So Capcom wanted this? Yikes... I am seriously worried for RE6. $50 says Capcom tried to implement a bunch of elements from ORC and, after the poor reception, RE6 will now be delayed til 2013 to make sure it isn't a complete crapfest
Slant Six Games says it would have enjoyed receiving higher marks for third-person shooter, but noted it accomplished what Capcom asked for.
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City shipped last week to low review scores across the board, and now its developer has responded. Studio producer Mike Kerr told Eurogamer recently that the critical response to the company's third-person shooter has been difficult.
"It's challenging. A lot of people put a lot of time and effort into the game and obviously we'd like to see the review scores be a little better than they are right now," he said. "In the end, I think our position on it is that we read every review and we try to pull out all the constructive feedback that we can so we can learn a little about what people liked and what they didn't."
In regards to expectations set by Capcom for Operation Raccoon City, Kerr said the Canadian developer was successful in creating the first third-person squad-based shooter in the history of the Resident Evil franchise.
"Then we look to what our internal goals were and what Capcom asked us to do and I think we accomplished what they wanted to do--we took the Resident Evil franchise in a different direction."
GameSpot has reached out to Slant Six for comment, but as of press time, the company had not responded.
The PC version of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is due out on May 18, and Slant Six just last week revealed a new mystery project, Strata Scavenger. For more on Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, check out GameSpot's review.
"In regards to expectations set by Capcom for Operation Raccoon City, Kerr said the Canadian developer was successful in creating the first third-person squad-based shooter in the history of the Resident Evil franchise. " If makin the 1st Squad based shooter in the RE universe is your idea of success then by all means pat yourself on the back but the game while not completely horrible was still a failure and a complete letdown to RE fans.
Nice set of excuses. "We gave Capcom what they wanted." Pretty sure Capcom didn't come to you and say "Make a poorly designed and unbalanced squad based RE shooter." Though I honestly blame Capcom not S6. When you hire a company that has made nothing but poorly designed and unbalanced games, you're going to get a poorly designed and unbalanced game.
Sad fact: Had they just blatantly ripped off Left 4 Dead's game play and overall design and let it steep for a few hours in the 16+ years worth of Resident Evil atmosphere that's been richly established over three generations of consoles, they would have crafted an infinitely better finished product than this steaming pile of post Arby's dook they call a game. You're Capcom, ffs. Don't feel the need to be avant-garde on our account. L4D beat you to the co-op punch 4 years ago. The wheel has been established. Roll with it. Don't carve it into a square.
Want higher marks Slant 6? Make a game where you don't have to squint and strain your eyes when you're simply trying to play the game because its too dark. The first boss battle right out the gate was cheap and stupid. (What was with the invisible wall and being unable to turn around?!) Oh and bullet damage? There virtually is none! It shouldn't take 2 clips to kill something, let alone a human. And lets not even get into the incredibly short game length and crappy ending....That's why your marks sucked. Next time, consult other game developers and ask them how they didn't blow it.
They took Resident Evil in a direction it shouldn't have gone. I mean come on. Like i said before i'd rather have a RE: Outbreak remake as oppose to this garbage.
"Calls reception challenging" ...in other words, reception was bad cause the game sucks. "accomplished what capcom asked for" In other words, a cheap rehash to milk the dying series for a little more cash.. capcom..i am disappoint
This is my break down of the game, lousy single player game, horrid companion AI ruins the single player experience. As a coop with friends however its a whole different experience and quite fun. Sorta like Borderlands, with 3 friends it was tons of fun however play it by yourself and it soon becomes Boredlands.
Not sure who to blame. I think the idea of playing as Umbrella operatives doing the cover-up is awesome. As far as I can tell, the biggest complaints were on the programming side. I want to say action games aren't where Resident Evil should be, but I think the bad marks came from stuff like lacking any innovation, bad AI, and blatantly reoccurring glitches. Resident Evil's new direction is a bad idea, but I'm not sure if those are things you can blame on Capcom.
