Shippin' Out July 19-25: Little King's Story, 'Splosion Man
Cing's RTS/RPG hybrid and XBLA action platformer blow up retail; PSN's Shatter, Watchmen compilation, and Rock Band Country Track Pack also mosey into stores.
Although there isn't a major release headlining this week's slate of games, there are several platform exclusives ducking under the radar, including Little King's Story for the Wii, 'Splosion Man and Black College Football Experience for the Xbox 360, and Shatter for the PlayStation 3.
Already out in Europe and Australia, Little King's Story is a critically acclaimed real-time strategy/role-playing hybrid exclusively for the Wii. The title was developed by Cing, the maker of Trace Memory and noir-style Hotel Dusk: 215. As outlined in GameSpot's review, Little King's Story is filled with gorgeous visuals, epic boss battles, and layers of subtle wit and cross-cultural references.
Only for the Xbox 360 are 'Splosion Man and a new version of Black College Football Experience, which was originally a 2007 PC game. Twisted Pixel's 'Splosion Man is an Xbox Live Arcade exclusive with 50 single-player levels and 50 multiplayer levels and can host up to three other players. In this action game, players control a laboratory's freak specimen who breaks out from his testing facility. Aspyr's new football sim, Black College Football Experience - The Doug Williams Edition, features 36 teams from black colleges and universities. There are also rhythm-based minigames during halftime.
Exclusively on the PlayStation Network for the PlayStation 3 is Shatter, a brick-breaking arcade game revival. As previewed on GameSpot, gamers must simultaneously play goalie and shooter, breaking bricks using an orb while trying to prevent the ball from getting past the player.
Despite a number of platform-specific games coming out this week, there are also some multiplatform releases. Disney's G-Force is coming out as an action game on the DS, PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360--an adaptation of the upcoming computer-generated guinea pig film. For the PS2, PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360 is Rock Band County Track Pack, which bundles 21 country hits like "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" and Kenny Roger's "The Gambler." For the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, parts one and two of Watchmen: The End Is Nigh are available as packages, though under separate title names. The PlayStation 3 package includes a Blu-ray disc of the film. See the list below for name details.
Barely missing this week's slate of releases is Wii Sports Resort, due out July 26 for the Wii. Bundled with the Wii MotionPlus peripheral, the game is a minigame compilation that introduces sword dueling, wakeboarding, archery, Frisbee, basketball, golf, table tennis, bowling, jet-skiing, cycling, canoeing, and air sports to the Wii Sports franchise.
For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and the Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.
