Philadelphia Phillies slugger named as cover athlete for Sony's annualized MLB franchise, coming to the PS3, PS2, PSP in spring 2008.
One of the primary tweaks Sony made to its annualized MLB: The Show baseball franchise last year was to the game's pitching mechanics. That's good, because pitchers will need to be on the top of their game to counter Philadelphia Phillies' all-star slugger Ryan Howard, named today as the cover athlete for MLB 08: The Show.
Howard finished the 2007 season with 47 home runs, 136 runs batted in, and a hitting average of .268. Howard's performance helped him set the record for fastest player to reach 100 home runs. Ryan counts several other distinctions to his name, including being the second player to win the Rookie of the Year (2005) and Most Valuable Player (2006) awards in successive seasons.
MLB 08: The Show is expected to arrive for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable this spring. Sony's focus this season will be amping up authenticity, and as such the game maker will be including more than 3,000 individual player animations. Traditionally a hallmark of the series, the batting mechanics will also be revisited, with Sony implementing hot and cold streaks that affect a slugger's potential, among other updates.
Other features set to be included in the game are umpire personalities, adaptive pitching intelligence, and commentary from Rex Huddler, Matt Vasgerian, and Dave Campbell. Online play will also return this season, with league play for up to 30 teams, an MLB score ticker, and the new SCOUT feature, which lets players store their online preferences and set up a quick-match option that searches for players with similar partialities.
"Howard on the cover? really? Also, baseball isn't just about power...200 k's and .268 average? I'd rather see holliday who batted .340...now thats baseball." martyman19828 you are just sore my man J-Roll won MVP. Go Phillies
ryan howard nailed 58 home run 148RBI and batted .288 in his second year to win MVP. he only start for half season for his rockies year when all star Jim thomes injured and still managed to slam 28 HR, and win roockie of the year. plus he only make 145k a year compare to $10+millions of other player. i dont think anyone deserve it more than him.
I'm glad that Sony is sharing the love all the way across the current PlayStation line (all three systems). I wonder what features will be lost or added on each version of the game. (I'm hard pressed to think they'll all be functionally equivalent.)
Thats manny ramirez guys. 24 for the Red Sox know your facts. Red Sox wear white at home so notice the jersey's before you post.
"nklslinde21 and Gamespot are both wrong. The player shown in the screen shot is David Ortiz, aka "Big Pappi". Ryan Howard plays for the Phillies and the screen shot is of Fenway Park, the location of the Boston RedSox" personally i dont remember the last time ortiz batted right handed or wore number 24. Howard on the cover? really? Also, baseball isn't just about power...200 k's and .268 average? I'd rather see holliday who batted .340...now thats baseball.
I love Howard but they should of put Jimmy Rollins. The guy can hit, run the bases and is one of the best SS in the game. He is The Show.

I still burning the hell out of my MLB 07: The Show for my PSP. I'm in my 10th season in my career mode & I won't stop playing it till 08 comes out. Was the PS3 version any good? If I pick up a PS3 this year, I might want MLB 08 for it.
The only relevant star of baseball right now is HGH. What a gas to see that on the cover of this game!
Easlily last years best baseball game. Looking forward to this season. This game also should have been at least nominated this year for best sports game.
ok heres something i dont understand, i know he has 47 homeruns sure, but he struck out 200 times this season, thats a new record for most strikeout in a season, why put a guy that did that bad, now i would like to see a player from the west cost, i mean its been an east coast player for the last 4 or 5 years now, or maybe put a pitcher on the cover, like fransisco rodriguez, or john lacky, trevor hoffman, jason shmit, someone, i dont even care if it was a-rod, he actually did something this season, 50 some homers, not freakin 200 strikeouts in a season, i'm an angels fan, and i dont like the yankees, hell, i hate them, but put someone that actually did the most this season, or jimmy rollins, put an mvp on the cover, or a record setter, and not one that sets records that you dont want, LIKE STRIKEOUTS IN A SEASON FOR A BATTER , seriously, no disrespect to the east coast, but its always the yankees, red sox, mets all around that area, when was the last time they put a west coast team player on the cover, someone please answer that, whatever, hopefully next year it'll be a better player, now dont get me wrong, ryan howard's a good player, but he strikesout alot
This will be my first PS3 Baseball game, can't wait! From what I have heard about this game in past, it seems like I will enjoy it a TON.
No disrespect to Ryan Howard but how about the flashiest player in baseball? A-Rod should have been on the cover.
Since I started playing " The Show" a couple years ago, I believe it's the most complete and realistic baseball sim. This will be a release day purchase for me. Go Cubbies!!
I love The Show and I love the Braves... which is why it's a bitter-sweet feeling that, for a second year in a row, they pick one of our team's cover rivals. Oh well...
Ryan Howard is a great choice for a cover athlete. He's young, powerful, productive, and a great person all around. I like this pick, and I hope this game as well as Ryan do well over the next year.
Nice that another athlete from my hometown is again gracing a game cover...now if only one of our teams can actually win a championship.
