New release slate championed by Nintendo's new handheld and software for it; EA Sports' latest golf game, Shift 2: Unleashed, WWE All Stars, Dynasty Warriors 7 also out.
It's a bustling week at retail this week, but one product screams louder than the rest.
Today, Nintendo released the 3DS, its latest portable in the DS family. The system is already available in Japan and the United Kingdom and sells for $250 in North America. Gamers can choose from two color options: cosmic black or aqua blue.
In addition to the system, a slew of new 3DS titles make their debut this week. Gamers looking to take their 3D gaming on the go can grab Pilotwings Resort, Super Street Fight IV: 3D Edition, Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, Super Monkey Ball 3D, Steel Diver, Nintendogs + Cats, Face Raiders, and others.
Hitting the green this week is Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters. The game is the first in the series to include the famed Augusta National golf course, home of the exclusive Masters tournament. The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game will feature 16 courses, with Sony's system also receiving a Collector's Edition of the game, which includes an extra five courses at a $10 premium over the standard edition. As in previous years, the Wii edition offers the most holes in one game, with Augusta National and 23 additional courses to play. PGA Tour 12 will also let players relive memorable shots from the Masters' storied history, including Woods' four Green Jacket wins at the tournament.
Racing fans have two new options this week: Shift 2 Unleashed: Need for Speed and NASCAR 2011: The Game. As for EA's game, Slightly Mad Studios developed Shift 2, and the game will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Within the package, gamers will find a number of different modes, including 40 single-type race events, where the playing field is leveled and gamers compete in the same make of car.
Gamers looking for a new NASCAR game can grab NASCAR 2011: The Game this Tuesday. The game will be a fully licensed NASCAR entry with more than 22 real-world tracks. It will also support up to 16 players and have an experience system, which will unlock cars, decals, and sponsors in career mode.
Beat-'em-up fans looking for a fix this week can grab Dynasty Warriors 7. The game introduces a new clan to the long-running series, letting players rewrite the history of ancient China with the Jin kingdom in addition to the Shu, Wu, and Wei factions. In another break from the series' tried-and-true formula, the game also lets characters wield multiple weapon types, switching between them on the fly in the middle of combat.
Those who prefer wrestling can pick up THQ's WWE All Stars this week for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, and Wii. The fast-paced, over-the-top wrestling game bundles a number of game modes, including standard 1 vs. 1, Triple Threat, Fatal 4 Way, Tornado Tag, Elimination, Extreme Rules, and Steel Cage. In addition, the game offers deeper play in the form of Path of Champions and Fantasy Warfare.
Gamers looking to revisit a decade-old franchise can pick up The 3rd Birthday this week for the PSP. Although it doesn't carry the Parasite Eve name, The 3rd Birthday stars franchise protagonist Aya Brea, who once again is put in the position of saving humankind from a monstrous biological menace. Set in Manhattan in 2012, the game sees the city beset by the monstrous creatures known as The Twisted, and Aya is once again tasked with saving the day.
For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

Like others I was in no rush to pick my 3DS up. I have been saving for it, so I bought it yesterday just to get it out of the way. Now I can start saving for NGP. Anyway, the 3D effect hurts my eyes when it's on full. I find I get less eye strain when it's on the lowest setting. The 3D still looks amazing on the lowest setting. It's a great system, looking forward to future games!
The best game coming out this week is deffinitly Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky, been waiting for this game for 5 years to get localised, & now we finally have it! Probably will be one of the best games of the year quite frankly! I'm also looking forward to 3rd Birthday, even though there are some who have ripped on it for various reasons. As for the 3DS, I just can't get interested, the one game I did play a couple months ago didn't impress me 3D-wise, my eyes were getting annoyed. So, when I get one, it'll be when the library of games is better, the price has dropped, AND it's the 3DS XL or whatever...not to mention I'll probably play it with the 3D off.
