@mos2000 Resistance has more in common with Gears of War than Halo (storyline-wise). gameplay-wise its not the same as halo either, R2 is slightly similar though. Plus I'd rather play Resistance for its story (>Gears) and its relative difficulty (Gears= easy).
$1.28 billion haul, 1% growth ends months of double-digit decline; Sony's console sells 491,000 systems; Halo 3: ODST sells 1.52 million units; analyst split on implications.
In a rare move, last week the NPD Group pushed back its September 2009 US game sales reports until today. This afternoon, it became clear why NPD wanted to double-check its figures. During the September reporting period, sales increased by a razor-thin margin, rising just $0.01 billion (that is, $10 million) from September 2008's $1.27 billion to $1.28 billion the year prior.
The increase broke six months of straight decline during which the game industry lost its "recession resistant" label. However, the fact that NPD's September 2009 reporting period was five weeks (August 30-October 3) compared to last September's four weeks caused the industry-research firm to say game sales were essentially flat.
"The industry managed a modest increase over September 2008 and generated the second best-selling September on record after 2007 when Halo 3 released and sold over 3 million copies that month," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier in a statement. "On a unit sales basis, the industry was flat. The increase in revenues is driven by a rise in average retail prices in all categories with the exception of console hardware in which the average retail price decreased 8 percent from last September."
Indeed, the price drops of all three consoles dragged hardware revenue down six percent to $472.28 million. The DS was the top-selling platform once again, moving 524,200 units during September. However, in second place was the PlayStation 3, boosted by the late-August introduction of the $300 120GB PlayStation Slim and closeout discounts of previous models. It sold 491,800 units; its best posting since it launched in November 2006.
Not far behind the PS3 was the Nintendo Wii, which sold 462,800 units, thanks in part to its new $200 price point. Nintendo reps were quick to alert the press that the number was a 67 percent increase over August, even though the price reduction only began during the final week of the reporting period.
In fourth with 352,600 units was the Xbox 360, the 120GB Elite model of which was also reduced to $300--with a further $50 rebate offered during the last few days of the reporting period. In fifth place was the pre-Go PSP with 190,400 units, followed by the PlayStation 2's 146,000 units.
"All three console manufacturers enjoyed the impact of lower prices on unit sales as the PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360 realized an increase over August of 87 percent, 33 percent, and 31 percent respectively, on an average sales per week basis (keeping in mind September was a five-week month compared to four weeks in August)," said Frazier.
She continued, "Compared to last September, the PS3 was the big winner, more than doubling last year's sales. This portrays a very strong consumer reaction to the price decrease as August and September both realized a lift of more than 70 percent over the prior month. This is the first month that the PS3 has captured the top spot in console hardware sales."
On the software side, Microsoft's 360-exclusive Halo 3: ODST debuted by selling 1.52 million units in the US--more than half its global 2.5 million-plus sales total. In second was the still-popular WiiMotion Plus pack-in Wii Sports Resort with 442,900 units, followed by the 360 edition of Madden NFL 10 with 289,600 units. Fourth place saw the debut of another well-reviewed newcomer, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story with 258,100 units.
In the battle of the band games, MTV Games and Electronic Arts' The Beatles: Rock Band took the rhythm-game crown, selling 595,000 units while Activision's confidently promoted Guitar Hero 5 sold 499,000 units. The Xbox 360 edition of the Beatles: Rock Band came in fourth by selling 254,000 units, with the Wii edition ranking 10th with 208,600 units.
With just 132,000 units sold, the PS3 edition of The Beatles: Rock Band did not make the top 10. However, the Xbox 360 edition of Guitar Hero 5 did crack the chart, landing in ninth place with 210,800 units. However, the PS3 was better represented than usual on the top 10, taking sixth (Madden NFL 10) and eighth place (Batman: Arkham Asylum).
"We know all eyes are going to be on the Rock Band and Guitar Hero sales since the music/dance genre has been so closely followed by many this year," said Frazier. "Both titles captured a spot in the top 10 for the month, and at the item level across all platforms, The Beatles: Rock Band came in third behind Halo 3: ODST and Madden NFL 10 while Guitar Hero 5 came in fourth. The Beatles: Rock Band achieved this level of success with an average retail price premium of 130 percent to the average retail price for software overall. The sales of Rock Band and Guitar Hero led the music/dance genre to a 72 percent dollar sales increase over September 2008."
Other analysts were less upbeat about The Beatles' showing. "What's striking is the low overall dollar figure for the two games, which were out for almost the entire month," Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter told GameSpot. "The two combined fell short of $100 million, and I had forecast $210 million."
