a game going to the console. Hey I know..how about we just realize that, there is nothing we can do and you will be forced to use a controller for some games, and a mouse and keyboard for others. Holy crap that was hard.
@ Inconnux - thank you. I feel you make an extremely valid point in your comment, although I can't help feeling it's a little strange how most of the comments on this page don't actually mention the topic in question once :D
@fps_d0minat0r Time for a reality check... the console controller was designed so that anyone can use it... from hardcore gamers to 3 year olds. Heres a little test for you... sit down a 3 yr old with a noobstick... the little tyke will be able to pick it up right away... why? because the console controller was designed so that even a 3yr old could use it... now sit this same 3yr old in front of a computer and let him try using a mouse/keyboard... this kid will have a much harder time... why? because there are so many keys and the precision of the mouse is difficult to master. There is price for this ease of usage... they have to dumb games down for the consoles to make it work with the console controller... Thats why RTS games don't work at all on a console and FPS games are far better on a mouse/keyboard. Games that are designed to be released on a console rarely sell well on the PC because PC gamers are used to a far more sophisticated form of gameplay... Games initially designed for the PC and then ported over generally do better because when the developer ports over they can dumb the game down for the noobstick. @king_bobo I didn't give you a thumbs down because you were honest, you said you enjoyed consoles better because accessibility... this boils down to ease of use which consoles excel at.
Not to mention terrible sounding voice (ventrilo, teamspeak, mumble, skype) and lack of instant easy communication (xfire, steam friends, aim, gamespy comrade, msn, icq, yahoo.. .typing on a keyboard.) ... or dedicated servers(chi town players connect to dedicated scrim server located... in chitown!) or pug matchmaking irc's.. or the use of headphone quality sound to pick up footsteps and flanks... or modded servers for added replayability like surfing in css.. fun mods like fireworks or custom sounds / songs to play for everyone..maps, admin features, advertising, console commands, bindings.. do you want more :P
I didn't go anywhere except Gamespot > PC > Browse PC Games > Browse All Games I don't need to search for anything when the information is right there. You're obviously mad... why I cannot figure out. Your playstation has 7 exclusive games and thats why the pc is a waste of money? You do realize the pc has practically every MMO which automatically puts it about 50 titles ahead of the PS3 right? That's one genre alone. Your argument about ''pc being too easy'' does not make any sense either. You have a more elaborate sense of aiming, where in which everyone else you play with does too.. that means the game takes much higher hand eye coordination. You have a vastly superior layout of keys which allows for even more to be put into the gameplay. You've got more than an entire consoles worth of controls right in the palm of your left hand. In single player games it means you no longer need stupid things like health regeneration or 16 hit kills with notifiers or nade notifiers since your television doesn't pick up the pixels.
Okay, I'm not entirely sure why there's currently a debate over whether PC or consoles are better, but all I know for sure is that I prefer playing consoles. I'm not going to say they're better, because this is clearly a matter of opinion; I just prefer the accessibility of them, and prefer the use of controllers and a larger screen (granted, both are available on PC, but I have neither). Essentially, although I'm probably going to get thumbed down simply because I've said I prefer playing consoles over PC's (although some FPS's and all RTS's tend to be much easier to control on PC), I wanted to say this: if it's no subscription, count me in, if it's on consoles as well, count me double in. :)
@fps_d0minat0r: So you're point is that the mouse and keyboard is such a natural way to play an FPS that it's not enough of a challenge for you? Jump on a COD or Counterstrike server on a PC and see how easy you think it is. It's an interesting tendency to gravitate towards the control scheme that makes less sense. I guess that's what makes it not "boring"? Unless you're that kinda guy... you wouldn't want to drive to the supermarket to carry your groceries home because it would be too easy, right? Rather walk and turn up your nose at all those lazy drivers?
I liked this game back in the day but it was way ahead of it's time. Normally that's a good thing except in this case it caused it to be mostly unplayable from day one. The lag was so horrible that all of my friends quit before the free period was up. I played it a while later and it worked much better but the player base was mostly non existent. There were times I felt like I was the only one playing. Hopefully they will not make the same mistakes this time.
@fps_d0minat0r let me tell you a little secret about game development... the are almost ALL developed on a PC... (yes I know some are done on a mac). The reason that most games on the PC are not exclusive is because it is quite simple to port a game from the PC (using DirectX) to the Xbox360 (using DirectX!!!). The reason that the PS3 has 'exclusives' is because it uses a difficult to program proprietary graphics/games library. This alone makes it hard to port games designed for a PS3 to the PC. If Sony had any brains they would have used an industry standard library like OpenGL so it would be easy to port... damn they could have even used DirectX if they wanted... Waste of hardware? lol I payed $600 for my desktop 2 years ago and it still plays the vast majority of games just fine... and it can do far more than play games!!! amazing but true... your average PC is anything but a waste of hardware.
