Resistance future uncertain - Sony

Resistance: Burning Skies dev says there are currently "no definitive plans" for the alien-fighting shooter franchise.

May's tepidly received Resistance: Burning Skies for the PlayStation Vita may be the last entry in Sony's shooter series for some time. Speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine UK, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe online producer Daniel Brooke explained he enjoyed working on Burning Skies, but no firm plans are in motion for future games.

“The Resistance franchise has been exciting to work on, but as for the future, we have no definitive plans," he said.

In January, Resistance series creator Insomniac Games said it was finished building new entries in the franchise. Company CEO Ted Price bluntly stated, "We won't be making any more Resistances." The studio is now at work on the class-based shooter Overstrike and the Facebook game Outernauts.

The Resistance series was born in 2006 with Insomniac's Resistance: Fall of Man for the PlayStation 3. That game was followed by Resistance 2 in 2008 for the same platform, and 2009's Resistance: Retribution for the PSP, which was developed by Sony Bend. Insomniac returned as developer for 2011's Resistance 3, and Nihilistic Software created Resistance: Burning Skies.

Honestly Resistance is Sony's best franchise in my opinion.. I love it... this is very sad news for me.

I only entered the franchise recently with the release of resistance 3 and i have to say it was a great franchise. i plan on buying the first two now aswell. R3 has one of the best single player FPS campaigns i have played in quite a few years. Its a big loss to me to see it go...

As first i saw GameGear close to play it,

space arcade games or adventure are best for those in bed sick time.

Strategy and FPS are to be played with keyboard and mouse.

With to show graphics,Sonic in a realistic levels but not less cartoon

would made it fine for a play.

I think Resistance was a good universe for games, but I wouldn't mind if they game it a rest for a few years and came back to give it a fresh look later.  Many games get a nice jolt / reboot after a little time has passed.  Hopefully it won't be relegated to the archives for too long.

No big loss as far as I'm concerned. It was never essential critically speaking, nor was it a runaway success commercially.

I think the problem with the Resistance series is that none of the games were spectacular. Another big factor would be that fans of the games were often turned off by some poor decision of Insomniac Games in new releases. The removal of the weapon wheel and the lack of campaign split screen was a really bad loss in R2. Then in R3 they completely change the multiplayer mode and focus on small scale battles, basically turning the multiplayer upside down from where is used to be. The games simply weren't impressive enough for new customers and old fans had little reasons to play the new and ''improved'' games.

I love the Resistance series, but after the ending to Resistance 3, it would be pointless to continue the story. I suppose they could have more spin-offs, but they can only make so many of those before it just becomes completely stale.

Really enjoyed the first game, the second not quite as much.  Not played the third.

For the PlayStation 4 I just hope Guerrilla Games pick up the franchise..  Resistance with the polish of Killzone would actually be the best shooter out there.

I also read on IGN the other week that it was the original makers of Syphon Filter that made Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Resistance: Burning Skies.

I'm just seriously hoping they now return to Syphon Filter and the legend that is Gabe Logan.  Those games still show how 3rd person shooters should be done.

I totally agree on your statement, the Killzone team would be a perfect developer if there would be any next Resistance for PS4.

My thoughts for what they are worth.

I really enjoyed RFOM. I'm a campaign only gamer that actually enjoyed both the campaign and multiplayer RFOM experiences. Great game and release title for the PS3. R2 campaign was also enjoyable, but not as enjoyable as RFOM and I must admit I didn't touch the R2 MP. The R3 campaign was too disjointed from R2 for mine, enjoyable but that enjoyment was limited somewhat by the lackluster story arch deviation. I just didn't relate or connect with Joseph Capelli's character in R3, and basically wondered why the turned him into a handbag.. Why?

Anyway, the Resistance universe is a great space. Hope at some stage they revisit it. Just with a notable, interesting and worthy campaign/story arch to warrant it.

Thanks for the games Insomniac.

Okay not quite sure why everyone is so upset over this or why it even warrented a Gamespot article. Resistance 1 sucked, Resistance 2 was good but could have been better, Resistance 3 was crap and I only played it because I was curious about the story. I have since sold all 3 back to Gamestop and not even looked back. The only one that I thought was really good was Resistance: Retribution for the PSP. I still play it occassionaly. I can't vouch for Resistance: Burning Skies because I haven't played it but that's because I don't own a Vita because there are no games on the Vita worth buying a Vita for.

@mechmaster525 no games yet !!! your right though and i have one !! resistance was ok but felt flat and they some how managed to take the spark out of resistance.  The pulse rifle (alien) sounds like a machine gun and feels like it too, i dunno about you but i thought in RFOM thats what made the game, also its an 1st generation ps3 game that was set in sunny england and looked pretty good. the vita version sadly was a real let down and at 30 quid, no i think not!! on the flip side it does show the power of the vita off, visually good, just a shame its dull.

