Shadowrun Online F2P model explained

Tactical turn-based RPG to introduce a free-to-play and campaign model; players of both models will be housed on the same server.

Developer Cliffhanger Productions has shed light on the free-to-play model of upcoming tactical turn-based RPG Shadowrun Online.

In a post on the Shadowrun website, the development team cleared up confusion surrounding the differences between the game's campaign model and the free-to-play (F2P) model.

Free-to-play users will access different features to those who pay for the campaign version of the game. All players will be housed on the same server.

Gamers who sign up with the free-to-play model will be able to use an additional premium currency that is purchaseable with real money. The premium currency can be used to buy certain in-game items which are obtainable only via this method for F2P users.

Players who opt for the F2P model can also choose to purchase a game subscription, adding the "boosted karma and cash" status to the account which grants a temporary bonus to in-game loot-finding and a "slightly weighed influence on plot development". Gamers who pay an on-going fee will still hold the F2P status in the shop.

Gamers who purchase the campaign version of the game will be able to buy every item with in-game currency (called Nuyen) and receive a boost in cash, karma, and loot chances. Campaign players will also have "weighed influence on the plot development".

Free-to-play gamers who wish to transition from F2P to the campaign version of the game are able to do so by purchasing a campaign box, which carries over any existing character and items.

Shadowrun Online is the second Kickstarter project set in the Shadowrun world. The project was successfully backed on August 15, 2012 and does not currently have a confirmed release date.

Mouse and Keyboard takes less skill to use then a controller for FPS.

I remember when Shadowrun came out on the PC and Xbox 360 for cross platform play.  Turned out that the PC ppl couldnt keep up with the console gamers.  So much for PC superiority...

@Gravity_Slave Uh it actually was the opposite.  The console people couldn't keep up with the PC people...  Mouse and keyboard rule.  I love consoles I have all of them but I cannot play FPS games on them.  Too used to mouse and keyboard.  They add extra tricks to consoles so you don't notice like auto aiming....

I'll check it out before I judge, I used to think f2p was always rubbish but I recently found World of Tanks, and I love it.

Nice to see how educated gamers are that they still think that F2p is still for scams.

@Jestersmiles  Dota 2 is the worst everything is micro transactions and has very little content, no wonder it is still in beta.... LOL is way ahead of the game...

@stan_boyd @Jestersmiles It's not f2p, it's Buy 2 Play but OP is a moron who thinks 5 examples negate the dozens of games that are indeed what people assume an f2p game is like.

@DarkSaber2k @stan_boyd @Jestersmiles There are good f2p games out there. Claiming that there are dozens of games that people assume what f2p is like; sure. There are tons of bad f2p games. However by that logic, every game is terrible. There are countless video games out there that are awful. ET, Custers Revenge, South Park, Superman 64, Starcraft 64 (Not PC), War Z and countless simulators. If we're going to assume games due to the number of bad games out there, every game is terrible. If you actually think of good games, you'll have a much better time finding games to play.

@DarkSaber2k @Jestersmiles The GW2 mistake is irrelevant , my whole point is about there being GOOD F2p models out there and you know it. Don't try to spin things.

Well its is kind of. F2P is mostly used to exploit in such way that you pay much more like for a full prices title. And if you don't pay then the game annoys you or slows your progress to a crawl

StinkySkunkGirl

@Jestersmiles The only thing close to good in that list is Path of Exile. Guild Wars 2 is one of the least horrible MMORPGs I've played, but that doesn't exactly make it good.

Dota 2 is not a game. It's a griefing simulator that's fun to play when I'm too tired to play a game, or when I'm eating and can't think of something to watch on Youtube. I'll just make some breakfast, and I can click to feed the enemy team while I feed myself IRL.

In short, none of those games are worth playing. Neither will Shadowrun Online. Not that anybody cares, since we'll be playing Shadowrun Returns soon.

@StinkySkunkGirl @Jestersmiles So just because YOU don't like the game on the list that negates my comment? LOL ok Kayne ,sorry but it time get off your high horse bro, excuse me Sis.

oopomop

@nrambo @Jestersmiles That's not ironic. Jester is not on a high horse, thus there is no irony.

The fact is that there are good games that are free to play. Regardless of whether or not an individual enjoys them is mute; it's the quality of the games that we're discussing. Claiming games are bad quality just because you personally don't like them is a terrible excuse.

In addition, claiming Path of Exile is the best in the list. PoE is a great game, yes. However, it is still in beta and has quite a few problems. I do repeat though, it is a great game; I enjoyed my 3 months of playing it.

