Sid Meier's latest PC strategy sim headlines a relatively light week, as Final Fantasy XIV Online early access opens and F1 2010 peels out.
It's unlikely that any new release will be able to match last week's top earner, Halo: Reach, which earned Microsoft an eyebrow-raising $200 million within 24 hours of release. Of course, that's hardly going to stop any of this week's contenders from trying.
For many PC gamers, the headliner for this week will be Sid Meier's Civilization V, from Take-Two's recently trimmed strategy studio Firaxis. Built on an all-new engine, Civ V updates the series with a hexagonal playfield grid. Firaxis has also overhauled the game's combat system and introduced ranged bombardment options, animated world leaders who speak in their own languages, and a built-in community hub, allowing players to swap scenarios and other content without leaving the game.
PC gamers who don't mind spending extra cash for early access to a game can also pick up the Collector's Edition of Final Fantasy XIV this week. Priced at $75, the Collector's Edition grants purchasers an eight-day jump over standard-edition buyers. Other perks include a behind-the-scenes DVD, a travel journal featuring concept art from the game, and a "right of passage" certificate.
Final Fantasy XIV Online will be set in the realm of Eorzea, a world not seen before in any other installments in the franchise. Like in other massively multiplayer online role-playing games, players will be able to explore the realm after selecting from a variety of races, combat classes, and professional skills. More information on Eorzea's lore and backstory can be found on the game's Web site.
The week will also see Codemasters' first effort in the F1 racing circuit on high-definition consoles take to the track. Slated to arrive for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, F1 2010 features all the drivers, teams, cars, and tracks from the 2010 Formula One season. Gamers can also expect to see damage modeling, dynamic weather systems, and online multiplayer options, in addition to a host of single-player career, time trial, championship, and grand prix modes.
The remainder of the week brings a hodgepodge of other new releases. Atlus will roll out its latest hardcore RPG Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City for the DS, while Konami serves up Gormiti: The Lords of Nature on both of Nintendo's platforms. Kalypso's latest government and city-building sim Patrician IV also arrives for the PC.
For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

i know this isnt the place, but i am glad that grand theft dog is permanently banned from gamespot. all those who thumbed down his remarks, you should have checked out his forum post. i think someone missed out on some hugs growing up.
@Geulogon_baat CIV V is released on the 24th in Europe and possibly also in the rest of the non-US world. I guess it has to do with logistics for the physical boxes. Annoys me a lot, but I have the game preloaded and I am ready to launch on Friday.
@inaka_rob nothing comes close to pokemon when it comes to "milkng the cash cow" at least in america, not japan :P (Rockman.exe and starforce for example are milked way more than over here (sadly :( ) @Gladestone1 whoops wrong comment sorry about the thumbs down On the topic of the post SA2 is on XBLA too you know >.>
GrandTheftDog wrote: All pc has left is milked franchises. Civ 5??? Lol... while you pc gamers will be playing your Milked franchise (Civ 17) i will be playing Call Of Duty Black ops Thumb me down but you know its true. True what that a franchise has turned into madden..With out you fools realising this..All cod now is just new maps and nothing new..Rehashed how many cod is there now..Like one every six months..Your the guy that keeps this franchise going just like you halo freaks..Let them ips die..Give them companies a chance to come out with some thing new..If you guys stop buying the same crap maybe they will..Same can be told about me with madden..Its the same game every year.. Dont talk about civ 5 like your justified or some thing..At least we have to wait every 4 to 5 years for a new game..This game looks amazing to..Just because its a strategy game doesnt mean its not going to sell..Civ franchise has been selling for 20 years..Id like to see your cod franchise go this distance..We have only had 5 versions of civ..How many in 5 years of cod have there been..Seven maybe give me a break..Next time you leave a blog think about what your saying..
@GrandTheftDog You're just an annoying little troll aren't you? I highly suspect that all your rants are based on frustration at not being smart enough to play a complex and absorbing strategy game like Civ V. Is that it, do you get overwhelmed when faced with something more challenging than shooting while running?
oops, i forgot that f1 and darksiders are also coming out! which means i have to get 3 games at release lol but my first priority is civ 5 then f1 :)
Finally, a new F1 game on the PC! :D And Civ V of course. I'll probably get those two sooner or later.
Civ V? Yes, please. Now LEAVE ME ALONE while I conquer those barbarians on that island that is 2 hexagons big.
