Rock Band 3 to tickle the ivories?

Alex Sassoon Coby

Final screen of Green Day: Rock Band demo shows teaser for Rock Band 3; keyboards, three-part harmonies strongly hinted at.

Source: The Green Day: Rock Band demo launched today on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

What we saw: On exiting the demo for Green Day: Rock Band, gamers are presented with a couple of screens of ads to encourage full-game purchases. The final one (pictured below) seems to be a teaser for the upcoming Rock Band 3, with a number of the series' trademark icons next to a numeral 3. Alongside those for guitar, bass, and drums is one featuring three microphones and one that seems to represent a keyboard. The multi-mic logo points to the inclusion of three-part harmony vocals in the next game, a carryover from last year's Beatles: Rock Band, but the keyboard icon is a bit more surprising.

Keyboard peripherals have long been rumoured for both the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises. Speaking in 2009, Harmonix cofounder Alex Rigopulos said the possibility for adding a keyboard was being examined, but was "a maybe."

Earlier than that, in August 2008, Neversoft project director Brian Bright said, "A keyboard controller deserves to be introduced with its own game. This is something we're thinking about." While Keyboard Hero was trademarked by Activision in May 2006, a Hero-branded keyboard game has yet to emerge.

"There are reasons why we haven't included a keyboard controller," Bright said at the time. "Not all of our songs have keyboard parts, so we didn't want someone to come into a game, pick up the keyboard controller, and then have nothing to do in any of the songs that are selected. We wanted a big mix of music in World Tour, and adding a keyboard controller would either have limited our choices, or the players'."

The official story: EA reps had not responded to requests for comment at press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Almost certainly not bogus. The icon in the teaser image definitely shows a keyboard and refers to Rock Band 3, and while official confirmation has yet to be made, it is a very strong indication from EA that a keyboard peripheral is coming in time for the holidays.

CSP2009 i know region coding is everywhere however a lot of 360 games are region free and it is mainley EA Games that are coded because EA are scum. as far as dvd players go most have a code to unlock them to be region free well all the good ones do. region coding is wrong. whenever they do it they are out of order

@elusivemelody: I have played both. I'm by no means much good at a real guitar, but it's a moot point, since now we know what the keyboard will look like.

I hope double instruments are made official, (as in your avatar can be playing drums and singing at the same time) like Ringo for some of the Beatles songs.

mcr35353 5 pts

can't just be me thinking pendulum could be good in rock band now? admittedly I mainly want the drums, but surely now they've got all the instruments they'd need for them, why not?

mustained13 5 pts

Now will Hey Jude, Let it Be, and some other keyboard-oriented songs be released for Beatles Rock Band?

Indiscrimi 5 pts

A thought occurs: They could actually put classical music in now. The guitar controller is about the right size to be a violin, and the three part harmony could be like a chior....Wait, no one likes classical music besides me. Nevermind. That's a bad idea. This is Rock Band!

Indiscrimi 5 pts

Yes! Just being a vocalist is so boring. I finally have something to else to do when I'm playing with the rest of my band.

metroid1340 5 pts

maybe they'll put in some Beatles songs with piano in them

Rock Band 3 special edition: So many instruments it drives the price up to where you have to choose to either buy the game or pay your car note.

IM SO EXCITDED NOW!! Keyboard=The Doors Hellll yeaaa!!

soniksmybro 5 pts

So does this mean finally including The Doors & Santana?! Most likely it will include Coldplay....ugh! I hate Coldplay!

MissObvious 5 pts

Keyboard would be fun, but in addition to the obvious song selection issue, isn't this going to make the bundle cost like a million dollars? :/

AStriegel75 5 pts

Counting Crows and Ben Folds are a couple more.

AStriegel75 5 pts

For Xbox it's only 4 things too. Honestly though when you have people over no one wants to sing.

GHK98 5 pts

Wait, for the Wii, you would be missing one band member at a time. There are only 4 Wiimotes. The keyboard thing sounds good, though.

I wonder if anyone is actually going to buy the GreenDay one. It hasn't got any attention at all, and it is releasing very soon.

Elvis4576 5 pts

by keyboard i hope they mean theyll add some good piano songs as well

requul1 5 pts

@anthonycg Songs that would be good for a keyboard besides jump? How about almost every NIN song, A few who songs, and Boston... Just to name a few.

requul1 5 pts

I know its too much to hope for, but how about retroactive song upgrades for your current DLC to support these new features... Oh wait I'm a customer? You want me to buy my songs all over again? I'll just be getting ready to bend over.

So.... when is a song list going to come out.

