Sean Astin appearing in Video Games: The Movie

Lord of the Rings star and "huge gamer" to be featured in upcoming documentary.

Lord of the Rings, Rudy, and The Goonies star Sean Astin will appear in the upcoming documentary Video Games: The Movie, director Jeremy Snead has announced.

"Sean and I have been in touch for the past year and I have given him occasional updates on our film," Snead said in an update to the film's Kickstarter page. "Sean is a huge gamer and has wanted to be a part of Video Games: The Movie from the beginning but his filming schedule hasn't allowed it...until now."

Astin joins a host of developers, executives, and celebrities appearing in the film, including former Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski, Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, and Star Trek actor Wil Wheaton, among many others.

Video Games: The Movie is being brought to life through crowd funding, first through Indiegogo and most recently via a successful post-production Kickstarter campaign. At press time, the movie's Kickstarter stands at $91,140 from 854 backers with 12 days to go.

The film aims to highlight many hot-button topics, including the link between video games and real-world violence, games as art, next-generation trends, and stereotypes that "plague" the industry.

Even though it's probably not something that would interest me, I have to say, that's pretty cool for a low-budget kickstarter campaign :)

I won't be able to not hear "Mr. Frodo" at the end of everything he says.

Wil Wheaton and the guy who played Sam Gamgee...not exactly a big budget operation.

Every bit helps. Gaming still doesn't have nearly enough credit entertainment, industry, (yes) art, etc.-wise. I love books, movies and music. Its about time V-Games got some equal recognition.

I really hope this nets us some sort of open-world RPG based on Encino Man.

Interesting. Like to see how this turns out. I wonder how long the film will be? It might make $100K at least. I'm sure they will put in stuff from this years E3.

@rktPYZQShWz  Yeah, when Frodo left town Sam found gaming to be more fun than playing cheerleader and crutch for his special friend.  :)