Fraizer, however, saw another silver lining in the month's figures. "Madden NFL 10 made up some ground this month," she said. "Although when launched in August, the game sold 19 percent fewer units than its predecessor a year prior, with a second month of sales in, that deficit has been reduced to 13 percent, which bodes very well for the title through the holiday season."
However, not all analysts share Fraizer's optimism. Electronic Entertainment Design and Research director of analyst services Jesse Divnich thinks there could be dark clouds on the horizon. He told GameSpot, "What we witnessed during the last week of September was a large drop-off in core hardware and software sales, indicating that the excitement over the PS3 and Xbox 360 hardware price cuts wore off quicker than anticipated."
Divnich continued, "In addition, the number of games purchased in conjunction with these hardware sales was lower than usual. This data suggests that most of the industry’s revenue for September was driven largely on the crutch of hardware price cuts. This is disappointing as it indicates that consumers are not being driven to purchase on key software titles--a significant driver for overall holiday performance. With this data now visible, it is most likely that October sales will be weaker than previously expected."

@AlfaxD_Centauro DUDE i got a q6600 at 3.3 8 gigs of ram and dual 8800GTs I WILL BE GETTING THE PC VERSION but this is was the losers who this xbox is a good GAMING console... Its nothing but a sidekick!
The DS isn't crap. It is an excellent quality handheld with a large library. Now, I've never played any other handheld; and judging by how Nintendo has upgraded their handhelds; I'd say they've done a good job. People will pay $ for good quality things!
I was actually expecting Dissidia: Final Fantasy to be in the top 10 software and Nintendo DS on top???, I'm 11 and i don't own one, but everyone and I MEAN all 688 People in my school own that crappy piece of development, it's rune with a cardboard tube and a hamster wheel and all the stupid kids want it and these statistics mean there are 524,200 Ignorant Children out there begging their Parents for that crap.
Great, now lets get some decent games sony. Your hardware might finally be appealing to people (although you still can't safely set a beer on it) but your games suck beyond comprehension. Give us a new Twisted Metal, with NO gimmicky motion controls. And by the way, Spider Man called and he want's his font back.
@Blueforce1746 Dude of course it's on top, it's a handheld. lol Anyway I added to the DS sales kind of recently with my new DSi. Gotta love the variety of games for it.
no PixelAddict i have an actual life and a fanboy is bashing something, your such a fanboy your seeing bashing everywhere where there is none. go ahead be scammed, and if i were to buy borderland the xbox360 would be the last place i would get it.. you like getting scammed don't u? Microsoft doesn't even support basic usb storage (and third party memory can cause you to get banned on xbox live, talking about a scam).
Put it this way. Fanboys are horrid and will always contribute to 80% of all comments on Gamespot news articles. But in all seriousness, good job there Sony. I never really expected a moment like this to happen this soon, but good job to you.
PsP go sucks, I could have told them it was going to tank. Sony has no idea what it's doing with handhelds, this is worst they've made yet. At least with previous upgrades you could use your games. Now all your UMD discs are useless and they actually expect you to buy them all again for the new PsP version. That's a laugh. I think I'd rather just keep what I've got.
@ savagetofu thats because most people who would have fallen for the wii ad's already have, ie the non-gamers. look at dead space extraction sales, its pathetic......shows only casuals play the wii or the hardcore dont bother with it anymore because they got ps3 or xbox. consoles with real benefits can only increase rate of sales despite crap marketting, ie the ps3.
@kaizerjinn No need 2 fret GS community. I'm not spazzin - trust me. My name aint Kruger, I'm not leapin out of from no ones futon tonight... I'm blunt. And times you need to be. Because believe you me: developers, publishers along with the Big 3 have their people plugged into these posts. They need to know that a large number of us aren't sippin the kool-aide. I am disappointed however to hear that posters are getting loads of hate mail for the right you are defending (in which I agree with). Post what you want and how you feel. If what you put out there is factually flawed, anybody has the right to challenge it without taking personal jabs at folks. My statement was in regards to fanboys who feel the need to harass folks and flood their personal inbox for expressing their views, not cool.
yeah go halo. Finally getting my xbox fixed after 3 months of sitting in my room, microsoft is pretty quick at reapairs too. And to all the fanboys who tell me to get a ps3, I kind of actually liked it when my xbox broke, I found a lot more time for more important things
@mos2000 yikes, dude. chill... it's not that serious. everyone has their preference, and support it differently. maybe you should stop blogging or reading other peoples blog, if your going to get offended about every little thing. i look at it like sports fans. they not on the team or playing the game, but they talk alot of $#it. heck, during certain games they literally fight over it. Yes SOME people might take it overboard, and i think we could do without the personal insults, but it comes with the territory. they have a preference and they support it and want others to be on the bandwagon. it's all amusing to me. i find the fanboys halirous. LoL. back to the subject at hand though... i'm glad PS3 is doing much better. hopes it continue. big fan of PS3 and sony's products.
