Sega bringing three Sonic games to Ouya

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episodes I and II, as well as Sonic CD coming to Android console June 27 for $7 each.

Sega is supporting the upcoming Android-powered Ouya console with one of its biggest franchises: Sonic. The company has told Games Industry International that three Sonic the Hedgehog titles will come to the mini-system on June 27.

The games are Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, and Sonic CD. Each game will be optimized for the Ouya's Tegra 3 processor and will allow gamers to play the title's first levels through the system's "free to try" business model.

The games can be purchased in full for $7 each, above what they cost on iOS and Android.

"Sega is an example of the types of developers that are coming to Ouya. We've always said that because Ouya is open, we lower the barriers for any type of developer, whether it's AAA or a newcomer," Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman told the site.

Sega of America director of mobile business David Zemke was also enthused about the partnership, calling the Ouya "disruptive technology."

"It's fun to see what these technologies can do and be a part of it from the beginning," Zemke said. "For those two reasons alone, we've looked at it as yet another reason to bring some great Sega content to a whole new audience."

Sega joins a long list of developers supporting the Ouya, including Double Fine, Airtight Games, Robotoki, Polytron, and Square Enix.

The Ouya launches publicly on June 25 at Amazon, Best Buy, GAME, GameStop, and Target, as well as through the Ouya online store. Additional controllers can be purchased for $50.

The company recently secured $15 million in new funding on top of the $8.6 million raised through the console's original Kickstarter.

So if I buy an Ouya can I use any games I have already bought on Google play or do I have  to buy them again?  So for example if someone has already bought Sonic 4 on google play to play on their android phone and tablet do they have to buy it again for to play on Ouya?  I am confused about that part.

@toddx77 No you can't. But you can root your console. Just plug it in and in the cmd type

Not too surprising as these games are already available on the Android platform anyways.

Already got all these on PSN so no need to buy another platform to get more of the same stuff.

Interesting. I didn't expect this.

Nice!  I also like the "free to try" policy.  It's a lot more honest and more respectful than "free to play" imho.  Since games need money to survive, without some kind of really lucrative ad-support, I think it's just more practical to just let people know up front how much the developer wants per copy to support themselves.

I looked into getting an OUYA, the problem is it isn't even released yet. At $100, and all the values I want out of a console, I will have to admit I'm tempted... All they need to do is advertise local multiplayer as a core feature in as many games as possible and it would buy an instant buy.

These amazing new exclusives make me want to rush out and buy an Ouya immediately. Said nobody.

Sega is really hating on the PS Vita if they don't want sonic games on it. I know sonic and all stars racing was released on the Vita, but that's not a true sonic game. Having more sonic games like sonic CD would improve the PS Vita's sales a ton.

@sonyfreak456 because sony were once their great rival with the release of the PS2 with crushed the dreamcast (metaphoroly speaking the PS2 IMO was pure garbage)

That is Great news. After the Xbone flipped off the indie market maybe they will support the Oyua who is basically devoted to them. I love seeing some big developers putting some games on it. might draw more people to it.

I have to say as well that it seems this is the best time to join the console war since it seems M$ is planning to commit suicide this gen.

Sega releases these games for a collossal failure like Ouya but not real handheld gaming systems like Vita? I mean the Vita might not be setting the world alight in terms of sales but it's sure as hell more successful than Ouya will ever be. I don't understand the logic of Sega here.

Not that I'd want these games on Vita anyway. I jusy don't understand the logic.

@burgeg They estimated cost and possible income of conversion to Ouya and to Vita. It seems it turned out not too many Vita-owners would be interested to make such an investment. It's about money, not what console they like

padako

@burgeg the games were already on Android and so they just needed to optimize them for Ouya. Sega most likely put very little effort into this since the games were already coded for Android. A Vita release would require more effort. I'm sure that this is the only reason why Sega did this.

Yay more ports!

At least they're not exactly expensive

Redblaze27

So...whats stopping me from just getting the games on another Android device for cheaper?

PETERAKO

@Redblaze27 that ouya has an actuall gamepad and not touch controls which would be dreadful for sonic games.

padako

@PETERAKO @Redblaze27 but can't you just buy a gamepad that links to your phone/tablet via bluetooth?

Perhaps you should seek counseling if you get a sense of insecurity from playing portable games out in public.

@padako yes, of course. pop it out of your pocket and play in public.

thats it this proves the industry is changing and the ps4 and one are no longer relevant

I haven't heard much about the games catalogue for Ouya, everything has been focused on first PS4 and now Xbox One and E3. Maybe we'll even hear something about the Steambox soon.

Oozyrat
Oozyrat

@Hurvl If they do release the Steambox, Roosterteeth (people that make RvB and stuff if you don't know who they are) said that they should release HL3, L4D3, TF3 and Portal 3 with it as exclusives (besides PC of course). Really, who wouldn't buy it if they came out for it? Really hoping they give us some info on it though :)