The 3DS is amazing! I love all three launch titles I got. The only place to get real 3D for cheap :D
@Stonecutters908 It was all a general statement. I know this is a gaming site. I understand the point of this area being for the 3DS. I was just posting my OPINION (which is still mine to post) about the price of a gaming device and what I would rather spend it on. I did mention that I could get four games with the same money. It's just that, I'm 30 years old. A lot of people here aren't. So with that same amount of money people are spending, I'd rather buy two games and something else. I will wait for this to drop. I guess you didn't understand the full message. Please, don't take things so personal. :)
Who cares about a 250$ piece o crap 3DS? Get wwe all stars, that would be more satisfying than wasting ur money on the 3ds and not even having enough for one of the games. And if u didn't care about being 1st one to get the 3ds then why did you say that?
you´re dumb if you fight to see whether Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft wins what matters is to have fun with video games WITHOUT LOSING YOUR SOCIAL LIFE!!!!!! the rest is just some stupid fanaticism video games were made so people would have FUN not fight because of it!!! oh and Zelda rocks! sad they will make people wait for a new one(guess it´s better than having a bad Zelda game)...
i seem to have gotten the 5DS instead. the games look great but am i supposed to be able to taste colors and OMG ELVES ARE CLIMBING UP MY SHOE I CAN'T TURN IT OFF HELPJAOIHRAUFHCUHPUDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I picked up the 3DS today and i must say im impressed. Def an amazing handheld sanz the battery but there are ways around that. Horrible launch though, I just couldn't commit $40 to any of the crappy launch titles. I ended up picking up zelda spirit tracks and DQ9 to hold me over until DOA comes out. Of course there's SSF4 but ive already bought that twice for consoles and its a much better exp on consoles imo.Overall i made out good though ended up getting mines completely off trade in credit.
Damn, besides the massive 3DS releases a big week for sports games. Might try my hand with NASCAR 11, nice to finally have one without EA's damn initials branded on it. Hopefully Activision won't do the same thing with this one like EA did, I mean what are the odds they would release the same game every year with just a minor tweaks and call it new. It's not like they do that....oh crap.
PixelAddict.. what rock have you been living under? Nintendo has marketed the crap out of the 3DS...
I cannot wait to get one. I'm waiting for some of Nintendo's first party games like Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, Mario Kart or some decent RPG games though before I pull the trigger as the launch titles do not interest me. If it is more than 6 months I will probably wait for the Lite version or whatever. Until then I have a huge backlog of DS/GBA games.
@TheTrainer1980 so let me sort this out. You have an account on a gaming site so you can make comments about how you would rather spend your money on things that have absolutely nothing to do with games? If you want to degrade something like the 3DS on a gaming website, I wouldn't start listing non-gaming alternatives like car tires as proof of money better spent because 99% of the people on here are gamers.
What is this 3DS you speak of...? I have never heard anything about it. They should really advertise and promote if they want to get ANY sales. ;)
@Flint247 You mention how you now have enough money for the 3DS and that you're going to buy it on day 1. You're not the only one in the world to get enough money for the 3DS and buy it on the first day. No need to keep saying it.
@yousillywizard I might be able to afford it, but I sure as hell don't want it. I have other things I can spend $250, and having a small handheld is not my first choice. I can buy four games for that price. I can get two new tires for my Jeep, some new clothes, a 12-pack and even maybe a fun evening with some ladies. I'll wait until it's $25. :)
@ yousillywizard To you, good sir(or good woman..)a thumbs up,and the mental image of a cookie. On Friday,I shall join you in ecstasy.
Ugh! IT'S KILLING ME! WHY DOES MY PAYCHECK HAVE TO COME ON FRIDAY!?!?! I have one pre-ordered,and there it sits, waiting for me to pay the rest of it.It calls to me,"Come to me,my friend.I'm lonely.I need a home. Adopt me and care for me as you would care for a small puppy with 3D laser vision and the ability to make you fly."
I picked up the 3DS today, I'm amazed at the 3D effect, it really works. Wish there were more titles available but I've got a couple to keep me busy for now, (Street Fighter, Rayman, Ridge Racer & Samurai Warrior) Nintendo did a great job on this system.
