Respawn's Titanfall launching spring 2014 - Report

Game Informer leak reveals name, first details on debut project from studio founded by Call of Duty veterans.

The first game from Respawn Entertainment--the studio founded by Call of Duty co-creators Vince Zampella and Jason West--is called Titanfall and is coming to the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC in spring 2014. That's according to the latest issue of Game Informer, obtained by a NeoGAF user.

"After a bitter split with Activision and Call of Duty, Respawn debuts its bold vision for next-gen multiplayer," the magazine's cover reads.

Respawn Entertainment trademarked the name Titanfall in April 2013.

The magazine contains numerous details concerning Titanfall, the first of which is that the project was originally targeted for current-generation systems. After realizing its ambitions were too grand for existing technology, Respawn looked into shifting to next-generation kits.

As was previously rumored, Titanfall will apparently be a first-person shooter that combines mechs (called Titans) and ground combat through player characters called Pilots. The game is supposedly being built on the Source engine and will run at 60 frames per second.

The Xbox 360 version is supposedly being developed by an external studio, though this outfit was not named.

The game will also reportedly use Microsoft's cloud technology for dedicated servers, physics, and artificial intelligence. According to the magazine, Titanfall is aiming for a vibe similar to films like District 9 or Blade Runner.

Respawn Entertainment was not immediately available to comment on the leak. The developer has previously teased that it will reveal its new project during next week's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.

Zampella hinted on Twitter yesterday that the new game will be shown during Electronic Arts' E3 2013 briefing on Monday, June 10. EA is publishing the studio's game through its EA Partners program.

"Some of the guys are working on a little surprise for the EA press conference on Monday," he said.

@strawberry9 complaining that this game is "always online" is like complaining that you need an internet connection to play an MMO or watch Netflix.

Source engine?  Is this 2005?

@deathstream

see Dear Esther, it uses Modified Source Engine and it look as good as Cry Engine 3.

JayQproductions

@Ladiesman17 @deathstream yea, but there was also almost NOTHING other than landscape in Dear Esther, just about any engine can handle graphics that good if it doesn't have other things using the engines resources.

Must be highly modified because everything valve has put out since Half-Life 2 has looked outdated.

@deathstream

Valve are lazy, they don't put too much effort with their games, the last time they released decent games are Portal 2, and that was 2 years ago,

I think they are busy building a better framework for PC (Steam) and Console (Steambox) so. yeah, that's forgiven =p I heard they developing Source 2 engine though, that must be comes with few games #fingers crossed. =p

Multiplayer = No buy. Sick of MP in everything.

JayQproductions

@DarthLod Then you must really dislike both the next gen consoles because they are basically being built with being social in mind so majority of games will probably be MMO and multiplayer games next gen.

It's prophetic.  The once great Titan is about fall and fall hard.  But, it's on PC so it's fine.

As long as it's on PC, I may give it a try.

I never doubted that Microsoft would deliver on the games front.  And this isn't even one of the 15 exclusives they mentioned. Can't wait for E3.

Hjindee
Hjindee

@BurningJC007 not really a exclusive as it comes to multiple platforms.. you know.. Xbone, 360... AND PC! hurray!

grognard
grognard like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@Hjindee @BurningJC007 It's console exclusive - just like most 360 exclusives were console exclusive and still showed up on PC.  This still benefitted 360 greatly as most people don't have gaming rigs capable of outperforming their home console and many gamers prefer to game from their couch in the living room.

JayQproductions

@BurningJC007 I think it probably is one of the exclusives they mentioned, why wouldn't be?

BurningJC007
BurningJC007

@JayQproductions @BurningJC007 They stated all the 15 exclusives will be done by Microsoft's 1st party studios, Respawn is not a first party studio.

@JayQproductions Uh Ryse is not a purely Kinect game anymore and is now controller based, it clearly started as such, but I guess they went back to the drawing board. I expect we'll know how much Kinect usage is actually involved when E3 gets here.

@grognard @Lil_Burrit0 @BurningJC007 @JayQproductions There is also 3 more exclusives we know about that haven't been talked about in a while. One is "Ryse" by Crytek but that's a kinect game so nobody really cares, then there is also Class 4 which is a zombie MMO that has been in the works for the past 4 years and the arcade game "State of Decay" is a sample of what to expect in the MMO. Also Harmonix just announced their Xbox exclusive "fantasia: music evolved"

@Lil_Burrit0 @BurningJC007 @JayQproductions That's still 3 more exclusives than Sony has shown for PS4 and yet most of the kids on these forums claim that Sony is more dedicated to gaming based on preliminary info and rumors.

Lil_Burrit0
Lil_Burrit0

@BurningJC007 @JayQproductions Which the total is now 12 left seeing as Forza and Quantum Break were already announced. So far I see it as very weak granted its only 3 games but it's 3 non Kinect games which worries me even more about MS E3 showing.

Lil_Burrit0

A giant robot shooter this is supposed to move systems? Innovation would be much better.

blackothh
blackothh

@Lil_Burrit0 in all fairness, it COULD be innovative but considering whos making it, what you and me would consider innovative, is probably vastly different then what the makers of modern warfare think is innovative.

JayQproductions
JayQproductions

@blackothh @Lil_Burrit0 See I would think the other way, it's being made by the people who innovated the FPS with Call of Duty 4 and a team that is probably one of  the most innovative dev's in the business. COD's lack of innovation is because these guys where kicked off of the series 4 years ago.

JayQproductions
JayQproductions

@Lil_Burrit0 @JayQproductions @blackothh actually it was in RPG's first but it was innovative because it was the first to add it to an online FPS. It's level based unlocks and create-a-class system,  prestige mode, and killstreak rewards where all innovations COD 4 either introduced or perfected.

Yeah. Dedicated physics in real time through  the cloud is the joke of this week.

Its not even remotely possible. Well its is if you want to play at 1 FPS

thenephariouson
thenephariouson

@edinko

Course its possible, in the same way that Sony wishes to allow PS4 games to be 'Streamed' directly onto the PS4 consoles, in addition for players to observe their friends games running in real time.

Both technologies are reliant on the end-point users 'Bandwidth'.

JayQproductions
JayQproductions

@edinko nobody said anything about "dedicated physics" or even "in real time"

edinko

@JayQproductions @edinko You obviously didn't read the article.

"The game will also reportedly use Microsoft's cloud technology for dedicated servers, physics, and artifical intelligence."

edinko

@JayQproductions @edinko You are saying it mate as if there were more reasons needed to dislike the Xbone and the lies from M$ associated with it.

I am skeptical to both systems so far and neutral. O don't think that SONY are saints but at least they are not making up some total nonsense like this so called cloud power

edinko
edinko

@JayQproductions @edinko CAnt agree mate. Its not usable in real time for fast changing stuff  and yet M$ is claiming that the cloud can make the xbone 3 times faster. that's pure nonsense

@edinko @JayQproductions yea, i see dedicated servers *comma* physics, and nothing about "in real time" so i think you just read it how you wanted it to read so you can hate on it.
