PS3 compilation of Kratos' PSP exploits joined in stores by NHL 12 and Twisted Pixel's Gunstringer; downloadable debuts topped by free Red Dead Redemption add-on.
With Resistance 3, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine, Driver: San Francisco, Dead Island, and Star Fox 3DS, the first full week of September was chock-full of high-profile new releases. The second week lets up ever so slightly, with a new PlayStation 3 compilation of Kratos' portable conquests leading a slate featuring EA Sports' annual hockey sim, Twisted Pixel's first Kinect game, and a free downloadable add-on to last year's smash hit Red Dead Redemption.
The God of War: Origins Collection brings together the two PSP installments in Sony's popular god-slaughtering action series: 2008's God of War: Chains of Olympus and 2010's God of War: Ghost of Sparta. Both games will be remastered in high definition with support for 3D displays, as well as PlayStation Network trophies.
While NHL preseason games don't start until September 19, this week's release of EA Sports' annual puck sim will signal a welcome end to a tragedy-filled offseason. Putting the focus back on the ice, EA Sports has updated this year's version of the series with a new "Full Contact" physics engine. The publisher aims to increase realism in the game, adding in such features as goalies that can be interfered with more realistically, as well as net battles. It has also revamped the Be a Pro career mode and added a handful of legends to the game, including Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Gordie Howe.
The launch of Twisted Pixel's Gunstringer marks a pair of firsts for the developer. The Western-themed marionette-based shooter is both the first Kinect game from the studio, as well as its first retail offering. The Gunstringer will sell for $40 in stores and will be bundled with a voucher code to download Halfbrick's slice-'em-up Fruit Ninja Kinect. The Halfbrick-developed produce-slicing game saw a stand-alone Xbox Live Arcade launch August 10 and sells for $10 separately.
Red Dead Redemption gets a posse of new multiplayer characters this week with the free Myths and Mavericks Bonus Pack. The eight new characters are pulled from the original game's single-player mode and highlighted by aging gunslinger Landon Ricketts. The rest of the new additions include Vicente DeSanta, Drew MacFarlane, Deputy Eli, Deputy Jonah, Javier Esquella, Nastas, and Uncle. The add-on also includes 11 new locations for multiplayer matches.
For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

A relatively light week after the monster week last week. I guess a small respite for cash strapped gamers.
God of war games are great. This is a must buy for all PS3 owners. One thing I don't get is why make such successful franchise exclusively for one console (and this is not the only title that has that restriction). Everyone should be given a chance to play GOW.
i am not offending Kratos in any way, I totally love him.... he is a great bada%$@ and let me tell you, God of War games are one of my all time favorites. and.... i am not bashing NO other games... i love ALL games..
i love that it is coming in PS3 now because I have God of War I & II in High Definition and I got God of War III.. Now I cant wait to get God of War Originals. I don't want you guys to get me wrong on this but there is 1 thing that i dislike though and it isnt the games themseelves, it is the rapidly buttons pressing... Like, the circle button and the L1 and R1 buttons.... Could anyone tell me how to reduce the difficulty on that or you cant...
Would love to get GOW: Origins but I'ma wait on it. Also, had no clue they were releasing a White Chronicles II LOL But yeah, I'm saving my dough for October and November: Arkham City, Uncharted 3, and Revelations are my top 3 priorities gaming wise right now. Will have to cop the rest later cause I can't empty out my pockets before Christmas LOL
Hard reset looks interesting, but in general I'm somewhat appreciative of the lull in releases right now. Gives us a chance to save for the onslaught scheduled in the coming months. The more I hear about Skyrim, the more I'm certain it's something I'm not going to be able to skip.
good shout-out for the deaths in the NHL, nice show, Brendan! That really is a unfortunate and I doubt we'll hear the end of the cause from the NHL.
God of War Origins is a must buy for me. Love the PSP but God of War games should have the Dual Analog controls. PS3 now has all of Krato's adventures. All 5 God of War games can now be played in order on the PS3. I might have to try that.
After God of War 3, it's hard to go back and play any other version. That game was so good looking it just spoils you.
I played both games on the PSP and I played the PS3 demo of GoW Origins, I am definitely getting this game.
I really wish Bit.Trip.Saga didn't have to be on 3DS. I would gladly play that on DS. And even though a 360 or PS3 version is unlikely it would be nice as a downloadable title on those platforms.
I'm getting Dead Island this week, I didn't grab it last week because the reviews made me think twice but now that I've seen a little of a Let's Play on Youtube I think I'd like it..... Character voices could have been better but if the game is tense and enjoyable/rewarding I'm in.
Still no word on the Portal 2 dlc I guess. It's supposed to come before the end of summer which is the 21st I think and last I heard they were still on track
Oops. Hard Reset added. Will have to figure out how/why it didn't make it in there originally. Current hypothesis: Human error.
At first I was a little bit skeptical but now I'm really starting to enjoy these collections/compilations.
I'll be picking GOW OC sometime in the future since I've never played GoS. I liked CoO but never bothered with GoS because it's a game that belongs to consoles, not portable with a small screen.
GOW i never played but i'ma wait for all 5 games on one disc before I get to know Kratos lol. WKC 2, I'll pass played 1st got bored after repeatable gameplay. even after beating game twice and reborn 4 times, i simply just lost interest.
@fester420 Interesting link & yea I have no doubt it would look better in 3D but seriously how many people have 3D TV's? Bugger all. They put in a lot of work to upgrade from PSP sure but the fact remains the graphics look awful compared to most other games, they would've been better off putting all that time & effort into a new GOW game thats actually designed specifically for the PS3. Even though I thought the demo looked bad it was still fun to play. If it costs $40 where I live then I'd probably get it for gameplay alone, but I have no doubt here in New Zealand its gonna cost at least $80 (most new games are around $100-$120 here) which I don't think its worth.
@187umKILLAH http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/08/12/herculean-task-remastering-god-of-war-origins-collection-for-ps3/ I think they did an excellent job of porting a game that was originally 480 x 272. The 3D is excellent as well. Graphics aren't the first thing I look for in a game anyway. They are both excellent games and basically 20 bucks a piece.
@kris9031998 I think you mean why wasn't red orchestra 2 discussed in the article. I was a bit perplexed on that as well. At least it got a little attention down there with Nicktoons MLB... :(
How is Red orchestra not mentioned? (i know its in the list, but that and hard reset are pretty big releases this week)
GOW Origins demo is available on PSN and I must say after playing GOW3 (easily the best looking game on PS3) then going to this demo I won't be picking up this new game unless its very cheap. The graphics are abismal, I understand its a port from the PSP but its no excuse for such awful graphics in this day and age. Sure gameplay is fun & graphics don't make the game but you can't just ignore the fact your basically playing PSOne standard graphics. *If you give me thumbs down you obviously haven't played this new demo or don't mind paying for a new game with graphics that look over a decade old.
I'm unfamiliar with most of the games that are being released on September. I guess everyone is going to go nuts about October. I think there's a game for everyone that month. I'm saving my money for Dark Souls, I hope everyone enjoy's the game their waiting for this fall and winter (:
@Polybren - You missed Hard Reset. Released in just a couple of days. At least deserves a spot on the list if not its own paragraph...
Where is Hard Reset on the releases this week? Game releases in 2 days... Come on GS... have to do better on getting list correct.
I have no problems with gow but I am not confident about how well its gonna work on ps3. Ps2 to ps3 sort of makes sense but i am not sure about psp. I mean psp and ps3 theres hell of a difference.
It's a cool idea to move successful PSP games to PS3, I just wish they (Sony, developers) would do it more often.
