Resistance dev Insomniac is 'just getting started' with Fuse

Insomniac is looking into "expanding what we've begun with Fuse," but says it's not talking about DLC for the game.

Developer Insomniac is "just getting started" with the Fuse universe, and says it already planning new "experiences" for the franchise.

Fuse launched for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this week, and the Resistance and Ratchet & Clank has pledged its commitment to the new IP. "We’ve already begun expanding what we’ve begun with Fuse," wrote Insomniac CEO Ted Price on his blog.

The new experiences being developed are not related to DLC for the game, Price adds. "Right now as I write this we’re taking the core concepts behind Fuse and prototyping new stuff…stuff that leverages this bizarre alien substance which is at the heart of the game. No, I’m not talking about DLC. I’m talking about new Fuse experiences altogether."

Price said he is "damn proud" of the game, but is aware that the studio attracted its fair share of controversy from its decision to switch from cartoony Overstrike to a grittier Fuse mid-way through development.

"I’m well aware that we’ve taken some heat over our switch from Overstrike to Fuse. We read the YouTube comments. We watch the forums. And we listen," said Price.

"After our re-reveal of the game in summer 2012 we continued to make adjustments to the game, adding more color; making sure the humor came through in emergent dialogue. No, we didn’t make aesthetic changes because of a 12 year-old’s focus test comments. We did what we thought was right for the Fuse universe. In particular we focused on creating co-op weapons and gameplay that we think work better than any other co-op shooter out there and allowed that to drive the game."

Price said the studio has been "unusually (and sometimes unintentionally) open" about the switch between Overstrike and Fuse, and that Insomniac has been "giving everyone a window into the changes we’ve made along the way."

"This has been both good and bad for us," added Price. "While I know there are some who will never be convinced that moving to Fuse was the right decision, I know there are many who appreciate what we’ve done. I know there are many who will try Fuse and will love it."

GameSpot awarded Fuse a 7.0 in its review of the game, calling Insomniac's first multi-platform title in the developer's near 20-year history a "slick third-person shooter that is just fine to play solo, but a lot of fun with friends."

This game is awesome. We now playing in coop spitscreen and we really enjoy it. The intensity of the fighting is excellent followed by climbing scenes which catch his breath. Kudos to Insomniac for this great coop game. I hope there will be a sequel to see a port to PC

This game is going to barely sell anything. It is already buried in the Amazon charts and it just came out.

@XboxGuy1537 Well it doesn't hit Europe until tomorrow, but yeah, I think you're right. Even those of us that half want to play it are probably going to wait for a price drop on it. I think I'll get some fun out of it when I eventually play it, but I'm not rushing out to pick it up now.

Oh Insomniac........you used to be soooo good. Then you released R&C: All 4 One, which was bleh, at best. Then said that you are done with the Resistance series after part 3 was the best one. And it's been downhill from there.

Signing up with EA usually does that to a developer. EA is more concerned with selling DLC map packs then making a great game. They even made BioWare put multiplayer in Mass Effect for god's sake. Ugh.

@Godsire- To be fair, all the map packs for ME3 were free. Which was surprising considering... you know, EA.

I didn't play the MP much, mainly in the Beta. I thoroughly enjoyed the SP, ending notwithstanding.

I wanted the game when it was Overstrike. Now it just looks like every other shooter. It seemed like it had a different personality in the past. Now it just falls in with everyone else.I think its time for me to try to find Vanquish.I don't like any other shooter I've played so far

It's a new IP, and everyone's bitching.

When it's an old IP, people will want devs to make new IPs.

Sheesh, this is just embarrassing. Really guys?

@chipwithdip This is a new IP? Didn't notice. They could have called it Syndicate 2 and no one would have scratched their head over it anymore.

I don't get why everyone is hating on them and on Fuse. It's not like it's a franchise that has been milked. Fine, even if a game isn't great, that's no reason to put them down. I'm sure a lot of hard work was put into this game. Ugh... gamers can be so judgmental and unforgiving.

Ummm, in that video, the players plant explosives on the door and just turn around. No running for cover. They just turn around.

@bkohary I played the demo and there was this one time when I planted explosives. Next thing I ran like hell for cover, but the others were like "what's with that guy?", they didn't even flinch. True story right there.

i don't see any problem expanding fuse okay first one was a bust, but i think fuse can do better.they should also bring back resistance.

Come on, Fuse was so generic that now there is a photo of the game's box on the dictionary explaining what generic means.

How did I not even hear about this game? Like the name is familiar, but if anything it reminds me of Haze, that terrible PS3 game from years back. Gotta check it out, Insomniac leaving the Ratchet series is a long awaited step for the dev team.

Crossel777

No need to waste more resources on this generic TPS.

This is a tough one. For all we know that one reveal E3 trailer of Overstrike looking good was in fact a CG cutscene working its smoke n mirror tricks. What if the game's original vision played much similar to this re-branded product in terms of gameplay? (Poor A.I, bland environments etc.)  Just cos the trailer looked good, don't make the game amazing...

On the other hand,  Insomniac wanted to follow in the path of Resistance and give the look a bit more grit and "realistic" tone. Far as FUSE goes, it seems like a fun co-op game that is meant to be played as such. Pretty sure they are gathering all the feedback to make it a more compelling single player experience for its future sequels, if there will be any.

If anyone wants further proof in the ways of the game industry getting stale look no farther then Fuse but then again insomniac games has never held a ton of interest for me.  I guess its because I've grown tired of the shooter genre in general even though I still play BL2 here and there...

haha, and if the games doent sell well they'll blames us the customers for buying used games when in reality no one in their right minds would drop $60 on this

kessel21

@demon-returns agreed.  with a 7.0 score, i'll rent it.  i like playing co-op with a friend online much more than competitive MP, so these types of games appeal to me.  but there's zero chance this game is worth $60 based on the review and the Resistance series.

Resistance 1-3 were solid, but not spectacular games.  I am playing Res3 right now (purchased for $10) and I'd be absolutely irate if I'd paid $60 for it.  The gameplay is fine but the glitching, lag and random server drops make it borderline unplayable.  at $60 that's downright unacceptable.

the next gen, not allowing used/rented games is going to come down to review scores whether or not people spend their money on games.  how easily can the devs offer kickbacks and payola to buy off reviews?

I don't think Insomniac's talent is the shooter genre "FPS, TPS", their PS2 titles are much better than Resistance and this, I think they should go back to their roots or try something new.

Don't tell me they're already moving to a sequel. I'm looking forward to playing the game proper, but the only thing scaring me off is EA. I'm worried this is gonna turn into a P2W scheme or a DLC fest.

I blame EA

Khasym
Khasym

@aldronlin Fuse DOES have that EA "focus-grouped" feel to it. It's like they sat a bunch of developers at Insomniac down, made them play Gears 3 till their eyes bled, and then demanded they make something that could be compared to it.

aldronlin
aldronlin

@Khasym @aldronlin yup, to say that EA has no dip into the development is a joke.  EA is publishing it, they want to make money out of it, and i dont blame them for trying.  But because that, they will go in and F*^K up the game if they need to.  In this case, I think they did.

The demo was just pretty generic in both it's characters and enemies. Stayed away from it since, shsme, I have enjoyed many Innsomniac games in the past. Their last Ratchet and Resistance weren't much cop either thinking about it....
