Microsoft has today announced its newest SideWinder PC gaming peripheral, the SideWinder X8 Mouse. The SideWinder X8 looks similar to the other SideWinder mice, but it comes with several new features including 2.4GHz wireless connectivity and Microsoft's new BlueTrack technology that allows the mouse to work on more surfaces than regular optical and laser mice.

The mouse itself shares the same shape as the previous SideWinder mice, but it has a few external changes. The scroll wheel can now register left and right tilts and the side buttons have changed from round nubbins to indented panels for better thumb placement. The macro-record and Windows Games Explorer quick launch button round out the rest of the mouse's clickable options.

The SideWinder X8 also includes two sets of removable feet (three if you count the set that comes on the mouse), and the storage case for the feet doubles as an anchor for the mouse powercord. The X8 doesn't have a removable weight set, but there's no lack of heft due to the battery and wireless technology.

The mouse can provide 30 hours of gaming on a single charge, and it also comes with a power cord that you can use to charge the mouse while playing. The cord stays in place with a neat little magnetic socket.

The BlueTrack optical system can process 13,000 frames per second and you can quickly click to cycle the DPI from 250 all the way up to 4000. The original SideWinder has a 2000 DPI maximum resolution in comparison. Microsoft's Bill Jukes tells us that the X8's new tracking system will work on just about every surface except for glass.
The bad news is that the SideWinder X8 will carry the $99 price tag because it's Microsoft's new flagship gaming mouse, and, hey, it has wireless and BlueTrack. We'll also have to wait a while before we get one.The X8 won't be available until February 2009. Yeah, that's almost 6 months from now.
Razer still has the gaming mouses.
Too expensive
lol
It is CooI But I Love My Razer DeathAdder I Wont Get This.
No leftie support, no sale.
I love my Razer Lachesis no way ill get this!!
wow thats so cool 3O HOURS?!!!!!!
omg if this had a micro gear like the g9 and mx revolution id buy it hands down ^_^ this because i can assign a weapon to the scroll mouse and turn a g3 or piston in cod 4 into a machine gun =P
Will it come with a copy of Gears Of War 2 as the previous one did? :)
Love my current sidewinder, and will buy this one and make love to it. Hope the wireless is accurate, and for all of you who say it looks cheap and flimsy- I drop and abuse my current sidewinder to no end, and it never skips a beat. So, I'm sure the new one will be durable as well.
@Spike1988 who cares how it looks as long as it works/feels nice. anyway, who the f*** wants a cordless gaming mouse to people talking about the cost of the mouse, they are trying to target pro/semi pro gamers. Ive put a ton of money in to sound/a mouse, and it gets me a +40kill lead in pub CoD4 servers. imo im not sure why'd any 1 get any thing other than a razor mouse for gaming. Ive used many of logitechs, Microsoft, OCZ etc, and razor has always been the best. gogo deathadder imo
What an ugly, crap looking mouse. I wouldn't trade my Razer Lachesis in for anything. Wireless mice = fat, lame, and not as responsive.
Wow that looks so nice! I don't have the money though. =(
I own the sidewinder version below this, and id have to say ive got mixed feelings of how it feel/performs compared to my Logitech G5. This newer one on the other hand looks very cool! its more streamlined and that magnetic charging cord is very very appealing. I would definately buy this mouse if it was cheaper xD
nice preview. too bad it won't be out till after christmas.
Looks great, but man, we're gonna have to wait a while. Darn it.
Too expensive for me!
The left handed mouse user is never thought of. Logitech has a couple RH mice that are half-way decent for LH users but these Sidewinders 10-fold worse! I'd pay a premium for a good LH mouse.
are there any rebates?
Functionality seems to be improved but build quality does not satisfy me ... it could have been stronger and durable !!!
nice im thinking of buying it
Numba FOUR! (like you couldn't tell? Look, idiot) At $99, just for a mouse, you'd better hope that you'll get your money's worth from it.
Third, and I dig the mouse. I loved the feel of the orignial Sidewinder.
second
Oh yeah, first post!!!
