Unlike the first Rock Band, which initially shipped bundled with a microphone, guitar, and drum kit, Rock Band 2 is currently only sold as a standalone product. The bundle won't ship until mid-October and individual instruments aren't yet available (though they're slated to hit stores this week). For that reason we aren't evaluating the instruments in our review of the game, but given the numerous problems (broken drum pedals, faulty strum bars, and dead microphones) with the original Rock Band equipment, as well as the new features of RB 2's instruments, we wanted to share our impressions of the hardware after five days of intense use.

We'll start with the guitar, which carries a suggested retail price of $69.99 USD. It's still a Fender Stratocaster, but it now has a new, cool-looking faux wood grain finish. It's also wireless (AA batteries are included). So far we haven't had to replace the batteries and we have had no issues with the game not recognizing notes--it performs just like a wired guitar. One of the neatest features is the guitar's ability to auto-calibrate your television's audio/video lag with the game. All you have to do is hold the guitar up to your speakers for a few seconds to determine audio lag and then hold the guitar in front of your television while the screen flashes to compensate for video delay. Unless you're dragging your instruments all over town you won't have to use this feature much, but it'll be useful at least once and works great. The strum bar is a little more firm, but that's really it as far as how the guitar feels when compared to the original guitar.

Rock Band 2's drums carry a hefty MSRP of $89.99. Like the guitar, they're wireless and include batteries. Unlike the guitar they can't be used to automatically calibrate lag--a bummer if you only buy the drums and have trouble adjusting the game's lag settings on your own. The drums don't look much different than before, but they've actually received quite a bit of attention. The pedal is now covered with a metal plate, which hopefully will make it more durable than the original pedal. It also stays attached to the kit when you lift it--a huge plus for anyone who has watched the pedal crash to the floor when carrying their drums from place to place. The base has also been altered a bit and feels sturdier. But the big improvements to the kit are with the drum heads. They're quieter and also extremely accurate. I'm not the world's best drummer and I'd typically average about 94% on medium when playing Rock Band with the original drums. Playing with the new drums on the same difficulty my percentage went up to 99% and I had a streak of over 500 notes during the first song I played. That never happened with the old drums.

Are the new instruments worth the money? If you own a Rock Band guitar and it's in good shape, there's little reason to drop $70 on a new guitar, even though it works great. The drums are a little more enticing. The $90 price tag is difficult to swallow for casual drummers, but if you consider yourself an expert (or even if you just play a lot of drums in Rock Band) the improved sensitivity and quieter pads are worth the cash. It's anyone's guess as to how well they'll hold up from a reliability standpoint, but so far we haven't had any issues to report.

Note: The text and video review for Rock Band 2 will be posted on Sept. 16.

yunarce19... the world tour set looks absolutly nothing like a real set infact tome the rock band set looks much more realistic, because while it might have cymbals, there placed low and to far centered so you never actually have to cross your hands, the because they only have 3 toms they have to use cymbals for some roles which is really quite annoying...

Hey Ultra_mega_man, the drums should be entirely compatible from GH to RB on most platforms. There were some previous issues, but apparently the companies worked them out. PS3's may require the latest patches to make everything work well. There are some guitar issues if you are trying to go from RB 1 or 2 to older Guitar Hero versions though so be aware of that. I put together a compatibility list from all the info I could find, so hopefully this helps out some people, http://rockband2controllercompatability.weebly.com/ I didn't include the drum info on there as it appears that isn't an issue as only the latest versions support drums and they work together as I pointed out above.

djjman, Wow. I heard about the Blue and yellow problem but your post made me think differently, it doesn't sound to great and I've heard a lot bad about this. I'm waiting for GHWT too see if that can offer better.

ok so this is how my sunday started, After spending a good deal of the day playing RB2 with my new RB2 drumset on saturday I was in heaven. I noticed that night that the game started to ignore my hits or so I thought. Sunday morning I wanted to jam some so I tried out the drum trainer to find out when i hit any pad the blue light would light up as if i had hit both pads at the same time and this would happen randmomly. So I did what anyone who just spent almost 100 dollars on a product would. I called Gamestop. They told me they do not handle returns on RB2 hardware. So i grabbed that red piece of paper and called. The guy I talked to from EA told me to place a sock over the pad. ??WTF I told him I called gamestop and he said go back and demand to speak with the manager. Well I did and I got fully refunded because they didnt have any to replace mine with anyways. So I took my money and drove all over town looking for another set. Well i found it over the river 20 miles from my house and the only one in stock. I get back to my house and to my suprise this one is even worse than my last. This set registers the yellow everytime i hit the blue nothing random about it... its everytime. So pissed I called blockbuster... they reminded me i bought the last one in stock and the manager told me they do not have any return/replace policy on the drumset ... he said "you open it ... its yours" so im currenly waiting on my EA coffin for the pads

All PS3 GH and RB instruments are inter-compatible. So, if you have the PS3 version, yes.

I dont know if GH:WT drums are compatible with RB but I plan on getting GH:WT just because it sounds like a more enjoyable experience with high rise cymbals. My only problem is reports that the drums are a lot easier than on RB... I might end up getting Rock Revolution just to play some more authentic drums.

Now which one is better the RB2 version for drums or GH:WT drums or do i have to get both for each game

The RB and RB2 drums will be compatible with GH:WT but you will lose one of the colors. GH:WT drums have 3 drum pads, 2 cymbals, and a footpad while RB/RB2 drums only have 4 drum pads and a footpad.

I wanna know if the RB2 drums are compatible w/ GH:WT! (And Vis-a-Vers)

You forgot to mention that the frets on the new rock band guitar are quieter... no more "CLICK CLICK CLICK" when you change notes... if you don't have the spare guitar, this is a definite buy!!

My old rock band drums dropped notes like crazy, had a cracked pedal (that i had to fix in a ghetto fashion) the blue and the yellow pads where cracked and reinforced with cardboard from a shoe box and one of the bottom stands was cracked due to my clumsy friend.. So I gave in and got the rock band 2 drums. They are ALOT better then the old ones. They feel more durable and the bounce is really really nice. I pretty much five star everything on expert with out trying now.

I wouldn't shell out anything for either of them because everything I got is in great shape, but I say for those people that didn't buy 1, just buy 2, go to a game store buy 1 and some points and your problems are solved with all the media

I'm still with Guitar Hero 4, but I haven't researched Rock Band 2's official set list yet. Nonetheless it'll be on the Wii so I guess my best bet is Guitar Hero 4. The new drums look nifty though, but Guitar Hero is amazing :). I agree with shani_boy101, why would EA create Rock Band 2 and forget about other continents who haven't even got Rock Band 1 yet.

I want to pick up the bundle but also want to see some reviews/opinions on the GH WT instruments and any compatibility issues.

Hmmm I need to check out the price of GH World Tour instruments also, whatever is cheaper I will get that.

I would wait for the bundle. It would be cheaper in the long run and I would have all the upgraded stuff (need the new drums since the non-slip pads would make it ALOT easier to use on my slippery floor)

WHY HAVEN'T WE EVEN GOT ROCK BAND 1 here in Australia??? It's been out for over a year and EA can't be bothered to export it here. We are basically dominated by Guitar Hero right now and bringing in Rock Band will stir up the market here. Harmonix, EA and MTV Games why the heck have you made this franchise basically US only??? We should have gotten it same time time as Europe at least and they haven't even got it on all consoles! I want Rock Band 2 as well as GH:WT and because you're not selling it here 20 million people are missing out on your exclusive 500 songs!!! Grow up and get it over here already, and don't jack up the price until its worth more than a 360.
