Valve's long-anticipated shooter compilation hits shelves alongside Puzzle Quest on XBL, Folklore on the PS3, the ceramic-white PSP Slim, and NeoGeo's debut on Nintendo's VC.
With the first episode debuting in June 2006 and the series initially slated to wrap by Christmas 2007, the continuation of Valve's acclaimed Half-Life 2 shooter has followed more of a traditional release schedule. However, Drano now seemingly applied in liberal quantities, Valve is finally flushing out the oft-delayed Episode Two this week on the Xbox 360 and PC as part of the Orange Box. (A PlayStation 3 version is currently slated to follow later this year.)
A five-game compilation pack, the Orange Box includes the original Half-Life 2, its first two episodes, as well as Team Fortress 2 and Portal. It is rated M for Mature. For fans who can't be bothered with all the pack-ins, Valve is also busting up the Orange Box into la carte offerings on its downloadable game service Steam.
Shoot-outs can also be had using soccer balls this week in EA's annual footballer FIFA 08 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, Wii, Nintendo DS, and PC. Sports fans who prefer to be the speeding bullet themselves can hop into Sega Rally Revo this week. The first iteration of the acclaimed racing series to hit consoles stateside since 1999's Sega Rally Championship 2, Rally Revo hits the gas on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PSP this week and the PC next week.
Not content to spread one version across several platforms, the Looney Tunes and Bleach cartoons each have a pair of games out this week. Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal is Warner Bros.' latest action adventure featuring the likes of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Foghorn Leghorn, and Marvin the Martian. Looney Tunes: Duck Amuck is a minigame compilation for the Nintendo DS that features the notoriously short-tempered Daffy Duck. Cartoon Network's Bleach series also gets two installments this week, Shattered Blade on the Wii and The Blade of Fate on the DS.
LucasArts' Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron touches down on the PSP this week. Those feeling the Force can either pick up the game on its own for $39.99 or invest in Sony's limited-edition Star Wars Battlefront pack, which includes a ceramic-white PSP Slim with a silk-screened image of Darth Vader on the back and a copy of Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, for $199.99. A revamp of the classic PlayStation strategy game, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions also wages tactical war on the PSP this week. Rounding out Sony's platform-exclusive offerings for the week, Folklore spins its fantasy action adventure tale on the PS3.
While Sony is still mum on what it has in store for the week, Microsoft and Nintendo are hitting the downloadable circuit hard this week. Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, D3's surprise handheld hit from earlier in the year, brings its jewels to Xbox Live this week for 1,200 Microsoft points ($14.99). On the shameless advertisement front, the Toyota-sponsored Yaris also scoots onto XBL this week at the low, low price of free. SNK Playmore raises its dukes for the first time on Nintendo's Virtual Console this week with a trio of its bread-and-butter fighters from the NeoGeo days--Fatal Fury, World Heroes, and Art of Fighting--for 900 Wii points ($9) apiece.

man we need a flippin counter strike for 360....the one on xbox was kinda crappy but with next gen stuff it will be the s h i t
"gcarlisl: Sorry, I have an AXE to grind with Valve. They need to charge $60.00 and deliver at least 16+ hours of gameplay for each episode. Having me repurchase these games 2 and 3 times over is insulting. Honestly, Valve is going to blow this because their spending too much time on B.S. games like portal and TF. Focus on core competencies stop trying to appeal to masses." Doesn't HALO 3 lasts only 5-6 hours? BTW, The Orange Box has 5 games: 2 old (Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 Episode One) and 3 new (Half-Life 2 Episode Two, Team Fortress 2, Portal). If you can't call that a bargain (5 games for $40-$50), I don't know what's a bargain for you.
oh and btw by father of class based shooters i am of course talking about the quake mod played by HARD CORE GAMERS!!!!!, but i guess you (and by you i mean gcarlisl) can't handle that hard core of a game... go back to talking to 3 year olds on Halo 3....
um gcarlisl sorry to burst your bubble but the sequel to the father of all class-based shooters is not only worth $60 on its own but is also LONG over due, so ya. and u know u can (if game bought on steam) give away your steam key's or sell your retail key's (technically not allowed) for the two games to friends.... plus think long and hard for another company that is this nice when it comes to bundles.... ya thats what i thought....

Luieburger, I appreciate your comments. I will hold my comments on Portal. TF is what it is. I was at Walmart tonight and the Orange Box isn't even available at the store. It's only available at Wal-mart Online. This is going to do gangbuster numbers I can see it already.
@gcarlisl Team Fortress 2 alone is worth the $45 I paid for the whole orange box. I expected to be paying $45 for the "Black Box" (just EP2, TF2, and Portal) but they decided to give me a copy of HL2 and EP1 to give to friends. Also I've been able to enjoy the TF2 beta. If you want to pay $30 for EP2 alone then be my guest. I won't hold anything against you. It's not my money to spend. Just don't go around saying that TF2 and Portal are crap when you haven't played them.
Did you know that Best Buy is offering HL2 for $19.95 and HL2 Episode 1 for $9.99? Steam is a rip-off!! Steam is still selling HL@ for $29.99 and HL2EP1 for $19.95.
the_real_VIP "Orange Box for PC! (keyboard & mouse & free online FTW!)" The PC version is also cheaper (49.99), great!!! not that I don't like the 360, I just don't own one.
qiwihead, Do you know what markup is in business? That's where they "tell you" it costs $60.00 and charge you $45.00. The actual cost are probably like $25.00. I love gaming but I love my cash more. In 30 days all of you gamers will be selling your "Orange Boxes" on Ebay to buy the next "hot" game.
Qwikhead, Thanks for enlightened comments. "Since half-life 2 episode was too short to be released as a stand alone game!" Hey Genius, I bought HL2: EP1 as a standalone. I paid $19.95 or something for it. It came in a cool little box. I hoping to do it that again. I know all of you are in the Valve moment and that's cool but remember...we have a ton of quality games coming out this fall...don't waste your time on the "extras"...just eat the meat! Halo 3, HL2EP2, UT3, and MGS4. I'm a hard core gamer...screw the crossover games!
I'm still confused about the Orange box. What's show up exactly at the stores? Can you buy just episode 2 or is that just available on Steam? I'm not interested in those other worthless games. I just want Episode 2
Pmatt you should download the demo of folklore or read the review the sixaxis in it is great in it. o yeah and revo sux
I just took a quick look at all the post and nobody seems to care about Bleach! LoL!!! I wonder if it is even gonna be sold in Europe. I'll only get coz i'm a fan, otherwise instead of Fifa 08 i'm waiting for PES 2008! I might try out the OB as well; the trailers have really been enticing!
Once again, 360 owners get an embarassment of riches in the shooter department. If you like shooters and you don't have a 360, you are nuts!
Definitely getting FIFA, The Orange Box and Puzzle Quest on Xbox 360. I'll be grabbing Folklore as well when I purchase PS3 down the road.
Orange Box (thumbs up) Sega Rally Revo (up) FIFA 08 (way down, I look down on it) ---> go WInning Eleven! Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal (HAHAHAHAHA)
where do you buy NWN Mask of the Betrayer in Canada? Other than Amazon.ca I can't wait to get it, and no one sells it.
