Grand Theft Auto studio cements ties to Massachusetts-based developer of Bully: Scholarship Edition, Empire Earth II.
Despite a rash of show-stopping crash bugs in the Xbox 360 edition of Bully, Rockstar Games was apparently pleased with the port job performed by Mad Doc Software. The Grand Theft Auto developer today announced that it has acquired the studio and renamed it Rockstar New England. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Before handling the Xbox 360 port of Bully, Mad Doc developed Star Trek: Legacy for the PC and Xbox 360, as well as PC games like the real-time strategy game Empire Earth II, and the Dungeon Siege expansion Legends of Aranna. The studio has also created its own game engine and AI middleware solutions.
Rockstar did not announce what its new branch's first project would be, but Mad Doc founder and Rockstar New England studio head Dr. Ian Lane Davis said in a statement that the team is "eager to bring our expertise to bear in the character-driven, open-world stories that make Rockstar Games titles so uniquely compelling."
Cool that gives EA another company to put out of work when they take over. I hope this is a hint that Take2 isn't going to give in to EA's buy out.
good for them. if they buy up some other good mid major companies, they probably look to save themselves from being taken over
Maybe Take Two and R* are trying to rival EA instead of being gobbled up by them...this would be fantastic in my opinion. And not because I'm an EA hater...I love a whole lot of EA games. I just want some competition so we all get better games!
@ cowman_53 Really because I'm from Pennsylvania and I always considered it Mid-Atlantic because that is what the schools around here always told us.
So far. this company has had a pretty poor track record but I hope they'll improve. They'll probably make a PC port of "Bully", which is good news. Maybe Rockstar is just trying to make itself bigger, so it would be harder for EA to swallow it?
I wonder what kind of game Rockstar would have made out of the fallout license that Beth bought. R's open world, do anything seemed perfect for Fallout. I hope this will slow EA's Blitzkrieg through the gaming world.
Nintendo_Ownes7, Pennsylvania is in New England... For all of the Glitches Bully has had I really did enjoy it. I think that if Mad Doc will have time to complete their projects they will make some really great stuff.
You know what would be awesome, amazing,,,and a killer laugh?? If rockstar(2k) all of a sudden becomes this hugeeee developer after another big IP they come out with aside from gta....and they buy out EA..hahahaha...Id enjoy that.
Rockstar. Rockstar. Rockstar. EA just leave rockstar alone. Do anything you want but never buy off creativity with money.
Maddoc is often rushed into making games maybe being part of rockstar will give them an oppurtunity to do better games if only rockstar had the star trek licence :( legacy 2 would be around the corner
Wow thats strange, after the laggy, messy port of Bully I almost expect a "bye Mad Doc, youve had your shot and you blew it" kind of attitude. I was under the impression the engine for Bully was written from the ground up by Mad Doc, and while there was no doubt a lot of legacy ps2 code unoptimised for the xbox (and a fair bit of gta3 code if you look around at the bugs like people doing 3 point turns in the middle of the road) it still ran very badly imo. Id like to see what they can do from scratch, but buying them seems unnecessary imo.
Mad Doc are quality development team, and a very creative one. One that definitely goes along with the creativity of people working at Rockstar (no matter which of their offices). Good move by R*. I am looking forward to hearing more news on the first project Rockstar New England will be working on. Good luck!
@DocGonzo1971 I'm sorry but I have to say this Ben Franklin wasn't from New England he was Pennsylvanian. Now that that is out of the way I do picture something like that but not Ben Franklin more like Samual Adams or some other famous New Englander.
I want more Star Trek! Legacy was weak :-/ And the german Sync was pure suckage... not even the sync voices from the original cast :ugly:
After my experience playing Bully (360) with all the performance issues I can't see anything good coming from this deal. At least now I know to be cautious, or just avoid anything made by Rockstar New England.
Rockstar could've done better than acquiring Mad doc, it is my hope that they fire most of the programmers at the former Mad Doc, and replace them with better programmers. Star Trek: Legacy was never completed, choose either the X360 or PC they both sucked chrome off a bumper. Bully had bugs in it that should've never been there, and most of their other titles lacked any major support from them. I really hope Mad Doc doesn't bring their "expertise" to if they do Rockstar will learn how to profoundly suck wind like a hoover.
Starcraft is still consider to be the best of the old games I have friends that still play it. Xbox 360 has to many issues to count of its the truth deal with it people. Anyways its good to hear rockstar is growing I've always found them to be a company that pushes it to the limit when it comes to grapic violence but I've never found it to be a bad thing.
Ususally PC games have a much longer shelf life than any console game. I dont see peole still playing much halo2 online or rainbow six vegas .... i still see people playing massive amounts of CS 1.6 and Quake 3 along with VERY old MMOs and might i say warcraft 2 diablo2 and starcraft ...
theonlyGAMESTER Why would they make only pc games? They can make far more money producing console titles.
Angelcage...I wouldn't worry about Take Two or Rockstar selling out...worry about their stockholders selling to EA when they are buying it for twice what it's worth! That is how they are trying to get Rockstar since they rejected their bid.
Rockstar's acquisition of Mad Doc is a risky one if their focus is to use them for console games. Bully was one major screw up on Mad Doc's part. Hopefully they designate them on computer game design only. This will not detract EA from purchasing Take-Two... This deal is very irrelevant to them. This might even drop take two's stock down in price. EA will most likely acquire take two sometime in 2009. They might just purchase them, downsize the 2k devision, and take a hand's off approach. You have to be stupid to think EA would kill the money making franchises.
So... if EA want buy take two... and take two owns rockstar.... and the only thing in the world ea wants is rockstar.... and now rockstar is BUYING Mad Doc and renamed it Rockstar New England... then... ... Maybe the EA proposal is permantly in the trash bin.... This made my day and weekend!!!!!!!!
