Rhode Island nets $713,000 from ongoing Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning sales

Revenue from Steam sales of 2012 role-playing game have reached six figures for the Ocean State.

Rhode Island has netted $713,000 from ongoing Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning sales since the state acquired various Amalur assets last summer, the state's lawyer has confirmed with GameSpot.

The figure references cumulative revenue from ongoing sales of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning made through Valve's digital distribution hub Steam and not physical copies of the game.

The state's lawyer, Richard Land of Chace Ruttenberg & Freedman, explained that Electronic Arts--which originally published Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning through its EA Partners program--continues to have the right to sell the game and earn revenue.

The $713,000 figure was first reported by the Providence Journal. It is in addition to the $430,000 raised from auctions of computers, office furniture, and various other wares left over after 38 Studios filed for bankruptcy last May.

Rhode Island acquired various Amalur assets in August, including 38 Studios' unreleased massively multiplayer online game codenamed Copernicus. The state is now trying to sell those assets, and according to comments from Land in May, "there is interest" in them.

The state currently faces over $100 million in debt as a result of 38 Studios' bankruptcy. In addition to selling the company's assets, the state is suing founder Curt Schilling and other architects of the controversial $75 million loan that enticed the studio to relocate from Massachusetts to Rhode Island in 2010.

It was a very enjoyable game. This whole situation isn't just Schilling's fault, though.

I dont care much about the studio, revenue or sales, but the game itself was good - maybe lack some polishing, but still good.

I liked the game should have been longer.

KOA is what Fable 2 and 3 were supposed to be gameplay wise. Fable 1 story walks all over KoA and jumps up and down. In KoA the world, characters, and story were barely passable as decent but the gameplay, my lord, the gameplay was AWESOME. Super boring game world but fun to play. 7/10.

Its as if Rhode Island is claiming it got scammed by a fake email asking for money to receive someones large inheritance. Fools!

Hop this baby on Steam with a nice little Steam sale.  Say good bye to the debt.  (well a good chunk of it anyways.)

I'm still a little baffled on why they are selling Curt Schilling. From the sound of it, the state lured HIM to it with the loan in question. He talked big but there was no reason for the state to believe it. It was their own mistake.

Bought this game at full price, never regretted it.

Did they ever fix the Field of View issues with this game?  It was pretty sneaky how they led people to believe their was a fix being implemented right after release...then it never came from what i recall.

I can't wait for this drama to end. I just wish they'd hurry up and sell the IP to a capable and willing studio or publisher.

P.S. This game is free for PlayStation Plus subscribers in AU, UK, EU this month. I'd still love to know how much Sony pay to get those games free to their subscribers.

I still hope we will get a sequel. It was a great Game. Evryone who likes Western RPGs should try it.

Only need to sell 100 times as many copies to make their money back.

Kingdoms of Alamur should have been a success and perhaps would have if they didn't make the move to Rhode Island.

Rhode Island simply had to do 5 minutes of research and would figure out that this was a doomed investment.

38 Studies also should have known that this is loan would instantly amount to bad debt

Only the BIGGEST STUDIOS have budgets of 100 million and even then they have a loyal fan base, a massive wealth of experience, valued franchise etc.

Everyone who was involved in this should go to jail or be hanged for sheer idiocy.

@xlord121 Well I tend to agree that nearly everyone dropped the ball here. But I think that decisions on loans are based not on research into the industry, which requires some expertise and much more than five minutes, but rather based on the financial statements and forecasts provided by the company seeking the loan, which is usually supported (or not) by the financial institutions who also involved. I believe that's why banks are included as defendants in this case.

@xlord121

"We understand your capital needs to bring your project Copernicus to MMO completion to be $75,000,000. Based on our understanding to date of your financial projections, the EDC would either guarantee the repayment annual debt service of up to $75M of the company?s borrowing or issue $75M of revenue bonds, the proceeds of either of which would provide the necessary financing to complete production on Copernicus and begin relocating 38 Studios to Rhode Island."

