Shippin' Out February 19-23: Big names for next-gens, PC
Strong week of releases across all platforms highlighted by 360's Crackdown, PS3's VF5, Wii's Sonic, PC's Supreme Commander.
Let's get ready to rumble! This week's slate of new releases is a battle of timed exclusives, with each of the next-gen platforms (yes, that includes the PC) ending some dry spells and getting some strong offerings.
Pickings have been very slim for the PlayStation 3 since its launch, but that all came to an end today, as Virtua Fighter 5 kicked down retail doors. The first fighting game for the PS3, Sega's Virtua Fighter 5 features one-on-one fisticuffs with a roster of 17 brawlers. Once a PS3-exclusive, Virtua Fighter 5 will also duke it out on the Xbox 360 later this year.
Those who want to hurl cars, bound through cities, and clean up the streets in Realtime Worlds' latest better have an Xbox 360. Gamers can only lay the smack down in Crackdown, also released today, on Microsoft's newest console. In the game, players suit up as cops who gain superhuman abilities and bust gang lord after gang lord. The game also includes keys to access the multiplayer beta of some other game (the name escapes me at the moment).
Over in Wiiville, Sonic the Hedgehog gets the motion-sensitive treatment in Sonic and the Secret Rings. Sure, gamers will control the blue blur as he runs around exotic worlds collecting rings, but this time, they'll do it while moving the controller around! The game also features a multiplayer component for up to four speedsters in 40 minigames. Sonic has already rolled onto next-gen platforms, but Wii owners are hoping this version fares better than Sonic's debut on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
For the keyboard-and-mouse crowd, the latest from Chris Taylor's Gas Powered Games also hit shelves today. Supreme Commander, the spiritual successor to the classic Total Annihilation, is a real-time strategy game in a science-fiction setting. Gamers will control air, land, and sea units and make use of the strategic zoom feature, which seamlessly lets players change their view from a close-up of the action to a macroscopic level.
While not exactly a timed exclusive, the Xbox 360 version of NBA Street Homecourt (out today) wins the tip against its PS3 counterpart, which laces them up on March 6. It's the debut of the Street series on next-gen consoles and features the kind of acrobatic balling usually reserved for mascots bouncing off trampolines during halftime shows.
On the console downloads front, two of the big three are dishing out offerings for their consoles. Nintendo released Streets of Rage, The Legend of Kage, New Adventure Island, and Donkey Kong Country for the Virtual Console on Monday. On Thursday, PS3 owners will be able to browse the PlayStation Store for Q*bert and flOw. No games are planned for release for the Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade this week.

not too many big names comming
The new Sonic game for the Wii looks cool.
"$600 is greedy for Game Console." Yes, but people pay it don't they? How does that make Sony any greedier than anyone else? None of these guys, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, are running a charity, they are trying to make a buck like the rest of us. The fact that we give them the money says more about the payer than the recipient.
88_movement , your a noob, the wii and the 360 own the ps3 right now, besides the ps3 is a waste of $600, id rather rebuild my pc with that money
Well put, jimmypop_04, well put.
88_movement...please be quiet. There is nothing wrong with the Wii. Sure it doesn't pack the punch that the PS3 or 360 have, but it is still fun to play. Pretty sure my ENTIRE family was transfixed by the Wii this weekend. Your just sad that your PS3 almost cost as much as a Wii and a 360 put together. I just hope the quality of games stays the same with all this competition.
Gforce lol you slay me man. God of War 2 will never come out on PS3. It came out on ps2 only because they were already half way finished with it when the PS3 launched. It would be stupid to waste the resources to restart the game developent all over again. God of War 3 is coming to PS3. How many times must this be said.

I was hoping someone would ask. Hey sain_skywalker, I call it greedy because Sony will release games now for ps2 only so everyone thinks it won't be on next gen. Then, several months later, they'll release it on ps3 so they can sell another copy to anyone who couldn't wait. $600 is greedy for Game Console. No one cares about Blu-ray. It's dead before it ever gets started because "Hi-def" is already what everyone is thinking about and buying, not Blu-ray. Sony tried to take over the video market with "Beta" video cassettes and failed. It seems they haven't learned their lesson yet about trying to muscle in on established markets.