Underrated franchise. R1 & R2 were amazing games that had a bit of an old-school vibe: Long SP campaign, good narrative, great level design and challenging gameplay. Even the MP was brilliant. As far as I'm concerned, R1 & R2 urinate all over COD, BF, Killzone and even the mighty Halo (and I'm primarily an Xbox man!)R3 was a bit of a let down, compared to the first 2 though.I still think the biggest problem with Resistance & Killzone, not doing as well as other FPS, isn't just the games themselves, but more to do with the crappy PS3 controller. It really is useless, especially for FPS games. I'm not bothered about having proper trigger buttons, but the analogue sticks are crap. It severely lets the PS3 down, especially it's exclusive shooters. If a game comes out on both PS3 & 360, I'll buy the Xbox version purely based on the controller being far superior. However, I'm hopeful we will see a Resistance 4 on PS3, or PS4, hopefully, with a better controller !

bubba_1988

@tizmond Killzone is far superior to Resistance. I mean the AI alone should tell you something. Better story in R1 though.

@tizmond I don't like how the thumbsticks on the xbox 360 have an indentation in them. I can put my thumbs wherever I want on the PS3 controller's thumbsticks but not on the 360's.

@tizmond Well that's just a matter of opinion concerning the controller...I for one bought a PS3 also because of the controller being used to it for a long time because of the PS2 and hating the weird analog sticks placement of the 360 controller...I simply like more Sony's controller

@Gelugon_baat Killzone popularity is due to the Halo-Killer campaign that was started since the announcement of the original Killzone on the PS2

Also Killzone was first release for PS2 so fans of the original were already on for a KZ2

Not to mention Insomniac stepped from the Platformes genre directly in the FPS genre without knowing much so for what they knew they did a hell of a good job

Also take in consideration KZ and Resistance have the same popularity now

Everybody who owns a PS3 at least knows about Resistance

@Gelugon_baat Uhhh do you even have a PS3?  Both games have Greatest Hits classification....  In fact, the original Killzone was hailed as a pretty mediocre game.  Killzone 2 was great, and imho, so was Killzone 3.  But that doesn't make the Resistance trilogy any less popular.

@Gelugon_baat Hmmm... It's true they do somewhat compete with one another... Gears of War and Halo were more successful at avoiding that... But then the PS3 in general has much more varied exclusives than strictly shooters...

This comment has been deleted

fightingfish18

@Gelugon_baat Uhh  again, you clearly don't have either console.  I have both a 360 and a PS3.  The ps3 has way more exclusive AAA titles than the 360.  They both have exclusive games on PSN and Arcade.  Most of the Arcade exclusive games are remakes of older games...  That's not a bad thing, I've bought several of them.  However, psn exclusives for at least the past 12 months have been better than XBLA exclusives.  PS3 does have more exclusives all around, that's a fact.  I love both my consoels for different reasons, and enjoy gaming on both of them, but that doesn't mean I'm blind to their flaws.

@Gelugon_baat Your original statement was "the Xbox-360-shackled catalogue has just as much variety as the PS3's own platform-restricted titles."

You've been shown that that ^ isn't true. Nobody's asking you to "percieve Sony through a more glorified lens" or whatever. We're just saying the PS3 actually has a lot more variety in its games, and that comes from having more exclusives.

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

@Gelugon_baat If you're talking about Xbox Live Arcade or Indie titles, those really can't compare to the PS3 retail games that I listed.

Besides which, PSN has its own selection of small download-only games that are comparable to XBL Arcade.

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

@Gelugon_baat Getting evasive, are we? Why not just name a few of these games? What's so hard about that?

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

@Gelugon_baat "those like you who don't see beyond the higher-profile games"

What? So there are a bunch of Xbox exclusives that I somehow haven't heard of, because of Microsoft not marketing them properly? Would you care to name a few of these?

Spartan_418
Spartan_418 like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@Gelugon_baat The other difference is that Sony actually has a lot more exclusives than MS, if we're speaking strictly in terms of number of franchises.

MS only has Halo, Gears, Fable, Forza, and Alan Wake.

Sony has Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance, God of War, Gran Turismo, Motorstorm, Ratchet and Clank, Warhawk, MAG, InFamous, Heavy Rain, the list goes on.

They'll make a sequel for Resistance eventually.. maybe next gen they'll bring it back when they think it'll make a huge explosion on the scene.

Shame the Vita entry was so short. I beat it in 2 sittings. The PS3 games were long and a awesome.

@Rattlesnake_8 i'd like to see a prequel,Like a Resistance game in Russia.(where the virus started).in the story, they were able to contain it for a while, then it spread to the west.
