Sales of 3DS reach 5 million in US

Nintendo touts new sales milestone for new portable in America, claims it holds 75 percent market share among portables; 3DS sells 155,000 in June, Wii tallies 95,000 consoles, Ocarina of Time 3D goes platinum.
The 3DS has now sold 5 million units in the United States, Nintendo has announced, citing figures provided by industry tracking group NPD. The system went on sale in the US during March 2011.
Nintendo also called out other US sales milestones for the month of June, including news that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D has now sold more than 1 million units. It joins Super Mario 3D Land (2.1 million units) and Mario Kart 7 (1.75 million units) in tallying sales of over 1 million copies.
Nintendo also said that for a second month running, the firm held a 75 percent market share for portable hardware in the US. Additionally, Nintendo said it sold more than 400,000 total hardware units in June, seeing double-digit growth across its product lines over May's figures.
According to Nintendo, in June it sold more than 155,000 3DS units, 150,000 DS family units, and almost 95,000 Wii consoles in the US. Microsoft's Xbox 360 console was the best-selling current-generation system in June, moving 257,000 units during the month.

Nice. Sells will go up even more this holiday season with other titles that should be out by then.
Glad to see that the 3DS will not be the end of the DS series like was originally planned
lol funny how all the fanboys proclaim that handhelds are "just better" and that they still sell well....Cigarettes sell well too, doesn't mean they're any good.

1 Like Look we get it you like Angry Birds all because some of us think it is overrated dosn't mean we don't like it because it's popular if anything I find the game kind if boring after 3+ hours of playing and that is only the demo at my local wal-mart. And good for you it is free on your iphone but you know what? There is an old saying that says "you get what you pay for" and quite frankly comparing 3DS sales to Angry Birds or any other game on the iphone is just a excuse just to troll. so go back to playing Angry Birds and leave all of us who paid for quality entertainment alone.
I like my 3DS. Unfortunately there just isn't anything I want to play on it right now. Other than Spirit Camera, which is due for near the end of the year, nothing is really standing out to me at the moment.
And in a year Nintendo will be releasing another new handheld system. THE 3DDS! Followed 3 months later by the 3DDS+ with TWO NEW COLORS! With all new, but exactly the same mario games they have been releasing for years. Either way good for them, they are making money which is more than I can say about Vita :P
Great to see this. I knew the Nintendo 3DS had a lot of potential and turned out to be a great system. It had a slow start, but it eventually picked up last year and this year. Great job, Nintendo, for this system. Keep up the great work. :D
2 Like Ah, those fools that thought the 3DS was doomed to fail, how I pity them....sort of. If you don't have one, you need to get one. You don't know impressive until you see 3D gaming.
Love the 3ds. Mostly cause of Zelda, Mario 3d Land and Resident Evil. Needs more games faster though. How about an FPS. Skyrim spin off? Banjo Kazooie? And for the love of Pete nintendo! Give your fans what they ask for on the eshop before they start hacking their systems to get SNES and GBA games!

That game looks fun and addicting! That game will surely sell more consoles I bet.
Here is some title I would love to see Super Castlevania 4 , Super Mario 3, Super Mario World and Super Metroid.

Seriously. Two weeks ago I was in the market for a handheld, either vita or 3ds. Keeping up with e3 and these forums, it was an easy choice.
Not keen on the Vita myself I thought the DS was a little awkward to hold, but the Vita!!! the analogue sticks are entirely the wrong place, it makes it so awkward to play :(
The funny thing is that the Vita really does have the capabilities to play amazing games, it's just the way Sony is marketing the Vita, especially the games coming out for it with the biggest titles primarily being home console ports which would probably play (and be more fun) better on the home console. I remember this one annoying Playstation editor on IGN ragging on the 3DS for having N64 remakes and now look at the Vita. At least Nintendo took the time to completely redo the games, especially since these are games from 15 years ago.

3 Like @emperiox What broken ones? Hadn't heard there was a problem. Other than a few dead pixels, but every handheld went through that. Oh, I get it.... You hate the system and can't find a real reason to bash it so you made one up. You should have just gone with the "So 5 million parents bought a toy for their kids" line, you get a lot more people on your bandwagon that way.
@FallenOneX I bought my 3ds only a couple weeks after launch and it's still doing fantastically without a single problem... as opposed to me iphone which started having problems only a couple months after I got it.

And to confirm that you're a moron, when you replace a system, it doesn't count as a sale because unless you broke it yourself like an idiot, if it's the company's fault, they'll replace it free of charge.
Plus this is ONLY US sales, worldwide is over 15m.
1 Like 5 million is pretty underwhelming for a Nintendo portable in the U.S. market for a year and a half. Maybe portable gaming really is dying off. this is Nintendo's bread and butter. If the 3DS fails, they will not survive.
You're right about underwhelming sales. But I think the 3DS was designed for Japan, and it's doing great over here. I think we're still along way off from Nintendo going the way of Sega though. It may happen, but not this decade. Not worldwide anyway.
10 Like That's more than the DS sold in the same amount of time, if anything, the 3DS is still showing how strong the portable market is.
The only reason I bought the 3DS was for Animal Crossing 3DS, and they never gave me a release date. ;(
Aww....I thought it was supposed to be this summer? It just keeps getting pushed back. :P
Yeah, I think because Animal Crossing is expected to be a huge hit for the 3DS (especially with the StreetPass feature) so I'm guessing that Nintendo is really trying to polish it up to ensure it's an amazing game. I never got Animal Crossing before but I might get this upcoming one.

@moviequest14 I have pre-ordered, I've got Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2, Birth by Sleep and 358/2 days, so I'm going to start playing them for the first time this week to get ready for DDD
Has anyone checked out the Nintendo E-Shop? Lots of really great and fun titles on there. As far as other games, we do need more RPG's to play. A Call of Duty game would be nice as well. For now, LOZ: Ocarina of Time, Devil Survivor and Tales of the Abyss will keep me busy.
1 Like To add to my last comment. For all you Fire Emblem lovers, play Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Shadow Wars for now. Great launch title and was an unexpected killer launch title. Street Fighter 4 will be the better fighting title. Mario titles are fun while they last. Not much in the way for sport titles other than soccer and football. Ace Combat is super for a flight simulator. There are plenty of great titles to choose from depending on what genre you like.
My DS Lite started falling apart on me from at least 5 yrs of heavy use. The left shoulder button doesn't work anymore, my start switch is stuck, and the screen hinge is cracked. Because of this I just got a 3ds so I can play my games once again. I haven't really seen many games I want for it yet because like other people were saying. There isn't really any rpgs on it yet.
@Jarten lol that's probably the main reason I'd buy a 3DS right now (but I won't cause my DS is still hanging on for dear life)
Yeah. It definitely wasn't easy for me to shelf it. I basically had taken it almost everywhere when leaving the house. Hopefully the 3ds will last as long for me.

@GunBladeHero ;P I just (personally) am not a fan of Nintendo's flagship franchises (except for FE) and I don't really see anything else that Nintendo has nowadays......I'll keep my black DSi and be happy playing the best handheld console every made (IMO)
