Shippin' Out Nov. 23-29: Chrono Trigger, Super Street Fighter II HD
Square Enix' SNES-to-DS remake joins revamp of Capcom's classic fighter on 360, PS3; Metal Gear Online expansion, Chronicles of Spellborn also launching.
In the United States, the last week of November is traditionally truncated by the Thanksgiving holiday, which takes place on Thursday. (Canadians have their own Thanksgiving in mid-October.) The following day is "Black Friday," the day on which thousands of US consumers trample each other to take advantage of deep holiday discounts at retailers. As such, most of the year's top-tier games shipped by last week to that ensure they would be place on store shelves in time for the deal-mad public's onslaught.
Stop stuffing that turkey and check out Thanksgiving week's new games!
That said, there are still several new releases of note this week. First and foremost is Chrono Trigger, the Nintendo DS remake of Square Enix' classic SNES role-playing game. Unlike the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest DS remakes, Chrono Trigger did not receive a graphical overhaul, though it has been reformatted to use the handheld's dual-screen presentation and touch-screen functionality. The remake includes a wireless play mode and an all-new dungeon, and has received a solid 8.5 in GameSpot's review.
Connected Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3s will also receive the elaborately titled Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix this week. Announced in April 2007--and originally set for release last holiday season--the remake of the classic arcade game retains the original's gameplay underneath all-new high-definition graphics.
The Wii will also be getting its own retro-fighting-game redux in the form of the compilation The King of Fighters Collection: The Orochi Saga. Also out this week is the Meme expansion to Metal Gear Online, which adds three new maps to the PS3-exclusive stealth-actioner Metal Gear Solid 4's online mode. Acclaim's massively multiplayer online role-playing game for the PC, The Chronicles of Spellborn, will launch on Thursday, two days after what might be the first (and last) biathlon game, Crave's Ski & Shoot.
