A good example, if I may say, is the Undead Nightmare for Red Dead Redemption, if anyone played that. It redid the entire world and added new side quests, a main story, and alot more.
Bethesda boss Todd Howard says gamers can expect "expansion pack feel" add-ons in Elder Scrolls V; calls Fallout 3 DLC scheme "chaotic."
Bethesda Game Studios' latest Fallout game--2008's well-received Fallout 3--welcomed a whopping five downloadable add-ons over the course of its life. However, the Maryland-based studio isn't going the same route with its next role-playing game, according to Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard.
In a recent interview with AusGamers, Howard said that although Bethesda does not yet have specific plans for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim downloadable content support, he envisions that the game will welcome fewer, but "more substantial," add-ons.
"Right now, I can say that we'd like to do less DLC but bigger ones," he said. "You know, more substantial…we don't know what we're going to make yet, but we'd like them to be closer to an expansion pack feel."
Howard also offered a note about how Bethesda approached the DLC process for Fallout 3. He called the pacing of new additions to the role-playing game "very chaotic."

Shivering Isle is DLC done right and should be a model of perfection for whatever Bethesda releases.
@TheSplintercat No, people like you are to blame for DRM. You continue to buy games that have DRM and add fuel to Developers fire of "See! We NEED DRM in ALL GAMES!!!!11!1!!1! We also have to keep take things out of the game and re-release them as DLC!!!!!1!"
Expansion pack feel for an expansion pack price is probably how it'll be. I withhold judgment until I know how much content will be available.
"Bethesda Game Studios' latest Fallout game--2008's well-received Fallout 3" Did Eddie Makuch here totally miss New Vegas?
For games, I think that DLC should be small things for low prices, like a new pack of swords or a new couple of quests, while expansions should be more like a huge new area with a new story line and side quests, along with new weapons and secrets.
not going to lie, I was dying to see an expansion released for IV that allowed you to rebuild Kvatch. Every time I started to immerse myself in the world... after end game... I'd walk by Kvatch and think, "who's gonna fix that?!"
I like expansions more than single dlcs anyway. The most important thing is to make dlc that's seemlessly integrated into the game. Most of the dlc feels like it's tacked on and outside the overall atmosphere of the story.
I hope the levitation limitation from Oblivion has been taken out, flying around hopefully faster than in Morrowind
Why are so many people talking about call of duty on a skyrim page...... Why even bring up such a bad game, while your looking at one of the greatest games that's coming out this year, i just don't understand....
i hope that the dlcs will be available on all the systems immediately and not a year delay with the stupid cd code or whatever for the ps3. will buy this game either way and easily get 500 hrs out of it but would prefer not to have to wait for dlcs. come on 11/11/11!!!
@penpusher Demo? Do they even release demos now for call of duty? And so what i've downloaded black ops? I tried it out, for good 30minutes before removing it and I thought to myself it isn't worth to buy it. It's not like I uploaded the game to other people. Oh by the way, I didn't have this mentality about Call of Duty after Modern Warfare 2. I bought those with out hesitation on release and i'm concerned about future COD products.
What's scary, is when you go to the Skyrim News and Features section, you see a link for the new Bioshock. Now surely, if Skyrim is going to be a proper, old school, deep and mature cRPG, why is a game like Bioshock Infinite associated with it rather than say, The Witcher 2? Does Gamespot know something we don't and are trying to tell us Skyrim will be more action based like Bioshock? I hope not, but it's still disconcerting to look up Skyrim and see Bioshock Infinite!
@TonnFool23 still dont understand why you would bother in the first place ... you go on as if you cant stand the series fullstop, you could have downloaded a demo to see if black ops was for you btw rather than downling the whole thing
@penpusher umm I don't? I just did it on black ops didn't even play more than a hour before removing it.
@TonnFool23 It's okay that you pirate COD because the campaign is short and has a bad multiplayer. You're an idiot. If you think it is a rip-off game DON'T BUY IT! It doesn't mean it's okay to pirate it. People like you are to blame for DRM. Thanks...
@TonnFool23 .... I'm sorry but what does that have to do with the fact that youre still stealing? Which btw is hurting the game developers you just mentioned? Its them who get laid off to compensate but its not their fault youre stealing the games they make ... Sorry bud but however you try and twist it the fact that YOU dont like COD games doesnt make you stealing them any better. Youre opinion of them being crapy doesnt mean its alright to steal it, infact if you think their crappy WHY do you even want to play them?!?!?!
@penpusher Thanks for trying but some one just reminded me that "pirating" isn't harming bobby CEO of activision but rather the game developers who are regular people like us. It's not their fault that their seniors are persuading them to create crappy COD games.
@TonnFool23 thanks I worked long and hard on that analogy! And no you see the devs of COD arent the robbers, thats precisely what you are. Plenty of people think the games worth the money (hence they're made) but if you dont why would you even want to know? :S I'm sorry but just because you dont like the game doesnt justify you stealing it ... What ever game you steal all you do is add to publishers resolve to stop pirating which means the rest of us typically have to deal with more and more DRM because of people like you with rather twisted and immature logic (if logic is infact the word)
@LeoLex_ what i dont like is people who expect everything to be flawless...expect there to be bugs, especially with sandbox games, and a game that has a new engine. Sure they test their game out but they cant find everything imaginable. I dunno what system you play on, but if you play it on PC/steam, then the game is patched relatively quickly. Consoles though its a different story and im sure the console release will have its fair share of issues, and the game will prolly put a huge strain on the consoles, they are gettin rather old.