Bring this out on a console, and I will pay any money they want for it. PC is a terrible platform to game on.

@exedeath The PC is the best platform for gaming, and the most versatile. You can hook up a controller to a PC if you want to -- I was playing Hotline Miami with one last night -- but you can't hook up a mouse and keyboard to a console. Which generally means MMOs are out of the question for consoles. So no Shadowrun for you.

F2P is the biggest bait and switch in gaming. Just think about how many cellphone games you downloaded and deleted not a halfhour later once you hit that first brick wall. It's like a game is designed just to be free until that 15 minutes passes and Google Play can't issue a refund anymore.

oopomop
oopomop

@crunchb3rry I can count. 0. I don't spend money recklessly or needlessly. The same applies to F2P games. The only time I've spent money has been on two games, both of which only 3 weeks after playing. I paid because I wanted to support the company for creating a game that I've spent 3 weeks enjoying. That 3 weeks is a hell of a lot more time than I spent playing 60 dollar games like Assassins Creed.

DarkSaber2k

@crunchb3rry And how, exactly, would you go about getting a refund for a game that was free?

THIS is what I like to see. Call me old school, but I prefer a subscription model in MMOs. Having the option to roll with a sub in a FTP game to bypass the need to buy boosts and things of this nature work for me. However, having perks from a sub AND boosts would be more P2W and overkill - a sub should be the end all, be all for content access and progress.

What I HATE are microtransactions for in game items, but things like XP I can live with. (Mind you, I hate F2P in general and prefer subs, but I can reluctantly deal if the only perk is XP) I can live with a game that favors the sub model, because the whole point of a FTP game should be to get people to try the game and enjoy it enough to WANT a sub so they don't have to grind anymore. I don't understand why so many people these days expect everything to be handed to them free of charge.

The funny thing I've noticed is the biggest opponents to the subscription model are often the biggest complainers when it comes to F2P business models, when they're getting what they asked for. Personally, the only game that got it right to me was Anarchy Online. You got the entire original game minus expansions and 200 levels with normal XP progress to see if you wanted to graduate to the sub content.

Honestly, I like to see the sub model roll out first, with the option for F2P later on. That way, the game isn't designed with a cash shop in mind and you already have a paying community who won't stand for balance issues related to a newly introduced MC economy. Most F2P out the gates games have lower production values, garbage communities, and are made with nickel and diming you in mind from the start (which, in theory probably stifles creativity).

@midgar

I agree with your poinnts.  Since all games need money to survive, I think that making a sub a good option even in F2P games (and one that's the end all be all) is the way to go.

Honestly, so many F2P games treat the player so disrespectfully and cheat them so much that I find it worth paying a subscription just to get better treatment and a better experience.

Or at least the option where you pay for the box, and the online play is free.  Anything where you get your money's worth and the money's requested from you respectfully.

I like Shadowrun Returns' model better... I'm thinking my Shadowrun needs will be met with that one as well. It's not impossible that this won't ruin the game, but if history is any indicator, it's going to be p2w... F**k "boosts" btw. Your game should not need any of the "make money/experience faster " items. I've never played a game that had those that didn't end up like a massive grind without using them...

jinzo9988
jinzo9988

@---Cipher--- That's what the whole structure of that kind of free to play game relies on.  They're scams.  I know this 10 year old free to play MMORPG that still doesn't legitimately have someone at its level cap yet(legitimately because other publishers cranked up the XP rates beyond what the game intended).  People actually whine about losing training time when the servers go down... it's ridiculous.

I have yet to find a game that does microtransactions/"Free to Play" well.

Some examples : Smite-meh (one of the better ones since real money only buys you gods or skins like LOL)   Warframe- not really (economy isn't very good for F2P)   Ghost Recon Online- meh (the economy sucks imo)   LOL- meh     Alliance of Valiant Arms- TERRIBLE   Warface - TERRIBLE   Blacklight Retribution- actually decent system.

@JURGMANDR DOTA 2 model is pretty much the best microtransactions model you will ever find.

@JURGMANDR Unless your buying power I'm happy with the model in play mostly.

Planet Side 2 was alright because your picked what gun suits you the most, no need for buying everything, that's not how it works, silly to think that.

Path of Exile looked good from what I saw too.

@JURGMANDR What's wrong with the LOL model?  There's always 10 characters that are free to play, and they rotate them every week to provide variety.  If there's a particular character you want to play all the time, it doesn't take long at all to have enough virtual credits to permanently unlock them.