@WarioBro64 wow! Im surprised it has that many thumbs up's! I just assumed by the amount of haters and trolls that are going through this article that it would receive a lot of negative feedback. turns out I was wrong thanks for the feedback 3DS FOR THE WIN!!! =D
@yousillywizard Ready for lots of thumb downs? You shouldn't be! Your extensive comment makes some valid points!
HAHA I love how so many people are hating on the 3DS because they cant afford it. well....guess what?!. they gave you a year to save up 250$ the 3DS may cost 100$ but thats just for the RAW MATERIALS (this info was not even officially announced by nintendo, just some random website that tore it apart). but when you include production costs, development and shipment costs, and also the amount of money that the retailers have to make from it. The 3ds is a great deal. I picked up the aqua blue one with SSF4 and it is amazing, my entire family went crazy when they saw the AR games and the Face raiders game is a blast. I already found 4 people with 3DS' just by walking around the mall with street pass on. The 3D camera takes some pretty neat photos (not the greatest quality, but what does it matter). The graphics are a huge improvement from the regular DS and the Mii maker is hilarious. Sure the launch line up is definitely not the greatest, but neither was the original DS', and look how that turned out. whats that?!?......o ya...........145MILLION DS' SOLD AND COUNTING!!!. anyways im glad i bought a 3DS (with my own hard earned money). Pretty much what im trying to say here is just because you cant afford it, or you think the launch games suck, its no reason to hate on the system. (YOU KNOW I'M READY FOR LOTS OF THUMBS DOWN)!!
250 bucks for a 100 dollar item??? not this time nintendo:P got me with the wii and ds lite... never again. ill wait till i think the price is worth it:wink:
@lilrobda1 I already mentioned that I would be getting the 3DS on Day 1. And I did. Yes, I was originally planning on getting at least Street Fighter 4 for it, but I came up short in money. However, I decided to get the system anyways, in case there would be a shortage on supply. (I learned a lesson from the Wii/DS situation years ago) To be quite honest, I don't mind not having a game right now. I have school work and other games to play; so this way I won't be too distracted. Eventually, I will buy a 3DS game for it so I am using the system the way it is supposed to be used. For now, the preloaded stuff is satisfying so I don't regret not having a 3DS game right now. I will soon. That's just my opinion, to each their own. (And even if I am one of the people to get it first, who honestly cares?)
@yixingtpot "this thing is just ANOTHER Nintardo gimmick piece of rip off trash money pit nonsense. 3D on PS3 with 3DHDTV YES, 3D on this piece of junk, NO." glasses are gimmicks, you know. the only gimmick here is 3D on the PS3
It's an amazing piece of tech. I'm overly impressed of its features, however it was a barebones launch. The only title I bought was SF4 and I'm not a fan of the genre (still a very impressive game). The most anticipated games that were announced at E3 don't even have a release date yet, so I fear it will be a while for a top quality game to be available. Oh well, I could wait. At least it was much better than the DS's launch with only 4 games.
Why is WRC: FIA World Rally Championship on here? It came out in October. I was literally playing it 2 days ago.
@mumui10 Thats what sony was trying to do the whole time, their trying to bring the same experience as what you would get in a console system, but they add all sorts of extra stuff which imo doesnt improve the quality of the games. While Nintendo what they did with the DS was it was something new, they had alot of new games with a new style of gameplay even though it was gimmicky. People search for new things and adapt to them rather than the same thing. However some people just wanna enjoy games not cause of the gimmicky controls or anything. Its up to the gamer's taste. For me, I'm both a Nintendo fan and a Sony fan, but I'm not gonna fork over 250+ dollars (+ tax) just that easily.
@BasilVZero i hope i have the urge to wait lol ,i think im not a kind of person who have patient in waiting for their price to go down thats why i love 3ds because their price is just fair. and what i hate about sony's portable they make the game in psp like a literal portable version it's so dissapointing i want it to play like in console ,like complete experience. they reduced the gaming experience in their portable handheld.
