Latest in storied series with 3D graphics hits this week next to Ninja Theory’s action adventure game, Nintendo's minigame collection, and NBA 2K11.
Last week’s new release slate was spearheaded by zombies and soccer, but this week’s focus is vampires and basketball.
Leading the pack this week is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. First teased in March 2008 and formally announced during the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, the game drops this week for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Madrid, Spain-based Mercury Steam led development, with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and his Kojima Productions studio serving as support.
As for the game, Lords of Shadow is set in the year 1047 and follows Gabriel Belmont, who is a member of the Brotherhood of Light. Gabriel's quest involves roaming the land in pursuit of pieces of an artifact that can bring the dead back to life, in the process battling nefarious underworld creatures and other mythical monsters and beasts.
Also dropping this week is Visual Concept’s NBA 2K11 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PSP, and Wii. Legendary hall of famer Michael Jordan graces the title’s cover and is featured in the game as a playable character. Further, the game embraces Jordan more fully by including a handful of Jordan Challenges, including “The Flu Game.” In this 1997 NBA Final game, Jordan was violently ill and still managed to tally 39 points in a win. Players will have to match that feat to unlock additional goods.
Though NBA Elite 11 has been indefinitely postponed, EA Sports will still be slamming the hardwood with NBA Jam. The arcade basketball title is due out exclusively on the Wii this week, and the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are due out “by the holidays.” The game is a revival of the well-regarded 1993 arcade game of the same name and has been updated with new visuals and gameplay changes. The title sports two distinct modes: classic and remix tour, where gamers can play either in a traditional manner or with an array of new power-ups and battles, respectively.
Ninja Theory’s Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is due out this week on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Set in a postapocalyptic America, the game tells the story of slaves forced to work together for survival. The game's protagonist, the muscular Monkey, is captured by slavers along with the techno-savvy woman Trip. The pair escape, but Trip hacks a slave headband to tie her life to Monkey's, forcing him to protect her as they search for refuge.
On the portable game front, Square Enix this week is releasing Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light. The publisher is calling the title a "back to basics" installment in the storied series, and it will afford gamers more than a single-player adventure.
Four-player co-op has been promised for the title, which will be a turn-based role-playing game. It will feature a class system akin to Final Fantasy X-2, with players being able to switch their character's class by changing the hat the character is wearing, Square Enix said.
Also being released this week is the Wii exclusive Wii Party. Having debuted in Japan in early July, Wii Party marks Nintendo’s first stab at the party genre since 2007’s Mario Party 8. The title is composed of 13 distinct game modes and packs in over 70 minigames. Nintendo recently purchased a majority stake in the game’s developer, ND Cube, a team arguably most famous for the Gameboy Advance title F-Zero: Maximum Velocity.
Shifting to the music-game space, Konami is bringing Def Jam: Rapstar to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii this week. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game will come bundled with the game and a wired mic for $69.99, while the Wii package costs $59.99.
Def Jam Rapstar is the maiden effort from 4mm Games, a publishing and development label founded in part by two original leaders of Rockstar Games. Ghostbusters: The Video Game studio Terminal Reality, as well as Def Jam Interactive, contributed to the game, where aspiring emcees can sing along with 45 songs from artists like Kanye West, Nelly, and Notorious B.I.G. The game also features a Freestyle mode, in which gamers can drop their own rhymes over tracks laid down by a variety of hip-hop producers.
For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot’s New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

Honestly, Wii Party looks good, I am going to have to try it when the price goes down. *Gets marked down for liking a "casual" game* :P
Castlevania looks like a lot of fun. On my radar; definitely something I'll have to get into at some point.
Wait, two games with deep stories and characters in the one week? We usually don't get two in a month let alone a week! Gun.
@Fusco1980 Oh yeah man! Totally. Another reason why I nabbed the CE. The retro-Castlevania artwork cover is killer, the artbook, the soundtrack. I shouldn't be a sucker for that stuff, but on occasion, I think we all give into it.
I'm getting Castlevania day one and since I played the demo for enslave last week I'll wait for a sale on that game.
@Alucard_Prime You obviously have great taste in games! Your icon shows your a Mass Effect fan, and I'm still cheering for ME2 as Game of the Year! Yeah man, with all I need to get to this week, Tuesday and Wednesday are going to be "Don't call me, txt me, or bother me" days, because I'll be knee deep in the horrors of Castlevania. @Fusco1980 I think for us Castlevania fans, this game means a lot more to us than the average reviewer. Sure, we could be slightly biased, but walk on over to Metacritic. This game is met with high praise, and it's averaging several points higher than Enslaved, which I believe to be its competition on Tuesday. If it continues to carry an average score in the high 80s, that will put it with some of the best so far this year. Let's hope we feel the same way!
Critize Castlevania all u want for being a GOW clone...All games are clones of other games. That is a dumb reason to complain. Isnt COD Black ops a COD 1,2,3,4,5,6,clone. But i doubt the reviewer will knock off points. Come on its the genre. I know im getting it day 1.
The new Castlevania does look good. I may pick it up in a while. The rest of the games aren't too interesting.
@Egotte I couldn't agree with you more, and I took a day off from work to get the collector's edition on Tuesday lol. Finally, after all this wait, and only a few days away now.
most of those games are trash lol. I'll just skip October and wait till november when the sly collection and fist of the north star comes out.
@Fusco1980 Lately the two have been matching each other with identical scores over several different reviews, which I just find pretty amusing! With Castlevania, the length of the game, the seemingly strong story, the strong musical score, and the solid gameplay doesn't seem to warrant a 7.5 An 8.5 average score, after seeing multiple reviews at a 9 or higher... well, that's gotta say some pretty good things about it. I think it's time our reviewers grew up a little bit and stopped comparing every action game to God of War. Games like Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno, and the new Castlevania are simply the modern day action-platformer. To criticize the game because you have limited exploration kinda sucks. Since when did Kratos have the ability to go exploring ancient Greece like Ezio can Renaissance Italy? All things great borrow from other sources; we all should realize this and great games shouldn't be losing points every time for that reason. Sonic Racing was praised for how well it emulated Mario Kart! The entirety of World of Warcraft was based off of other franchises. Point is, it doesn't matter. At least with this game, Gabriel seems like a great protagonist. His last name is Belmont; give the man some freakin' love already! This game should be on my doorstop in the form of a Collector's Edition for XBOX 360 on Tuesday, and I can't wait.
Will definitely be picking up Castlevania eventually. Enslaved also looks like it would be a lot of fun.
You forget that Sega has announced that Sonic 4 Episode 1 is coming to the iPhone this Thursday, with console versions to follow next week on their respective days.
How come every post about anything wii gets negatives whilst every post about 360 gets a positive? I smell biased readers. @Pete5506 I can't blame you. I wanted NBA Jam for the Wii when it was Wii-Exclusive but once they announced it multiplat, the Wii version just kept getting screwed. Remix Tour or Online Play? I think the obvious choice is obvious.
Just casltevania fits my needs till god of war gos arrives hahaha damn right cool games gool games :9 but nice to seeother ones came too!!!
WOO been waiting for castlevania for a lonnngg time!!! i got my pre-order shirt too coming! cant wait!