That's from the statement of claim.

The take-away point in all of these forum comments is: if people haven't read up on what's going on, their comments will be wholly uninformed.

This game is mega cheap now, and it seemed solid....would anyone here recommend it?

Holoogamooga_

@pycho22solid The combat's fun, but the story is lackluster, there's virtually no character development, and it's still pretty easy on the hardest difficulty. I think I got over 30 hours out of it without any DLC. The different skill trees are fun to experiment and play with.

@pycho22solid It's a good game, a bit lack-luster in the story but worth it.

they valued the IP at 1.3 million, and yet they sold it for $713K.  RI might just be the worst run state in the union.

@TheLeftHandDoom No. Read better. The 713k figure is not for the sale of intellectual property, it's for ongoing sales.

The game was pretty good.. but tbh, the timing was off.

It came out shortly after the epicness that was Skyrim and it kind of felt like a ripoff clone. Had it been out before skyrim; who knows, i may have thought the opposite, because it seems like a pretty damn good game. The timing of release however killed it for me. I was to entrenched in Skyrim at the time.

Very valid point, I liked Amalur better than Skyrim, but I know I'm in the minority.

@shiss27 The game could have been great but was completely ruined by level scaling. Even the DLC didn't fit in with the game. Maybe with $500 million they could have got their act together.

38 Studios have just started a new Kickstarter project looking for funds for Amalur 2. They're hoping to reach their initial $200 million target in the first week which they claim should be enough to pay for the box artwork.

TUH. Maybe if the State of Rhode Island had been a bit more patient they could have actually made some money

seems Rhode island got amalur'ed.

Pretty sure these assets were worth a lot more.

But you have no choice but to sell at a low point, what can you do.

plus they want to get rid of the assets asap

Makes me happy I bought the game from EA on Origin then. I don't want a cent of the money going to that state after they ruined the company that made such an awesome game.

Stag_Lee

@DragonessAthena On the surface it seems to me that the company ruined itself. How do you think the state ruined 38 Studios?

sLAUGHTERhouse0
sLAUGHTERhouse0

@Stag_Lee @DragonessAthena They were offered the money if they relocated, which they did. Hence the state ultimately fucking the company over as they had to pay it back anyway.

Stag_Lee
Stag_Lee

@sLAUGHTERhouse0 @Stag_Lee @DragonessAthena The company folded because of its own failings. The state had nothing to do with it.

Based on the information provided by 38 Studios, Rhode Island provided a loan. The state now alleges that the information provided was incomplete and fraudulent.

Did you read the statement of claim? You seem to misunderstand the issue.

I'm sure EA pocketed every dollar when the game was sold on Origin.

The article doesn't make alot of sense.  True I'm sure the game sold the most on Steam, given its marketshare of digital distribution, but it isn't the only place selling the game.  So what exactly is the article saying?

So is the figure of total Steam sales, or assumed that all of the sales are from steam?

Because you can at the very least buy it on Origin as well.  Probably greeman gaming and some of the lower tier ones as well.

What about the physical 360/PS3 discs? Are those still being made and/or are any of those that were made still sitting on shelves? Are they sold out or are they being kept off the market?  Seems to me there might still be a market for some physical discs as well.  Was the game sold on xboxlive?  What are those figures.

I'm wondering what this article actually means other than in some way of classification, $713k has been made from game sales.  But the real amount could be even more...or steam sales were just a major portion of the $713k, but is being misrepresented as responsible for the entire sum.

@jmc88888 The state is mad and the taxpayers want heads.  They(the state) will report whatever is necessosory to satisfy.

Those numbers... lol, who knows.  And to them the sales amounts no longer matter

I would love to see some investigative journalism that actually explains how 32 Studios spent over $100 million and why RI actually loaned them that much money.

There is definitely more going on than we know about.

There's no way Amalur cost that much to make.

Loved the game, and sad what happened to 38 Studios.