Really hope they don't do some nonsensical armor pack-ish DLCs. I would love to have the "expansion" treatment like Morrowind and The Shivering Isles. Content that expands not only the story, but the land itself. If anyone is as excited like me about this game, by the time this DLC comes around, all of Skyrim, will have been plundered. Make it, I will pay and enjoy, just don't get greedy.
@fightingfish18 I agree but what I am trying to say is that I wouldn't want more than one expantion pack if it was $30. We have already payed $60 for it, even two expantion packs would bring the price up to $120. I am not in favor for paying that much for any video game.
@warhawk-geeby Yeah well said mate, I wasn't thinking of the developers who created the game. I was thinking of their a$$hole ceo.
@penpusher The raisins analogy is sweet mate :) But that's not what i'm referring to. You are talking about any other game but i'm not, what i'm talking about is CALL OF DUTY. I'm not waiting for that game to become cheaper which happens in 3 years, when i'm only going to play the campaign for 3 hours and 0 multiplayer. That game used to be worth every cent from COD 1 to COD 4, now those guys are just robbers they don't care about the game it's the money. Look at battlefield for example they care about the game, and they made a great game out of it.
@TonnFool23 no I still dont get the logic youre using, , ,youre justifying stealing it based on not liking some of it, i mean would that logic work if you saw a muffin with rasins in a shop but decided you dont like the rasins? It doesnt justify nicking stuff, stealings stealing, god just wait till its in the classics range or a bargain bin if you think only part of its worth it ... Why cant you people just wait? You cant need it that badly surely.
@TonnFool23 I'm not a major fan of the COD games actually, so no it doesn't 'hurt' me as you put it. It just annoys me that you pirate games, because you're doing no favours what so ever to the gaming community. Regardless of how terrible the multiplayer is, and regardless of the fact all Call of Dutys nowadays are pretty much the same.. the developers are still entitled to their money. It all boils down to men and women making a living, and folks like you aren't helping. I know your just one person, but if everyone had your mindset then gaming as a whole would generally be screwed. If you work for a living then you should have enough money buy the games, but if you think they're not worth the money then don't get them. Easy peasy.
@penpusher Well I told you, I've only pirated games like Modern warfare 2 and black ops. The reason why I pirated them it's because the campaign is the only decent thing in the game, 4-6 hours and terrible multiplayer. I've been fan of call of duty since the first one till cod 4 and i've bought all of them for the PC. It only takes less than 5 hours to complete the new cod campaign so yeah I hope you get me.
@TonnFool23 erm actually DRM is on more than just assassins creed 2 pc ... Its been going years and is a right pain in the backside, plus is isnt the effort to get around it that I have a problem with (thats easy), its the fact that people think they can just take a game without paying for it ... besides if you dont think a games worth buying why would you bother stealing it and then waste your time playing it?
@LeoLex Fallout NV wasn't made by Bethesda, it was made by Obsidian Entertainment. Bethesda made Fallout 3 and all the Elder Scrolls and they were all fantastic and won multiple awards including game of the year.
Too be fair i cant really see this game putting a foot wrong on any level, not with Oblivion being the best game i played in the last ten years, i truly can not wait for this masterpiece. My main concern being the faults that plagued Fallout NV on release, but surely Bethesda cant do that to us, not with a gaming event as huge as this. Bethesda please dont f*** this up, you get that right and you will have the best game ever made EVER!!
@penpusher haha well it was just a thought guess you dont like that idea, i guess your right there is only so far you can go with mmo's, i still think it could be interesting though.
@warhawk-geeby Who's complaining of games not coming to their platforms? I have all platforms, i barely play all 3. Does it hurt you that people pirate call of duty? I can understand why people would dislike others for pirating games like Elder Scrolls, Fallout etc, but for Call of duty. I think not.
@penpusher DRM only happens for Assassins Creed for PC, but I only have assassins creed on console. It's understandable why people pirate CALL OF DUTY, even it does get DRM why would any would even buy that game... If it does get DRM it would take at least 1 week to crack it so don't worry about it.
DLC might work for those no-brainer shooters but we demand the return of expansions. Modders will demolish every bit of DLC. In order to "compete" with them, Bethesda has to create expansions.
I like the sound of that. Hopefully they stick with and follow through with this philosophy. Can't wait for the game!
More substance and fewer expansions is a great idea, but I can't help but be discouraged by the talks of expansions packs so early in development as this all should be in the full game from the start. Nickel and diming people that buy your product is shady business. Either way I will still buy it all.
All that means is 2 hour DLC's for $10 rather than 1 hour DLC's for $5! I would love to see The Witcher 2 expansion come out on November 11th and has 40 hours of gameplay for $25, so people can choose which they want, or buy The Witcher 2 expansion and then get Skyrim when it's being sold cheaper! that would send a good message to RPG developers in the U.S to make better cRPG's!
Definitely down for some of that sweet expansion style dlc. But if they do decide to drop a little in between...Online Arena. Not the whole game, just in an arena setting, you know. I don't want thirty people running in and out of MY cave while I'm trying to bust goblin skulls. But a nice quiet place where me and a friend or some brit at four am can cross blades and toss fireballs. Cause let's face it, no matter how "hard" the boss is supposed to be, if you build your character right you can kill him in easily. I can still remember swatting Mankar right back into his throne with my Dragonheart Blade...
