SingStar get wireless mics, Pop Edition

Sony Europe announces new cable-free option for PlayStation 3 karaoke fans; mics releasing March 20 ahead of SingStar Pop Edition in April.

In the UK, SingStar has long been the benchmark for console-based karaoke games, spawning numerous sequels since it debuted on the PlayStation 2 back in 2004. Since then, a number of titles have given the series a run for its money, including Guitar Hero World Tour, Rock Band, and Microsoft's moderately well received Lips on Xbox 360, which added wireless microphones to the genre.

Playing catch-up, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced new wireless microphones for the series, which will be available from March 20. While the mics won't feature snappy LED lights (a la Lips), they will, according to an announcement, feature new voice control options, which will allow couch potatoes to use the microphone to "announce which track you want to sing next...and even shop and search through your SingStore Carousel using your voice." The microphones also offer improved audio quality and are compatible with the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2.

Coming later in April is a new instalment in the series for the PS3, SingStar Pop Edition, which follows in the footsteps of SingStar Vol. 3. The full track listing for SingStar Pop Edition is below.

Anyone else feel disgraced that Queen and Klaxons are being put in the 'Pop' category'?

More pissed they are releasing a Queen edition in March. I've already bought the 2 Queen packs online, will I get a refund on them?

Bah. Wireless mics are all well and good, but why won't they release these killer tracklist discs for the PS2? I'm sick of missing out, and I'm certainly not dishing out for a PS3...

The songs are expensive, i guess we have to bear in mind the work put in to put the lyrics on-screen and the royalties that have to be paid out, i did hear they were looking into making the songs usable on portable devices too, whether that meant PSP or on "popular" MP3/MP4 players i don't know... What i find funny is you'll always seem to find 5 or 6 songs on a disc that you like, thus making you give in and buy it for the missus/kids that bit easier !! When's the Singstar mike stand coming out?? lol.

What will they think of next.... ...The dreaded 'WHAM' only edition, or even worse, "Weird Al Yankovich, unplugged!" Never underestimate the ability of salespeople to try and sell anything they can think of. I bought SS for my wife and 7 y.o. daughter - they love it, I just leave the room. But has anyone else noticed that the songs are actually more expensive than they are on iTunes and you can't export them to a portable player? Kind of pricey for stand-alone karakoe entertainment (if you can call it that) considering each disc only has a couple of dozen songs on them.
