Scribblenauts Unmasked announced

Latest entry in the Scribblenauts series set in the DC Universe; coming to Wii U, 3DS, and PC this fall.

Warner Bros. has announced Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure, a crossover between the puzzle platformer and the DC Universe.

The game--which was rumoured to exist back in April--will be released in fall 2013 for the Wii U, 3DS, and PC and is being developed by series stewards 5th Cell.

Screenshots for the game show Scribblenauts protagonist Maxwell interacting with numerous DC characters in various locations, including Wayne Manor's laundry room (complete with bat-clad washing machines). Batman's batcave, Superman's Fortress of Solitude, and the Green Lantern homeworld Oa are also shown.

Batman villains Bane, Killer Croc, Harley Quinn, Two Face, Riddler, Joker, and Penguin are also shown alongside the Dark Knight, Robin, Superman, and Wonder Woman. Screenshots also show off lesser-known DC characters like Kyle Rayner, Professor Zoom, and Black Flash.

The trailer for the game, embedded below, also shows players customising their own heroes and villains, with Superman antagonist Doomsday retooled in a new costume to fight crime.

Scribblenauts games have been released every year since 2009, with last year's Scribblenauts Unlimited featuring Nintendo characters Mario, Link, and Zelda in the Wii U version of the game.

At the start of this month, Scribblenauts was accused of infringing on the trademarks of meme creators Charles Schmidt and Christopher Orlander Torres, creators of Keyboard Cat and Nyan Cat respectively. 5th Cell and Warner Bros. are accused of "shamelessly" using the memes to promote Scribblenauts titles and are seeking unspecified damages as compensation.

Warner Bros. is no stranger to using the DC universe in other games and has published two Lego Batman games in the past. The publisher also recently released the DC brawler Injustice: Gods Among Us, and is readying a release of Batman: Arkham Origins for later in 2013. A DC MOBA, Infinite Crisis, is also due for release in 2013.

Great use of the license. I hope they add some clever puzzles and not just brute force ones :)

At the end of the trailer... the characters can talk? That's an improvement.

Will it still support adjectives?  Can we combine, say..."naked" with "catwoman"? ^_^

I'm surprised they went with Kyle Raynor (though he's my favorite GL).  Aside from Hal Jordan who is most well known, they usually go with John Stewart for these kinds of things (probably to fill the racial equality quota).

I would get this for the 3DS only if it has the item customization in it. I was angry that the last game only had that for the Wii U and the PC version.

I am usually against yearly franchises, but this one keeps making great updates each year.

Does anyone notice that Two-Face's burnt side is on the right and not the left?

@braindeadgamer The way the games mechanics work, all characters simply mirror the same model when they face the other way. In other words, if Two-Face was facing right, his burnt side suddenly be on his left. ;)

It could be good, or it could be bad. Scribblenouts was an interesting game, so adding DC characters to it could make it more interesting.

meh...

Scribblenauts was only fun for a few hours and this new one is not hardcore DC enough to catch a fan's interest.

I'm tired of these series since the first game. Took me about a couple hours to hand it down, the worlds are way too long and levels become repetitive after a while... I don't see how putting super heroes in it could improve the formula.

Time to buy a wii u ... !! lol...

@AzatiS Why would you buy a Wii U just for this when this game is available on PC.

It ain't Crysis 3, anyone with a decent GPU can run this.

Ever since the first, the grapple gun is still the best.

I was LITERALLY watching one PewDiePie's Scribblenauts Unlimited videos and thinking about how awesome DC characters would be in the game 2 MINS AGO!!!

I don't understand, why not PS3 and 360, the combined installed base is huge

@Gamer_4_Fun Because those 8-year-old consoles are irrelevant now :D

@jhonMalcovich Pat yourself at the back for the most ignorant dumbass comment of the month, if not the year. You think PS3 and 360 can't handle a simple game like Scribblenauts? You think the combined install base of almost 100 million is irrelevant? Go f*** yourself.

@Gamer_4_Fun@jhonMalcovichYeh ? And how many of those 100M players will actually buy the game and not steal it.

@Gamer_4_Fun  Most people doesent have keyboards connected to them, and the game i guess is about typing alot.   PC is the best place for scribblenauts

As much as I'm happy that this is getting released on the Wii U and the 3DS, I don't understand why it isn't coming to other platforms. Maybe it'll come to the new platforms at the end of the year.

@AndCarlsen Pretty sure it will be on the PC as well.  However, it could never work without a keyboard.  It would be an exercise in frustration.

Maybe I just don't understand it because I don't play Scribblenauts, but I thought the point of the games was that you could create stuff in them.  With this game having a singular DC superhero theme, I wonder if anyone else finds this to be limiting to the concept.

Stebsis
Stebsis

@Ovirew Not limiting, more like expanding because you get to create all the stuff you previously could, but now you can also create superheroes

Ovirew
Ovirew like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Stebsis Yeah but couldn't you create superheroes and pretty much anything else you could think up before?

You know, maybe I'm getting this series a bit mixed up with Drawn to Life.  Both games looked similar to me.  Anyway, I guess it's the same concept?

TohouAsura
TohouAsura

@Ovirew @Stebsis NO. You could create a single type of generic Superhero.

With this game, Warner Bros uses the license of DC comics to bring about ALOT more of that genre, rather than just being represented with a single object.

rushiosan
rushiosan

@Stebsis @Ovirew Sure you can create any superheroes - well, at least those under licensing restrictions...

@Ovirew I guess with this you can sorta create your fan fantasies or something like that. They are giving the DC characters to you to do what you want.