Capcom set you guys up... Sorry but that's all I can see when I read what they are doing to RE6. New direction but had to throw a decoy. This game should have a way to jump at different angles (gears of war style) and this game would have been pretty darn good. Game is way too dark tho...
@maester334 I wasn't the one complaining about the cloned enemies. xolivierx said this game should be rated low just based on the fact that all the zombie look the same, but then he says CoD and GoW are great games. But those games had cloned enemies as well.
@xolivierx CoD didn't do anything innovative, there were many shooters just like it before it came out, all they did was made it prettier. Also there are many things in ORC besides just shooting zombies. The fact that you can become inflicted and become a zombie yourself is something I haven't seen in a shooter before, being able to control bioweapons is pretty awesome as well, yes this game isn't the greatest single player, but its not meant to be single player, its meant for you and 3 friends to play together. Sorta like your rebuttal of who plays CoD single player anyways. But you also said that the fact that the zombies all look pretty much the same means its score should be lowered, then you praise other games that do the exact same thing. How is that an intelligent arguement. Its like saying Mario Kart sucks because the driving is unrealistic, but need for speed is awesome even though the driving is unrealistic. Or saying superman is lame cause he wears tights but spiderman is cool.
@stan_boyd but you do realize alot of games clone enemies right? l4d for instance that game had the same 4 zombies and maybe a boss on every level did it not? but people believe it was a great game i agree but the fact that some things are clone in ORC the game is still well designed and when you push around the flaws (which aren't many) its a pretty decent game atleast 7.5 worthy people are being critical and probably never even played it lol
But yet, some people enjoy their games re-heated, with capital flaws, with no replay value. Just like some people give Dead Island a rating of 9; the very same people that don't mind shedding 60$ on a broken zombie game. Next time you talk trash, bring something intelligent to the table or at least try to refute my arguments with something factual instead of being a troll!
@stan_boyd ...I like your cheap shot at the friend comment..but I'm not going to go in that direction. Yeah there is Coop, but I'd rather play a good game having a coop mode. It's just funny you could not deny anything other than, well, you did refute any of my points, you just bashed at me having no gaming friends(LOL) and you took what I said about a few games and twisted it in your own words. COD was innovative, you should jump into a Delorean and go back in time if you can't acknowledge this. As for the enemies being the same, here's a question to you : WHO PLAYS COD FOR THE SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN? As for Gears of War, when it came out, it had amazing graphics, amazing gameplay, it had been a while since we had not seen a game like this. And about James Bond 007 if you can't see past the russians, well, I could go on and on about James Bond 007 positive aspects. The amazing story/missions, the difficulty settings, the awards(yes, it's because of games like this we now have trophies my dear stan_boyd pal), the replay value, there was even some kind of multiplayer thingy although with no online option, the musical score, and at the time the graphics were top notch. I'm not even a fan of COD, Halo nor Gears of War, and it does not take a dummy to see those games were fresh and added something new to the gaming world.
@xolivierx "This mess is just a broken clone of various shooters with zombies. Just the fact the zombies are really the same 2 zombies cloned over and over with the same clothes coming at you is enough to give this game a score of 7." You are hilarious, you talk about how you are older and more mature than all these preteens, yet you make a dumb post saying that CoD and GoW were innovative. well CoD you fight the same terrorists in the same clothes in a shorter than short campaign. GoW you fight the same locusts in the same clothes over and over in a shorter than short campaign, yet you say that those games are good even though they have the same formula that you say makes this game bad? Halo you fight the same grunts and elites over and over but with different colored armor to distinguish them, James Bond same green russian uniformed guys over and over, Doom same space marines and imps over and over etc etc etc. Your own arguement makes no sense. Oh and there is plenty of reason to replay the game, its called coop with friends, but you would only know this if you had any.
@tbone19762008 I feel like the game is receiving low scores only because people were expecting something else. I haven't been very active with the Resident Evil games but this one looks like it could be fun.
@Gadeos I have'nt played the game but I watched a couple of reviews and it just seemed like a broken game, with broken mechanics, you would have thought Capcom would have not let this franchise fall into thewrong hands by now, not that every RE game has been absolutly stella but it seems like they're just bending this IP over and leaving it exsposed for any one to defile it now.
