Trion deserves all the success they get. I really hope Rift continues to grow and better their company. They are one developer that works on adding content and refining their game like no other in the MMO space. If I ever playa traditional MMO again after I get tired of GW2 I would probably check Rift out again.
Trion Worlds announces new sales milestone for fantasy MMORPG, secures additional $85 million in funding.
Before Trion Worlds' massively multiplayer online role-playing game Rift had even shipped last March, it amassed 1 million users. Today, the company shared financial information concerning the game's first year, saying the MMORPG recorded revenues of $100 million in 2011.
In addition, Trion Worlds said it has secured $85 million in new funding, led by the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan. Additional capital came from Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments. Trion Worlds said it plans to use this additional funding to "further grow its worldwide premium online games business."
On top of Rift, Trion Worlds is currently at work on two new titles. These are massively multiplayer real-time strategy game End of Nations, as well as Defiance, a project currently being developed in conjunction with the Syfy channel.
Outside of development, Trion Worlds is also entering the publishing business. Currently codenamed Red Door, Trion Worlds' new business combines a consumer service and what it calls a "full-scale publishing and development platform."

Rift is a solid game as a WoW-type MMO goes. Nice graphics, talent trees, lots of nifty features. But, its not Star Wars, and its not WoW.
BTW, assuming that 1 million people bought the game at retail, you have only 50 mil in sub revenue. Which is about 300k subs consistant throughout the year. I wouldn't be surprised if the game has less than 100k now.
To everyone thinking this is good news...it's not. 100 million is absolutely terrible for an MMO. Especially when it starts so strong with 1 million subs. Nowadays, you can go on there and there are maybe 2 or 3 shards worth playing on. The other ones are so under-populated that most of the zones are overwhelmed with rift spawns. The game is still horribly buggy, has terrible class imbalances and has no real identifiable plot. Perfect example of a title starting strong and then flaking out a few months later. TOR seems to be headed in the same direction if the official forums are any indication. NO ONE seems to be liking that game a month later.
@n0matter dont make an impression from the forums, even the official ones, there is always tons of hate
Puts things into perspective. I was sure that Rift sold really well, and they're only at $100m. And here we have the new Star Wars TOR that cost twice that amount to develop. I wonder how long it'll take TOR to make a profit.
@Lhomity The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan has a lot of investments in multiple different companies spanning multiple industries, if Trion went under then it would probably hurt them a bit but it wouldn't cause the teachers to retire in poverty.
So if Trion Worlds ever goes bust, the teachers of Ontario retire in poverty? That's a nasty thought. Play more Rift, you guys!
I enjoyed my time in Rift very much. The graphics are delicious. I honestly thought I would keep playing for months or years but never established those early friendship bonds that kept me in UO and CoH for huge lengths of times. I'm an MMO binge-user though.
but i admit for trion first attempt its just awesome if they keep like thiss tey re next projects could own
I thought this MMO would've flopped on its face when it came out, I was way wrong, good for them, still too WoWish for me.
@Grovilis well its a mmo, gamers dont have any other option thab buying it,thats the only way to ensure sales, blackmailing the gamers into buying it,just like d3,or simcity
Rift is a pretty good game. I wouldn't have minded migrating from WoW, except that I couldn't get any of my friends on board. So, we're still hanging around WoW. The talent trees felt great to me, with plenty of room to really craft the type of character you wanted to play. Rift invasions were already starting to get old by the end of my month with the game, but the few dungeons I'd run added a bit of variety.
its fake. Everyone know Rift have empty servers, already closed some. This game is going down if they dont choose to be F2P fast. 1 mio users at start? Never. they had around 300k max.
Good for Trion. I played Rift for a good 10 months and I hope the game keeps going. However It's very apparent the games population has dropped dramatically since the release of ToR. To the point where they are already doing server merges. Which is never a good sign.
Rift is a really high quality MMORPG. In my opinion, it is the best WoW clone out there. It has a lot of user friendly features at launch that Star Wars The Old Republic did not have even now. Sigh! And they have a smaller budget than Bioware.
