Sleeping Dogs PC encouraged by Square Enix

Developer says work on Windows version of open-world crime game was strengthened after rights were purchased by Square Enix.

Sleeping Dogs' PC version was better received by many than its console counterparts, and its developers say much of that came from support it received from Square Enix. United Front Games told the Penny Arcade Report that Square Enix, its second publisher for the open-world crime game after Activision, pushed for a higher-quality PC version.

Sleeping Dogs was originally developed as True Crime: Hong Kong under Activision, but was canceled in February 2011. Activision planned to outsource work on the PC version, but Square Enix encouraged United Front to commit internal assets toward making the PC version shine after purchasing the rights to Sleeping Dogs in August 2011.

"When the game changed hands from Activision to Square Enix, Square was incredibly supportive of the PC version and actually wanted us to do more with it," senior producer Jeff O'Connell said. "It was at that point that we began to focus more resources on the PC version and it became what it is."

These resources were used to include a free high-definition texture pack for PC players, interface optimizations, and support for multiple monitors and stereoscopic 3D. GameSpot's review stated that "the PC version is easily the best-looking version of the game."

O'Connell said creating a quality PC version was beneficial for players as well as the team; despite the game's long development cycle, "a lot of people seeing the PC version got excited again." The PC platform is particularly relevant internationally, he said, and vocal PC gamers strongly influence the conversation surrounding a release.

Square Enix's publishing efforts have emphasized the platform in the past, also promoting the PC version of August 2011's Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

I cant believe that people can actually be this delusional. The only reason SE is in love with the pc right now is because the console hardware is completely rubbish and it is actually limiting the developers imagination in making a game. Just wait till xbox 720 and ps4 are released and then we will get statements from SE that " Due to increasing piracy we just cant afford to spend resources on a quality pc port".

Period. Anybody who disagrees with be obviously needs a medical check-up.

BTW, I'm a PC gamer and own no consoles so don't mistake be with a console fanboy.

I think, I'm going buy this game, i heard it was really good from a publisher who publish Deus Ex Human Revolution(not the best, but is a cool game). I still looking through the review, and so far its being positive on the game :\

Respect to the folk behind the PC version. You're all awesome.

And between this and Deus Ex HR I'm pumped for Tomb Raider and Hitman, safe to say those will be some quality ports too

well done Square Enix!!!! I'm glad the company is focussing on PC version...For us as PC gamers, we are definitely support the developer for producing PC version quality and best games because we appreciate and salute their effort..Sleeping Dogs are the one of the best game ever I've played...I'm so glad the Square Enix took over Activision and focusing on PC version and did not delay the game PC version...The Square Enix made them popular among PC gamers unlike UBISOFT which keep on delay the PC games, states a lof of rubbish... When Sleeping Dogs was announced, I was wondering what was this game...Then I searched at youtube and watched the gameplay and trailer..After that, I was immediately impressed with the gameplay and story and told myself when the PC game on sale, I will definitely buy this game..

Please Square Enix, please keep on produce more games just like Sleeping Dogs...I am absolutely love this game...Now I am impatiently waiting your next game TOMB RAIDER... Keep up your good work... SALUTE SQUARE ENIX for emphasing on PC gamers right...Please do not follow the steps of UBISOFT for neglecting PC gamers right...They just focusing on console parts which are unfair to us PC gamers...

This is so great to hear after that whole Ubisoft crap. If you make quality games people will buy them. It's simple.

Bummer though. I like having something physical. I still buy CDs. *sigh*

U.S. here too so I am thinking there is no physical copy for sale. But maybe I might buy it digitally. My PC doesn't have the space to keep everything digital though.

@Venatorcruiser ... The US. When Gamestop sells the game, but doesn't carry a physical copy, It's a safe bet there just isn't one (or at least not a legitimate one).

@jackson2415 Yeah, it's definitely a downside, but all things considered, it's one I'm willing to deal with.

Sleeping Dogs on PC is so amazing, from the story, atmospheric details; and awesome gameplay; the visuals alone are phenomenal! I hope more PC gamers grab this awesome game, you won't be disappointed. Thank you to Square Enix for saving United Front's masterpiece, those devs are badass. Square Enix has become one of my favorite publishers by making these terrific games happen, and supporting them.

Also I love that Sleeping Dogs came out when Darksiders 2 did; PC version. Could not be a better contrast in what a game on the PC should deliver which is multi-platform. You have SD with all the bells and whistles, then Darksiders 2 with...with... oh yeah nothing.

LISTEN TO YOUR CONSUMER BASE EA, ACTI and UBI!! This is the way to undermine piracy and get people to pay full value for your products! On another note, SE ANY way to get some of those RPGs you make for the consoles for PC aka Final Fantasy XIII/XIII-2, Star Ocean 4 , NIER , Dragon Quest Series, or another "frogotten game series from the 90's or 80's to the PC? You have already done those games for the Xbox 360 so why not the PC?  Overall all I have to say is this KEEP your base prices at 50$ or lower, make BUG-FREE console ports or make them on the PC, and finally have good tech-support if the game has hiccups in the market, and KEEP THE OLD MODEL FOR GAMING IN GENREAL NOT F2P OR SOULD I SAY P2W!!!

Zloth2

Yep - getting to the end of the console life cycle.  That brings two big factors to bear.  First, console tech is just plain laughable compared to PC.  Second, sales for the game you are making will be falling off a cliff once the new consoles come out.  I don't know if that second factor is such a big deal now with used game sales killing off new game sales after just a month or two anyway but the first factor is certainly there.

still when I look at this game I again think that better graphics does not make a better game in and of itself.  SO when I hear of Next gen games and that they will look way better I think ... I can just skip it. I have years of games to catch up on anyway.

While I dont want to comment on the state of FF series. Square Enix publishing games lile Just Cause 2, Sleeping Dogs and Deus Ex HR have been a success. And it looks like you can add Hitman and Tomb Raider (reboot ) in the future.

Playing this and Darksider 2 on PC side by side and the difference is phenomenal. DS2 is a sloppy "get it just about working and kick it out done" gltichy mess with NONE of the standard PC options that have been around for close to 20 years. Crashes, glitches and bugs up the arse.Sleeping Dogs on the other hand is obvious from the start they absolutely put the extra mile into it.

@DarkSaber2k Darksiders 2 is a pretty iffy port, I couldn't even play it with my keyboard and mouse due to a few functions not working. I heard they're working on a patch to fix it up though, hopefully it comes out quickly.

I'm guessing it will keep going for about a year.  Then it will be time to concentrate on being the "killer game" for the next generation console.  That or cloud gaming will take off and turn our whole world upside down.

I'm glad to hear Squeenix is taking the PC seriously after so many developers have shunned it during the current gen.

Once I get some free-time I'll have to check this out.  I've been hearing nothing but good things about it, and I hope they keep the same mentality with the upcoming Tomb Raider game.

Its great to see they did that, the PC version does indeed look fantastic. Hehe, might even buy the game on my PC after finishing it on PS3.

And its an awesome game too, Squeenix definitely didn't go wrong with picking this one up.
