Rez creator stepping away from game development

Tetsuya Mizuguchi moves away from production at Q Entertainment; now acting as company spokesperson.

Rez creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi is no longer making games at Q Entertainment. Studio director Nobuhiko Shimizu told Eurogamer today that Mizuguchi has stepped into a more secondary role at the company.

"Right now Mizuguchi does not produce the games," Shimizu said.

According to the report, since shipping 2011's Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game Child of Eden, Mizuguchi involved himself with academic work while remaining at Q Entertainment. Shimizu said he is now a spokesperson for the company.

Child of Eden shipped in June 2011 for the Xbox 360, selling just 34,000 copies during its launch month, before arriving in September of that year for the PlayStation 3. Both versions received warm critical plaudits.

It's no surprise that Eden underperformed - there were a number of problems surrounding the game's perception. No one liked the fact that it was being used to push Kinect/Move - it was basically a motion control martyr for the console makers. It also made no sense to launch 360 version 3 months before PS3 - an "art shooter" wouldn't appeal to 360's base, and PS3's base would feel insulted at second dibs.Eden would have a success story if they'd passed on motion control, kept the budget down, and released digitally (on both platforms at once) for $20-30.

Because some developers are being destroyed by Kinect, the illusion beset by Microsoft...

My sentiments exactly!  The guy's a creative force, but we all burn out eventually.  The landscape is changing, he'll be back though.

That's a real shame that his talent is not used on making more fantastic games.

This is a sad day for gaming. Mizuguchi is a true genius who has been squashed by penny pinching publishers and the rise of the frat boy gamer.

It's sad to see him go, but you can hardly blame him. When your work is ignored and pushed aside by the masses, what can you do?

Rez is a masterpiece. Child of Eden is its spiritual sucessor.

We'll miss you, Mizuguchi.

And so a great figure is lost. The man was a genius when it came to combining rhythm and gameplay.

After following him since the good ol' Sega days, I understand why he would be stepping away from the scene.  Gaming is just not the same as it use to be :(

That's kind of a shame, Child of Eden is a pretty awesome and unique game.
