Singularity a PlayStation 4 game?

Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream registers "singularityps4.com" domain name potentially related to next-gen game and platform from Sony.

Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls developer Quantic Dream may be working on a PlayStation 4 game titled Singularity. As spotted by Superannuation in a new Kotaku feature, the Paris-based developer registered the domain singularityps4.com in November.

The singularityps4.com domain name matches up with previous Quantic Dream registrations, including those for heavyrainps3.com and beyondps3.com.

The domain name also suggests that Sony may elect to name its next-gen platform the PlayStation 4 instead of Orbis. Gamers may not need to wait long to find out, as Sony is expected to hold an Apple-style event at the end of March to officially unveil this new machine.

Additionally, Quantic Dream founder and president David Cage has ties to Singularity. The designer previously explained that Ray Kurzweil's novel The Singularity is Near was a major influence on the studio's "Kara" tech demo (below) from the 2012 Game Developers Conference.

It is improbable that Quantic Dream's Singularity will exist publicly as "Singularity," as it is also the name of Raven Software's 2010 shooter. In addition, Activision holds the trademark for Singularity.

A Quantic Dream representative was not immediately available to comment.

>_> Perhaps this is a possible sequel to the Singularity game that came out on the Xbox360, PS3, and PC, or an epic similar creation of Endgame: Singularity.... I'm hoping for the later.

ISNT THERE ALREADY A GAME CALLED SINGULARITY???? FAIL!

While I've not once thought (or hoped) that the next PlayStation would be called Orbis, at this point the PS4 in the domain COULD be as much of a place holder as Singularity is bound to be. Whatever this turns into, I hope it involves the world and concepts shown in the Kara tech demo. That's just too awesome.

Anyone notice in this demo video that "POS-S4" robot piece that puts the arm in place?  Seems like a little easteregg because it was so much more visible than all of the other arm parts.  I love these kinds of things.

Weird feeling, but I think Sony will deo better in the first few years of the PS4 than they did with the PS3.  Really excited to see what they bring to the table.

@BamaGoatt I think the simpler title would be more scientifically accurate:

Singularity: Beyond Heavy

Still need to get Heavy Rain. But it's good to know they are making PS4 games already at Quantic Dreams.

@DiamondDM13 Yeah, that's slightly crazy if it's true. I thought Quantic Dream just focused on one game at a time.

Making a game where you care about the characters and story is really, really not easy if you're intent on an FPS.

-EDIT-  The only exception I can think of is Deus Ex, but even that let you leave first person frequently for the majority of story/plot elements.

-EDIT #2-  I guess Half-Life 2 managed it as well...

Serpentes420
Serpentes420

@naryanrobinson Bioshock, Halo 4, Fallout 3 and I am sure I can think of others if I had more time.  FPS only describes the games perspective and what sort of "weaponry" you use.  FPS does not equal Call of Duty or other "modern FPS" genre games.  You can do alot with the first person perspective, just look at the Portal games or Elder Scrolls.

naryanrobinson
naryanrobinson

@Serpentes420 I'm talking first-person perspectives.  Not just shooters.

The only thing worth caring about in Fallout 3 was Dad, and he was absent for the majority of the first half, and dead for the second.  The rest of the characters just bumbled around walking into walls like defective robots.  The story was nothing above average.

Bioshock had Mark Ryan who you only meet once in the whole game, and that Irish guy who's arguably the most important character and whose name I can't even remember.  The story was weak.  It only had a premise and a conclusion.

Haven't played Halo 4, but from what I've heard your companion chick seems important and I guess the story is decent.  That's an exclusive though.

Metro 2033 was another I thought of, but I can't count that either since it's all from a book.

Fallout 3 and Skyrim are *packed* with meaningless choices which no one would care about at all if they thought it wouldn't affect their ability to get a new axe or something.

When I played Deus Ex I had to stop playing for two days while I decided whether or not I should kill the dude on the plane and hide my motives a little longer, or reveal myself now and kill Anna for the benefit of the NSF.

With Half-Life 2 people are going crazy to see what's going to happen to Eli, see if the Vortigaunts can pull something, or whether Dr. Kleiner is going to perfect some machine that will save the world, or if Alex and Gordon are ever going to kiss.

You just don't find that kind of emotional commitment in 99% of first-person perspective games.

Just my take.

nedrith

@naryanrobinson I wouldn't really say it's hard, It just requires that the game has a good story with strong emotions tied in.  It's just that a large number of FPS players are just more than happy to shoot things that they don't care much about why they are shooting things.

naryanrobinson
naryanrobinson

@nedrith I don't think that's really fair.

Just look at the number of players that go crazy about Half-Life 2 and Deus Ex.  The market is definitely there for people who want to make that sort of game, and if a dev decides to go for a brain-dead run-and-gun shooter, the market is being eaten up by COD, a game that sells more in a year than most entire genres.

In short, if people have the imagination and the story and the characters, and they want to make an FPS game, there's lots of money to be made... and yet, where are they all?

Just think about the number of games with memorable characters and stories and count how many of them are first-person as opposed to third-person.

"The domain name also suggests that Sony may elect to name its next-gen platform the PlayStation 4 instead of Orbis."

Those are in house code names they barely ever use them at the end.

Think of it as counter intelligence if you like, now think with logic, when would Sony ever drop a name like PlayStation?

@Kane04 its obvious that Orbis was the code name. same as how Xenon was the Xbox 360

The Raven Software developed FPS "Singularity" is ironically one of my all time favorite games. It's in my Top 10 of All Time for sure, and in my Top 3 FPS's Ever Made easily. May even be #1. That game just knocked my socks off. It combined the best parts of Bioshock and Half Life into one hell of an adventure. I just can't decide what should be my #1 FPS ever. Metro 2033, or Singularity.

Both of them have competed against over 20 years of FPS's and won.

@EKGProd Singularity is so criminaly underrated that it pisses me off! It is one of my favorite games alongside with Metro 2033 and the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.
I guess we can blame Activision of it's failure, because it's easier to promote the crap of an old franchise than to give hope to a new IP.

@EKGProd Yeah Singularity was a really awesome game, as was Metro 2033! Can't wait for Last Light to release, especially since its probably the last one :(