@GrandTheftDog, "All pc has left is milked franchises. Civ 5??? Lol... while you pc gamers will be playing your Milked franchise (Civ 17) i will be playing Call Of Duty Black ops Thumb me down but you know its true" Black Ops is on PC too you know. PC gamers can be ignorant and at hear I'm a console gamer, but you sir are simply not very intelligent. Civ 5 is a 5th game, Black Ops is what 7? Or is it 8? - Justin
@Zloth2 It makes sense for Civilization V to be on the cover of PC Gamer because it is a PC game and PC Gamer is geared towards PC games. It would be much more significant if Civilization was on the cover of a more generalized/more popular video game magazine like Game Informer or Gamepro. The fact remains is that games like Civilization V (as good as it is) appeal to a niche market that will likely barely make it to 300 thousand, let alone a million. Gaming is (unfortunately) focused on consoles and first and third person shooters. So a great game like Civilization V is going to be ignored by the masses (of hardcore gamers).
@ metalkid9 yeah... I kind of want to thumbs up and down you. Its is kinda funny that he is calling CIV 5 a milked franchise. All the sequels are far separated much improved welcomes editions to the franchise. Call of Duty. Is he kidding? what a F`ing joke? COD may the single most milked franchise in the histroy of games (Tony Hawk comes to mind too) COD!?!?!?!? but PC games are hanging on by a thread. If it wasnt for WoW, Stracraft, and Diablo 3, and a handfull of other FRANCHISES PC games would be all but gone by now. CIV 5 is going to be sweet though.
@GrandTheftDog, "All pc has left is milked franchises. Civ 5??? Lol... while you pc gamers will be playing your Milked franchise (Civ 17) i will be playing Call Of Duty Black ops Thumb me down but you know its true." wow! You're calling CivV milked when it's released every what, every FIVE YEARS! and you'll be a playing the 17th COD ever made, a non-milked franchise which is released every single year. The irony in that statement is mind blowing.
A cod bot? that's about as likely as a Halo bot! Both games are milked, and the players keep buying those crap games. ODST, $50? Worth $20 for 5 hours of gameplay. Halo Wars ... horrible. The only reason they charge so much for these games is because people will pay it no matter what. I'm not even gonna get started on Blizzard and the $180 sc2 game. Civ 5 is $50, instead of $60, they know this is a recession. They actually care about their customers, I will be buying this game and supporting them, unless they turn into another activision/blizzard.
Oh I forgot the RDR DLC as well. Come one gamespot, you post a COD DLC on new releases and not RDR DLCs? Either you got paid from Activision or you're all fanboys.
F1 2010 - Can't wait. Finally a racing game that isn't just another car collecting mini-race compilation...
The games that worth for me: F1 2010 Etrian Odyssey III Patrician IV and of course, Sid Meier's Civilization V
@GrandTheftDog Way to troll. PS Nostalgic about a game that came out last year? Epic nostalgia. Being nostalgic about today's breakfast too? :P
Civilization V and F1 for me. I didn't realize that releasing five games over a span of more than 20 years constituted "milking." Hell, there have been seven CoD games in seven years.
ill look unto this, maybe ill rent it to check it out and end up buying it By the way, Pokemon Black and white came out in japan a few days ago im suprised you didnt make note of that, they better be in japans charts considering there were over a thousand pre-orders
@GrandTheftDog You might want to get out more, seriously. CoD (MW2 included) is so played out. The shooter genre in general is extremely boring. Every now and then something good comes out that adds a much needed change to the genre, like Borderlands. So go ahead and play your stupid Black Ops, keep encouraging Activision to keep pumping out the same crappy shooter games over and over. Let's see how you enjoy it when activision is charging you real money per game bullet fired because it "adds to the realism."
Theres a difference. In modern warfare 2 you feel excitment running towards that destroy point in SnD. It feels good dodging bullets. It feels good sniping people in a hiding spot. To unleash that nuke it almost brings a tear to your heart while the star spangled banner plays with jets in the air... It is a wonderful, wonderful game. Many good memories. Very nostalgic
@grandtheftdog because sid didn't release a civilization game every year instead added a new installment in the series every 4 to 5 years. so it's given those developers plenty of time (which they do truly use wisely) to craft a game that's not going to be same as the last installment and I play the series (started with civ 3) and they all are always an amazing game to play. unlike call of duty which uses the same game engine and graphics, but different time setting.
Yes, because Call of Duty isn't a milked out franchise at all. There's 5 civilization games because they're good. I'm preparing to loose at least a couple of weeks to this installment. It's a good thing it wont hit the shelves here until friday, at least gives me a a weekend to play it to death and get back from zombie state before I have to go back to uni...
@ GrandTheftDog... oh and COD Black Ops isn't a milked franchise??? Of course it is! And yes it is fun! So what makes u think that civ 5 (a milked franchise like blackops) wont be good??? exactly.
Come on... Civilization FIVE. Seriously theres a 5th one? Why are people cheering this one. You dont see excitment for guitar hero warriors of rock? God sid meier must be a hypnotist.
All pc has left is milked franchises. Civ 5??? Lol... while you pc gamers will be playing your Milked franchise (Civ 17) i will be playing Call Of Duty Black ops Thumb me down but you know its true.