@ Austin907 read my comment again "This and fing Activison with Cod it what killing the game industry ....sad." Even though i am not a huge fan of halo , people still look forward to it story , rock band has nothing , it just different music with a better color of gloss over it. I mean 2 rock band coming close to each other that over doing it in my book. With the DLC albums Harmonix has is there really a need for a Green Day game -_-? The music genre just a sad joke and i for one hopes it goes the way of the Tony Hawks games.

falconclan 5 pts

Better have some Rammstein, I wanna be Flake dammit.

Guys, there are 5 Rock Bands now. The first one came out almost 3 years ago. Considering the two band specific are expansion backs, and even counting AC/DC, it's a franchise with a lot of steam left. Franchises are here to stay. A developer is not gonna make millions off one game and then go make a new, independent title. This has gone on since the NES, nothing new. I don't see you complaining about the new Halo or CoD MW2 doing it, and the frequency of those is horrible these days.

Spincut 5 pts

OMG, I almost freaked out when I saw the headline. I have been waiting for them to add a keyboard, as that is the instrument I had been pondering learning the past couple years. The other stuff seemed cool, but I just never got into video game key-tauring on a guitar peripheral (same goes for the mic for sure and even the drums). However, this could be a big turning point. I just hope I didn't miss out on anything cool from the previous 2 Rock Bands and Guitar Hero songwise (since I did really dig some of the special 80's stuff they did and have done). Also P.S. I totally had been saying to everyone I know that they should have added a piano peripheral over the past several years....feels like they stole my idea :P .

Rock Band Stevie Wonder. It also comes with blacked out shades..

Ninja-Hippo 5 pts

this seems like the opposite of the new guitar hero, which is going back to a little more guitar-centric. I'm not sure if the whole band idea really worked out.

Sk8rlink 5 pts

Whoever is hating, stop, RB2 was a few years ago, the other 2, The beatles and the other lousy band that did not deserve a RB game, are expansions, but this will be a full fledged game, 2-3 years of developing means nothing but a above average game, my only hope is that keyboard is kinda extra, keyboard killed rock during the 80's hope it doesnt kill RB...

Pat_Dude 5 pts

I'm expecting a 1-octave keyboard with 7, MAYBE 8 "white" keys to pull off the 2 C keys, and 5 "black" ones. They'll be colored from Red -> indigo in the order of rainbow colours and the "black" ones'll be darker versions of the keys which they are "flatting/sharping". In-game, the black ones will have their own lane, but'll look like "Tap" (Pull-off/Hammer-on) notes. I'm probably wrong, but we'll see at E3.

Killer2401 5 pts

If you told me 10 years ago that you could play guitar in a video game, I would have laughed at how impossible it sounded. I think we ought to have faith that Harmonix knows how to put a keyboard in their game...just expect it to be limited...like guitar.

DaSlyOne 10 pts

Next up...Rock Band: Billy Joel, Rock Band: Elton John and Rock Band:Styx. I want the Cartman version of "Come Sail Away" though, just like they did the Cartman version of "Poker Face".

sabrewulf1880 5 pts

Keytar. Don't forget about keytars, people.

anthonycg 5 pts

Keyboard would be good for that Van Halen song "Jump" but I can't think of many awesome keyboard solos.

apollo333 5 pts

A keyboard is a horrible idea! How in the world are notes (and chords) going to scroll down the screen like the other parts? Or are they gonna have a whole music staff at the bottom of the screen?! I can understand simplified guitar and drums, but seriously, at this point you need to just go play your real piano!

vgdude887 5 pts

You guys do realize the last "new" Rock Band game was released two years ago, right? And EA only helps with the game's distribution.

Tsawwassen 5 pts

People look at the music games and say " o hey, we did that X times ago" But yet every year, EA makes money off new sports titles, with minimal changes each time.... They are as bad as microsoft

Rudorlf 5 pts

I wonder if Harmonix will make a "K-ON!: Rock Band"? (lolz) :P

TrueIori 5 pts

maybe i would have cared 10 rockbands ago -_- but this is just silly. This and fing Activison with Cod it what killing the game industry ....sad.

score89 6 pts

Triple mic and keyboard makes think in bohemian rapsody. I think keyboard is an interesting way to keep the genre alive, some of you are already tired (cant blame you 10 guitarheroes and 5 rockbands), but us the RockBand fans are looking forward to see what RB3 has to show, especially if it has a new instrument

PaVILiOn_010 5 pts

I wholeheartedly support this decision, on one VERY IMPORTANT condition: They can't pick the songs around the keyboard. Who cares if not every song has it? But on say, Dream Theater, Rush, etc. songs, it would be freakin' awesome to play. As long as Harmonix doesn't pick the set list around the keyboard, i'll buy the peripheral in a heartbeat.

Eclipse-015 5 pts

But with the keyboard as an instrument, that probably means that there isn't going to be that great of songs now...
