Sega announces Valkyria Chronicles browser game

Jonathan Toyad
By Jonathan Toyad, Associate Editor

The new iteration of the strategy RPG will be card based and free to play.

Valkyria Chronicles 3 for the PSP may not see the light of day in English, but gamers can at least get a taste of a new title in the franchise that will launch for the PC. Sega recently announced the next iteration in the strategy RPG series: a browser game called Valkyria Chronicles Duel.

In this new game, players get to build an army consisting of past Valkyria Chronicle characters and weapons that are represented by cards with different values and in-game properties. Users have to develop and fortify their base camp, expand and conquer territory, and fight off the opposition represented by 3D character battles akin to past titles on the PS3 and PSP.

The game will be free to play and will consist of a microtransaction system involving items. Interested parties can check it out and sign up for a user test session held from today until June 25. There is currently no mention of a release date for this game.

@MidNightStrikes It really is disappointing that there is no English version for the third game.  I also can't read Japanese and I only understand simple Japanese talks.

@BenFireFox Because no one bought the PSP games. People bought Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and it got an HD version. In Valkyria Chronicles' case, however...

I'm very curious to hear your reasoning on how SEGA killed off Mega Man. Please share your insight. :D

@shadow-crow someone ought to tell you that capcom owns megaman... how sega even comes into the equation is beyond me... is your avatar for ironic effect?

To those of you who are defending this particular decision, and decisions that Sega have made such as making a PSP sequel to the first Valkyria Chronicles: Before you tell people they made the right decision maybe you should look into it a little more. Go to vgchartz.com and look at the sales. Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3 sold 1.03 million copies. This compared to 460,000 copies for the PSP sequel. Regardless of development costs being cheaper I'm pretty sure the added sales for a PS3 sequel would have negated that and could have been an even bigger success. Also the first game sold 620,000 copies in North America alone. This should be a hint for companies that make Japanese RPGs. If you make them, and they are good, we will buy them. Not only will we buy them, but it is quite likely you will sell more in NA than in Japan. This isn't the first time SEGA has made a bad decision. Hopefully they will learn. Free to play isn't the worst option, but quality often suffers and single player modes are usually non-existent or not very good. Hopefully in the future this will change. I would hate to see a world full of free to play with games that aren't as good.

@Melchioruss I've looked into it already. I could just say 'lol VGChartz' and be done with it, but I have to add that VGChartz doesn't record digital sales and sales of the PS3 game picked up only when the PSP game's Japanese version was already in development.

If you want to play this game I wrote a small tutorial teaching how to register.

I'd still play it, as long as it were available in (readable) English.

That's too bad. One of the few series that actually had some creativity.

It was a little too... anime, at times (The pig...) but overall it had a very mature and well presented storyline. I mean, I can't think of many other games, if any, that touch on mass racial imprisonment and outright genocide.

It's sad that this series has gone so far from the States. It's one of the most unique RPG series from Japan in this day and age, and sadly it just doesn't have a big audience in the US. Loved the first and second game and had greatly wished the third game would have made it here. I am hoping that, at some point, they will re-release all three games for the PS3. I would definitely buy that.

I loved this series. First it went from PS to PsP, then it's not even translated anhymore, now it becomes a browser based card game. Same with Monster Hunter, how can such great franchises just wither and die outside of Japan?

Drakillion
Drakillion like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@trollkind Probably just different taste. I live here in the United States and unless the game is Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and Monster Hunter Legend of Zelda, the new Smash Bros. I hardly hear hype of games made from Japan, unless it's on a game forum anyway.

Plus, Valkyria Chronicles didn't sell well in the Unites States unfortunately and that caused SEGA to rethink its strategy. They wanted the series to go on but due to poor sales and a smaller budget, they transferred it to a handheld to save costs.

Pathetic.I never played a Valkyria Chronicles game before, but getting the "browser treatment" is like giving your own franchise the middle finger.

Social games are becoming really popular in Japan. There is a lot of new social games like Final Fantasy Brigade SNK Dream Battle, Tales of Card Evolve and this one coming this year. I think I`ll give Valkyria Chronicles Duel a try.

@arkno Don't rush them. I'd rather the next Valkyria game spend years in development and turn out great like every other game in the series rather than become the next Call of Duty.

Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3 is one of the most overlooked games this console generation. On the surface it seems like just another JRPG but its much more than that. Give it a try!

It's really nice that they're making a new way of playing a great series. No offense, but the people ranting about this are idiots. It's a spin-off, free, and no one is twisting their arms to play it if they don't want to. Negative reception even before release is what killed the series in the west. Kinda hilarious that when VC2 was getting localized everyone was hating on it but when VC3 wasn't everyone wanted it. Kinda sad that a series this great gets hated on just because Sega makes a decision to keep themselves from dying - in Japan people actually buy their gamesand they can't please everyone. :(

Besides, this spin-off looks great. I hope it gets an English release.

Sigh so we get the Kingdom hearts treatment, no main line sequels, just shoddy spinoffs.