Gforce since when is charging 600 for a Blu-Ray greedy? Lawl whatta nub Fanboy lawl, it's greedy because they release a game on the PS2, a console most households already have? which is selling very well despite having next gen consoles out? That's def greedy
glad to see a good sonic game again.
i got some good news guys..... wikipedia says... # Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection (Namco Bandai Games) (Flag of Japan 12.27.06, Flag of United States 02.26.07, Flag of European Union 03.23.07) remember we got mad about them not releasing it in the US?????
yay, Sonic! ^^
supreme commander looks cool
Sony may be greedy but they are only trying to make up for their loss of money but they do not rip off their customers cuz it has been reported after the 12 month warranty XBOX 360 shuts down. Wii... well i couldn't care less its cheap and rubbish.
LOL! Sony is greedy, but Microsoft and Nintendo are altruistic cottage industries. LOL!
Lexlas:"These are all descent choices and all but next month is the month tha counts for me as GOD of War II is out. I wonder why it was not made for PS3 ? " Here's why. It's because Sony is GREEDY! That's right, GREEDY! First they charge way too much for their new console, then they only release new games for their old console. What's that smell like? GREED! This isn't the only new game they're releasing that's a ps2 only game. Don't fall for it people. Call Sony out on their GREED and don't buy these games until they release them for next gen.(or until Microsoft takes the wind out of their sails and releases the same game for x360!) Patience friends!
Why This does NOT include Final Fantasy 12 release in EUROPE?? it is tomorrow.
It is probably to much to hope that UFO will recapture the glory days of X-COM, but I'll hope anyway. :)
I've looked for flOw like three times on PSN and it's only 9:35 am here. I REALLY wanna play it.
lookin forward to v fighter...
Only 2 new release for the 360? I want more! :(
i didn't dig crackdown that much, seemed a little meh to me. virtua fighter 5, well i haven't really played a VF game that much since 2, 3 a little.....hm, maybe its time to pick it back up, anything new on the ps3 would be nice right now
jetgodlike, don't hold your breath for several of those games you mentioned to come out in 07. fable 2 (probably not), resident evil 5 (um.....no), fear 2?(doubtful)
not bad at all, lots of good games coming out
The AFL game looks good to me. Some excellent choices for the DS too.
this year is a great year for the xbox360 with games like (LostPlanet, Crackdown, Halo3, GTA4, Froza2, Fable2, AssassinsCreed, F.E.A.R2, Area51, Unreal2007, MassEffect, TooHuman, PGR4, HaloWars, BioShock, Half-Life2, VirtuaFighter5, G.R.A.W2, TwoWorlds, Armyoftwo, Turock, ResentEvil5, C&C3, DefJamIcon + last years games GearsofWar, Fifia, ProEvo, CoD3 and Oblivion) lol
These are all descent choices and all but next month is the month tha counts for me as GOD of War II is out. I wonder why it was not made for PS3 ?
UFO! man I hope it is good, I want to play a good turn based x-com game. I be a jones'n
The PC has some great titles coming out. The 360 is going to be slow for a while...blah.
crackdown is awesome but Qbert and Flow are lame
i want crackdown and sonic
yay crackdown yay vf5 :D
motorstorm motorstorm motorstorm motorstorm I CANNOT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! who cares about these games
Supreme commander YEAHHHH
Supreme Commander... That's all that I have to say.
No mention from Gamespot about the fact that Galactic Civilizations 2 Dark Avatar has been released or even a review at the least. Obviously Gamespot isn't being offered enough money to mention it, as that is the only explanation for it.
hehehe. so many games. dont know what to do......
getting sonic this week, very excited
iwo4life If these are such big names why did GS flop all of them. VF5, Crackdown. They were hyped by this site but killed in the reviews. Killed? Since when are 7.8 and 8.1 games so horrible that you must avoid at all cost?
Kingdom hears is a big serie, Tomb raider is a big serie yet gamespot always flop them, Gamespot reviews doesn't mean crap and thank god for that
If these are such big names why did GS flop all of them. VF5, Crackdown. They were hyped by this site but killed in the reviews.
Metal Slug needs to port to the DS
Crackdown wil be the #1 seller of this group.
flOw looks trippy, VF5 looks awesome and only 2 weeks till Motorstorm!!! FINALLY some PS3 love!!!!!
VF5,Yesss
Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja? wtf ftw? sounds awesome. flOw sounds cool, too. Virtua Fighter 5 and Supreme Commander? awesome week
I picked up Crackdown. It's a decent game, but I wish I didn't get motion sickness when I played it. Uhhgg. I'll get NBA Street Homecourt off of EBay once the price drops. That game isn't worth $60 bones. I could care less about Supreme Commander or VF5 right now. I'll get VF5 once it's released for the XBox 360.
some great games here this title made me laugh: Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja is she on the dole? claim benefits?
That's a nice lineup for all platforms. I can't wait for the next week though: it's Jade Empire week!