I bought a PS3 slim last month; haven?t bought any games for it yet. Wanted a blu-ray player and I figured for a little extra, what the hell.
I own all 3 consoles and enjoy them all and if I were asked to recommend 1 here is what I would say. I enjoy my 360 more for 1 simple reason I have A LOT more friends that have a 360 which increases my chances of playing a game and communicating with them online. The only other true advantage is the online is slightly better(Sony has started catching up...but it has taken 5-15 minute updates every couple of months to do so.) The 360 used to have more exclusives but the PS3 has virtually eliminated that advantage recently with the exception of download content and a few time delayed games. The PS3 if you don't care about what your friends have(or you have more friends with a PS3) is quite simply at this price the best value in gaming right now. With free online, Blu-ray, and wireless included only the most hardened fanboy would deny that it is a great value. Plus with Uncharted 2, God of War 3, and MAG they have a really solid lineup of exclusives coming. The Wii I would only recommend as the primary console if you are really into casual games or Nintendo exclusives(Mario, Zelda, and Metroid). Otherwise I would recommend it as a possible second console if you already own 1 of the other 2 just because the Nintendo exclusives are really good and there are a few other decent games on the Wii. This is just my opinion.
Anyone notice gas prices going up? Unemployment is worse then it has been in over 30 years & Nintendo is selling less Wii's then they did after 3 years of launch? Over 400,000+ units sold about $200.00 a unit should equal about 80,000,000 dollars. I fail to see a problem here.
I am here to announce that I'm a fanboy... of @Kimcheewarriorx so all u who want 2 send Kimchee hatemail because he/she speaks the truth - send it my way. For those who know me, we can go back and forth ALL DAY! With that said let me state: console fanboy'ism is dumb. Pledging allegiance to any console like they are paying u is idiotic. I prefer my 360, but MS has a lot of sh@$ they need to address as well - and I voice that regularly. All 3 console makers are coming half-@ss this gen and we look stupid trying to defend every little thing they do as if we're on their pay roll. It's one thing 2 debate nonfactual comments or highlight qualities of your favorite console. It's another to start kissin a companies salad shooter - and start making up pipe dreams about how perfect any of these j@g-offs are. Earth to Gamespot posters: blood of the almighty does not flow through your console - so wake-up! Show some respect. Rip the comment, not the poster.
Mind you, this is only the US sales basically consisting of 5% of the worlds population. So lets see a show of hands who don't own a DS yet.
and as the fanboy issue seems to overtake this comment blog i say this to all idiot fanboys with nothing else to do but harass and disrespect on a website. number 1 get a real job, if you already have 1 get a life. number 2 people have every right to post their opinion about a certain company or system on this site thats why this is called the "comments" section.. an opinion is an OPINION and everyone is entitled to theirs..we can have itellectual debates about why we think we made the right decision to purchase and become loyal customers of a company but keep it right there, if you get offended and decide to verbally lash back because i said sony was a better company then microsoft it means you need a physcoanalysis to get your brain checked out or you probably didnt reach the age of 16 yet..
i cant stand anything microsoft, there products are cheaply made, quality sucks and everything they have becomes a technical issue.....xbox360 is perfect example of microsoft showmanship...im not just talking about their consoles im talking about there company as a whole!!! pls mr gates i know your retired but hire people who care about quality then maybe i might just get the next xbox maybe untill then ps3 is my gaming choice...
In my opinion, both the 360 and PS3 have strengths and weaknesses so I can't really say one is better than the other. It really depends on your personal interests. I am still going to try and get both though. A PS3 for Uncharted 2, MAG, the PS1 games, free online and other features and a 360 for Halo 3 and some other exclusives, XBL features, and other features.
@KimCheeWarriorX I have to agree. I actually got called a name because I said I was interested in buying a 360. Since when do video games possess you to the point where you flame others for THEIR decision? That's why I hate fanboys also. I, in fact, like all systems right now and trying to save up for a 360 and a PS3 (360 first, then PS3 next year, Lord Willing) I just hate when people can't accept other people's opinions. If someone wants to buy a 360, then let them do it. If some one wants to buy a PS3, then let them do it. Just because someone gets a system you may not like or care for, doesn't mean you can just call them names and throw a tantrum.
