There sure are a lot of "Final" fantasy games. Reminds me of all the never ending close out sales at stores.
Square Enix's Crystal Bearers for the Wii leads a light release slate including the retail launch of Guitar Hero: Van Halen.
'Twas the week before (and including) Christmas, and all through the lands, not a game was releasing, except for a pair of big brands. Tortured poetry aside, this week sees just two big retail releases: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers for the Wii and Guitar Hero: Van Halen on a handful of platforms.
Activision is first out of the gates with an edition of Guitar Hero dedicated to the David Lee Roth-led incarnation of the hard rock band. Although the game is appearing in stores for the first time this week, it was originally given away in October to early purchasers of Guitar Hero 5.
The release plans of this week's other title are almost as unconventional. Months ago, Square Enix chose the day after Christmas to launch its latest Wii installment in the Final Fantasy franchise. While other major games have launched in the last week of the year before (Dead or Alive 4 for the Xbox 360 released December 29, 2005), it's more common for that to happen by delay rather than by design.
Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers--WII--Square Enix
Geez, after the 29th it will be 4 years since doa4 came out, with no new installment in sight.....*sigh*
@ badiie05 No kidding.....I have been saying that for the entire last half of the year. This year was not that great for games at all. Next year will be amazing though, I can hardly wait. I am really excited to see what the surprise hit will be ie: in previous years it was Bioshock and Batman: AA
yea, many say 2009 was a great year for games but i don't know why but the most popular games were not that appealing to me like UC2, AC2,COD:MW2, GH5, [Prototype], Infamous..and a few more...don't know if it was the games or me :P ...its the games =] 2010 on the other hand sounds convincing :P with Heavy Rain, Darksiders, Dante's Inferno, Bioshock 2 AND GOW 3
I played Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers all week last week and its fun, not what u'd expect from FF, but cool. Controls are a bit messed up, but its OK, I'd give it a 7 or 8/10.
madSomnambulist, Square Enix's fiscal year ends March 31. Their year end reports won't be filed until then, so really this game will be on their year end report to investors. I don't see how a December 26 release date means the development costs can be pushed into 2010 considering they developed the game prior. It has more to do with delays than anything or they are trying to capitalize on post-Christmas returns.
SE I -think- are being sneaky and smart on this. They've (somehow) run a profit this year-- but not by much. This release date choice means the majority of its US revenue will be in 2010 and that will pad next year's revenue a little while having 1 less game on the releases list and no more development costs added. FF13 they could well have deliberately kept within 2009 (and late!), decided in Q1 or 2 by the Board to help assure being in the black for the year and use later Japanese sales to pad in the same way. Looks good and makes everyone happy for at least one company in a disgusting year for the industry as a whole. Trying stuff like this is incredibly detailed micromanagement to help demonstrate sustained company performance. ...Assuming at all true.
@ ayumi_miyazaki CC isn't about story though. Thats what killed it for me. What made the first great was getting friends together to go and have an interesting hack and slash. It was like an improved Gauntlet. Used to go to a friends house to play this game because it was good. They need to focus on the co-op play more than story. Thats what made the first one great.
Q1 2010 games FTW. I agree with oneligas that they should stop making these bs hero crap games Activision.
And with that, 2009 goes out with a splat. This year wasn't so great for video games. There were some great ones, make no mistake, but overall, things weren't so hot. Luckily 2010 will totally clean up. I can't wait.
It was a huge surprise today when i went for a new game and i found that Crystal Bearers was already at retail, i was like, damn, why i didn't know about that.
FF:CC looks like a hit to me.I heard this crystal chronicles has more story than the other ones and it looks good too
the games I really want - mafia 2, mag, heavy rain, agent, L.A. Noir, gt5 oo wow its all ps3 exclusives except mafia 2 well I guess its sony time to really shine for 2010 :) and no not a fanboy got a 360 also, in which I only buy freeroaming games on it thats it all the shooters on the ps3 lol
For all the good girls and boys that get gift cards or cash, can go buy these after Christmas. I agree, they need to stop making these guitar games. They are old news and above all else, boring. We'll see how Final Fantasy does, could be hit or miss on the Wii.
great, no new releases demanding much attention, can keep saving more of my money for the slew of hot releases scheduled for the three following months
(1.)The only FF games that are worth playing are 4-5-6-7 and i won't buy any FF this isn't a next gen remake of those games. (2.)Stop MAKING Guitar toy games already they are stupid.
Kindredmachine: Did you even play the game(or any Crystal Chronicles games)to make that assumption, I'm getting really tire of fanboy acting so dumb just because it Isn't the Main Final Fantasy game they wish it was(which I'm alright with because it something new and fresh), I like both series as well as Tactics and I would probably like the others as well(want to play the Chocobo Dungeon game on Wii and the Wiiware Crystal Defender games), but I don't see why FF fans can't like both series it not like Square Enix replace the main one they're still doing those so stop whining it just ridiculous.
Why would they hype this game? Everyone knows Crystal Chronicle games are terrible. That's why it's coming out only on the Wii.... bring on the shouvleware
One thing that the game could have going for it, is a lot of kids will have spending money AFTER Christmas.
There is absolutely no reason to release Crystal Chronicles after Christmas when the only Tuesday competition is a Guitar Hero game
I swear Square wants this final fantasy game to fail. First they had a terrible December 26th release date planned then they go ahead and release the game without a word. I just don;t understand it unless it really isn't that great of a game and they know it. They should hype it up like they do with Final Fantasy XIII.
*sigh* Im not sure if I care for this new CC, Dont you guys remember the first one for the GC. That was so awesome and I loved how you could team up with 3 friends. Thats what I really want a sequel to that exept with online play and offline coop.
there's just a problem: square enix released crystal bearers two days ago, and didn't explain why. but people are already buying it.
@ the caption's question: Depending on how you want to look at things, it could be either one. From the most logic of perspectives, releasing Crystal Bearers the day AFTER Christmas is probably the dumbest thing Square-Enix could have done if they wanted this game to be successful. This game would have better luck if it was released on Christmas Eve; at least then it might have a chance of being looked at by last-minute shoppers (and I DO mean last-minute). Now, the game will have to wait until most people get their gaming fill from the presents they've received before considering picking this one up, unless they knew about the release date in advance and prepared accordingly. On the other hand, if S-E wanted this game to flop for some reason (and when it concerns Wii third party games, it's not too crazy saying such things), this was probably the best thing they could do to flood out a Final Fantasy release, even if it's not an installment of the main series to begin with. Would love to hear S-E's response regarding this one. :P
That sounds like the dumbest idea in the history of game releases. The day after Christmas? I'm still planning on picking FFCC:TCB up though.
Why would you release a game on the 26th?...push for the Christmas rush or wait...I can't see this really working well.