@ StonedImaculate thats why its not good.......its too easy. everyone here is proving my point but their not understanding it..........whats so hard to understand, a mouse is the easiest controller type. easy = boring.
@ Inconnux your right, pc is better. too bad its not got better exclusives though, waste of hardware.
Why are they even bothering with this? Do they really think enough people will be interested in this game? Tabula Rasa all over again if you ask me. And why exactly do they think that battles on this scale will be fun, let alone work well? With that many players I imagine it will be a huge free for all where no one really knows what is going on and the lag will be unbearable even if you have an awesome computer I doubt there servers will handle that kind of bandwidth. I will let SOE's history speak as proof to what I am saying. Oh and Smedley is also the guy who who thought that the changes they ultimately made to star wars galaxies were good and exciting ideas... I am honestly not sure how he is still employed with SOE after that whole fiasco.
@ Lifeshifter keyboard and mouse has no skills compared to a dualthumbstick controller. i find it hard to believe u find playing an fps with a mouse being "skilled" @ StonedImaculate ha ha very funny...... you should have helped sameo with some exclusives instead since he had to go back to legacy days looking for them.
@ Sameo thts a very very small list considering you went all the way back to the 1990's. you want me to add in ps2 and ps1 games?? your proving my point but your not understanding it...........pc doesnt have enough exclusives to waste money on.
I love PS3, but PC is the best thing out there. Upgradeable, better graphics, better controls (if you prefer controllers then get one that works with PCs), multiplayer is more fun, tons of games that can only be found on it, and probably my favorite exclusive feature: games you can mod, and download mods for.
Anything a PS3 or Xbox can do, a PC can do better. The technology exists to make your PC as fast or powerful as any console. Hell, you can even use a Wii controller on PC. The only question is what games comes to what, but pretty much as long as you have better hardware for something, then it will be better.
@Zoomer30: No, you don't have to spend that much. I spent about $600 on my PC and have been playing The Witcher on my 50" Panasonic 1080p Plasma with high detail, AA and AF. Sure I can't turn Crysis up to "Enthusiast" on EVERY setting, just a handful, enough to make it look better than any other game I've played and still run consistently over 30 fps. Maybe things have changed since you last looked into it, but to say that throwing numbers out there like $1500 is a gross exaggeration would be an understatement.
Honestly, if you don't believe the mouse rapes sticks all day, check out Shadowrun, the first game where PC users could play Xboxers. They had to gimp PCs to keep it fair.
@fps_d0minat0r And just to twist the knife a little, here's another example for you: Mass Effect (XBOX360): 8.5 Mass Effect (PC): 9.0 "easy to recommend the PC version over the 360 version"
@fps_d0minat0r: you're making an argument that suggests that using a mouse and keyboard for FPS works so much better than a gamepad that it's cheating. don't worry, it's not your fault, you were probably dropped on your head as a child.
@fps_d0minat0r lolol hopefully they will make this game so that PC's and PS3's can compete head to head... watch all the noobstick users get owned... I know they won't do this because noobstick users will get frustrated at how imprecise their controller is compared to a mouse/keyboard... damn, noobstick users would be better off using a Wii controller! Maybe Sony will release their motion control system before the game comes out to make the PS3 competitive vs the PC. Maybe then the PS3 will be as good as a PC... maybe...
and thats fine and dandy zoomer nobody here has anything against that... i'm pretty sure were all just baffled by the responses from the obvious poster down below
Im not going to spend $1500 to $2000 dollars just so I can play a game on an under 30 inch monitor just to get AA. No thanks. My days of spending buku bucks just to play a few games on my PC are OVER. I know, the PC fanbois will be like "oh you dont have to spend that much"....uh, yes you do, if you want AA like Sameo. Unless you like playing a FPS at under 10 fps. I will take my PS3 and my 40 inch Bravia any day over a much overpriced PC upgrade that will just be out of date in a year or 2.
fps_d0minat0r - Dude I own all the consoles and a bomb gaming PC but I prefer playing FPS's on my PC just because it takes more skill to do so, console fanboys pick up console games because its pick and play but the guy who builds his computer plays his pc games has more of a head on his shoulders than the average lazy joe picking up and play console games, granted I play the games that are exclusive to the consoles on the consoles but if I have a choice for shooters i'll play them on the PC nuff said If there was a chance to play a cross platform game, me on pc and you on your ps3 then you would get pwned six ways from sunday and there isnt any way to argue that just because PC FPS's have such a higher point of sensitivity than the consoles do regardless of its turned all the way up, if you played the same game on both platforms you would know the difference. If you were a real "gamer" you would know these things not just a pick up and play fanboy
Hey guys, I feel horrible for how bad fps_dominator's life must be. Aside from almost certain sexual abuse, this kid is undoubtedly a virgin. I'm starting a 'Get Dominator Laid' fund, please send a PM if you're willing to do your part and donate. Don't give up dominator, there's always hope!