To all my adoring fans who send me hate mail on a daily basis, thank you. It just proves my point that fanboys are scary and prevents most average joes from wanting to post on comment boards like this because of people like you. Oh and get this, every single bit of mail I got since this news story was posted was all hate mail from anti-360 fanboys. I specifically mentioned in most of my comments that I own both a 360 and a PS3 and I love both of them but I just happen to love my 360 a bit more than my PS3 and I explain why. Heck, I even dissed the biggest selling 360 game openly but I still had PS3 fanboys calling me a fanboy out of ignorance (you know who you are). I could've stooped to their level but I didn't. I'm beginning to feel like a broken record but I'll say it again. I love all my consoles, of course there are going to be some I prefer over others, that's just my personal preference. I'm not trying to brag here but I'm trying to explain how I love all games equally, no matter what console they're on.
I really don't care about sales, heck, my favorite game of the year so far was one of the crappiest selling games but you don't see me changing my stance on it. Fanboys also love to give you supposed facts that are downright wrong and they try to make it sound valid by being forceful about it. I love all system but please don't pee on my leg and tell me that it's raining alright, you being ticked off doesn't make lies true. I hate to say this too but most fanboys seem to be on PSN, I get shunned half the time whenever I mention that I have a 360 in a PSN game lobby. All of this is very juvenile and sad but most of you fanboys need to go play some games instead of wasting all of your time constantly dissing people who don't agree with your choices and trying to back up lies with more lies. Lying is unforgivable no matter what the reason and I find it pretty pathetic that you would lie just to try and make one game console look better than the other.
It is my personal opinion that the 360 is better than the PS3, if you like the PS3 better, go you. But when you start acting all childish and start sending people hate mail and just straight out lie because you can't find any other facts to back up your side of the story, then guess what, that makes you pathetic. Some people play games no matter what console they're on, as long as the game is good. Most aren't so petty as to shun a game in particular just because it isn't on their console of choice. If you can't afford said console, then still, please don't bash it until you're more familiar with it. I just got done with a 8 hour session in Wipeout HD on, yes, my PS3 and come online find my inbox stuffed with hate mail from PS3 fanboys, each message being almost identical to the previous one. It'd be fun to block every single childish individual who does this but I don't know about you but I don't find that fun to have to do that on a daily basis. In the past I've even gotten hate mail from 360 fanboys who can't stand when I actually praise the PS3 sometimes for some of the games I like on that platform. I've even gotten full blown hate mail that totally ignores that fact that I own both a 360 and a PS3 and they talk as if I only own one or the other. *sarcasm* Ignorance is a blessing. Thank you fanboys, 360 and PS3 both, for making my GameSpot experience such a pleasant one. *sarcasm*
@xtremeflem2day There are 360 fanboys too who do that, a lot actually. Both sides have their fanboys, don't talk as if it's only on the other console's side. Perhaps you weren't saying so, but you sure made it sound like so-. The reason Splinter Cell will most likely be better on PC visually, is because most games are. PCs are user-upgradable, allowing better parts be installed in them. Besides, when has rating scores ever mattered? They're JUST opinions among with others'. Just because a game gets a good review, or sales. Doesn't mean it appeals to you, you have to try it out yourself to find out, however scores can "help" out knowing how many other people have liked the game. Splinter Cell Conviction will probably end up on PS3 later, just like how Double Agent did. You can't say it's impossible, because a lot of unpredicted stuff has happened.
now obviously as people post unbiased comments, stating either console's flaws/benefits, ps3 fanboys will mark it down, because they want to believe that they have the best. and with my past experience with ps3 fanboys, i know that they will start calling me a fanboy, even though i never said the 360 is better than ps3, which its not. PS3 is fine, but the fanboys are jokes
@ AlfaxD_Centauro: what makes you say splinter cell on PC will be better on 360? Because you're jealous? send me the link that proves the graphics are better on PC, and dont forget that most tom clancy games like SCDA, and R6V and R6V2 get better reviews on 360 than on PC. Dont kid yourself.
@sonicmask ¿I'm kidding? ¿Why do you said that? Splinter Cell Conviction will be for PC too, and better graphics than Xbox 360 (sorry, but it is true). Why to re buy an Xbox 360, the game will be for PC, is much better a PC. But this is not the section to discuss that. The subject is PS3 is outselling more than Wii and Xbox 360.
***amatuer analyst time*** Durrrr.... The holiday sales r gonnur be slow b'cozz durrs no gud games cummin out 4 Xmas.
i could care less which console is doing well all i care about is that they keep making great games and this console war between 360 and ps3 is pathetic i just dont see the point in it all
All I know is that I bought my PS3 for its exclusives. I didn't buy a 360 because of its exclusives.
i tend to use sony for thier very few exclusives that are outstanding, ie: valkyria chronicles (awesome game get it) uncharteds, and thier unusual downloadables: flower, locoroco, pain, and comet crash. thats about where it ends for me. any multiplatform game, any online game, and thier exclusives i get for 360. why? xbox live. sure it probably couldnt handle uncharted 2, but the psn just cant do what live does. anyone who does not own a 360 cannot compare because they wouldnt understand. you get what you pay for, and EVERY online game has a demo. i spend close to $80 a year in bad downloables for psn because i cant trial them first and i 'take a risk' on 360 every downloadable i get is stellar. i try it and i delete it or purchase. the rankings, matchups, eveyone has a mic, friends list, always on connection, its so much more. the wii i appreciate due to it being 'different' and for getting the girls in on gaming but its not my premier system of choice. its a 'time and place' system for me. when i want serious 1 on 1 time with my tv, its 360 or ps3 for me. (more often that not, 360 due to live) all the systems can get along, we can all get along. variety means we, the gamers win. and we can all win, everytime.
witnessed a drop off in console sales toward the end? impact of price drops dropping off so soon? that would mean that sonys much hailed 'comeback' will be short lived. i guess many of the gamers who were 'waiting for the slim' have got one now, back to square 1 till christmas. although i have all 3 systems i still find the console wars facinating. i dont lend my unwavering loyalty to any one megacorporation, i dont think they deserve that from us. i give my loyalty to the industry. all videogames ftw! i just finished uncharted 2 and it was great but salivating over borderlands for friday. i will spend many hours back on xbox live for that one, then dragon age... the wii is gathering dust again in my house since the novelty of motion plus wore off. i still flop it out for the girls to play with when we have parties and gatherings tho. ummmm, perhaps i should edit that...
Colonelx24 is right - I do gab too much. The fanboy statements just keep pullin me in!!! Ratchet & Clank is not the worst game out there - but was not included intentionally. Insomniac games is not where Sony needs to place it's bets with. Repeat after me "Sucker Punch.... and... Naughty Dog" PSN sucks - for an online experience that's to compete with live, they really need to put down the opium and get to work. I guess that's why Sony started to charge game makers for the bandwidth used on their DLC. Imagine that, have a popular game with add-ons and such that people want, and get penailized... That's why the PS3 will never see the likes of Left 4 dead; and DLC for other titles will either come late or not at all to your 'almighty' PSN. If you TRULY don't have a PS3 now, you'll see what I mean when you get one. MS aint doin nothin stellar either. Their full of empty promises and a lackluster approach themselves because they're ahead. However I couldn't stand online play if I had to deal with PSN ONLY. Great Caeser!! However, I said enough (11 or 12 replies full...hell I've lost count) enjoy your night folks. Ultimately, who cares about what I think..right? Let's see what 2010 brings. Adios
You know what Sony!? Good for you. You made a great console remake now bask in your glory and let the money rake in. I own a 360 and am very seriously considering buying a ps3.
@spurgness (sorry @colonelx24 this makes10) "sony has its great games that microsoft can't compete with" ...like what. Let's do a quick rundown of all the Sony exclusives that gamers had an eye out for: Resistance 1 & 2: A halo wanna be with different weapons and WWII characters. This was proven in the Res 2 launch during the '08 holiday season, where it suffered from dissapointing sales (admited by Sony themselves) Metal Gear Solid 4 - You either love or hate this game. It's been a succesful IP since the 80's so it will have it's followers. I'm neutral about this title, but there is nothing in the gameplay that makes it a must have for a majority of gamers Killzone 2 - A tragic mix of incredible graphics (the best I've seen to date on a console) and sloppy development. This game doesn't know if it wants to be Gears of War, Call of Duty or Rainbow Six. The biggest PS3 disappointment to me because it's why I bought the d@mn console Haze - Hah! Which leaves Infamous - Good game. Definitely worth playing. But like a lot of super-hero sandlot's these days, loses it's luster after a few hours and becomes a little repetitive. Yet still a good title And Uncharted - Very innovative and yes is the best exclusive on any console So, except for Uncharted, the MS exclusives (Crack Down, Left 4 Dead, Gears of War, Halo, Mass Effect..) can go toe-to-toe and beyond with this list. Now let's wait and see if GOW and Grand-Turismo can make your statement true.