Overall game score 7/10...yeah it has some glitches but i like the direction they are going and they will get better...i have played resident evil since the beginning and personally i hated resident evil 4 and 5 and was kinda getting bored with the series....good job to Capcom for taking a risk it will pay off in the end...and i will buy resident evil 6 now for sure
I don't know about anyone else but I wanted to play as survivors, scrounging for ammunition and weapons with gameplay like Resident Evil 5. I don't think playing as soul-dead militant types helped it any.
they should put the age range of users right next to their username or a code like 1=0 to 7..... 2 =8 to 12.....3 = 13 to 17.....4 = 18 to 25......5 = 26 and up....they use that system on another website I use for movie reviews which actually lets me not account for comments from people under 17...sorry but I'm 28 and I've experienced other games than COD and Gears, which may sounds silly, but gives me some kind of wisdom and adds credibility to my comments, whereof most teens only see black and white, being the origin of most hates comments and also accounts for games getting scores of either 1 or 10
@Gadeos it's always funny to see smart comments by people telling it like it is, getting low scores from ignorant people. I gave you a ''thumbs up'' =) and remember, all the hatred from those COD-loving-preteenagers could not hurt you with a thousand thumbs down
So much hate here.....the game is bad, accept it. Yes it's not really Resident Evil, it's just a zombie shooter. I HATE shooters. Even though I hate them I can tell when a shooter succeeds. The 1st Call of Duty succeeded, as did the 1st Gears of War. Why? Because they were INNOVATIVE and they were GOOD. The 1st Halo, Killzone, Doom, James Bond 007 on N64...these games deserved high scores. This mess is just a broken clone of various shooters with zombies. Just the fact the zombies are really the same 2 zombies cloned over and over with the same clothes coming at you is enough to give this game a score of 7. Add to that the bad gameplay, the ''stick to wall'' thingy, the shorter than short campaign with no replay value, and the problems encountered with the multiplayer, it DOES deserve a low score. This game is just a game where the cons far overweight the good. If you can't see that I think you really lack tastes in terms of games; you would play just about any shooter as long as it gives you cheap quick thrill and has online play. I value my time spent gaming, and also the money I spend on games. There is no way a grown up with a right state of mind would value this game worthy of buying over another good game.
Anyone rating this game below a 7/10 has no idea how to rate a game, if this game was even close to a 4/10 or 4.5/10 then it would be unplayable basicly, glitching all the time, the graphic would be way outdated, there would be no character options etc... seriously, maybe they should have left resident evil out of the name but its a solid third person zombie type shooter and the idiot on gamespot that reviewed the game probably didnt even play the game or dont like slant six? i truely believe operation racoon city is better then resident evil 5 allday, i didnt like resident evil 5, now that should have got a 4/10
I really was hoping this was gonna be a nice game, kind of "GoW with zombies? yes!!!" What the hell happened??? They had the perfect ingredients to make a master piece there, it wasn't a whole new concept rather a succesfull frinchise. On the other hand, isn't Capcom staff aware of their Dev's work??? They don't do supervision or something like that??? No product quality check? I bet they thought "OK, we need thisgame in current fiscal year, so do whatever you can but do it fast!" This is what happens when making games becomes just a money making thing rather than making fine pieces of entertainment (ironically, if yo DO make a fine game, money will fall like rain...)
Dear Capcom, Stop giving all your titles to outside developers. You're not Activision. It hasn't been going very well for you.
I quite like the game, it could have been much better however if we had a better monster/zombie to soldier ratio, and if we had much better level design
Hmm...I'm starting to get the feeling that this would have been the fate of both Megaman Universe and Megaman Legends 3. Perhaps they were better off never seeing the light of day. I'm starting to think that Capcom feels that "if it doesn't involve Street Fighter, don't bother". I can only hope the upcoming Dragon's Dogma doesn't turn out like this. Overall, March has been kind of disappointing. Someone over on the GameFAQs boards already mentioned this, but I don't think there has every been a 'big' Tuesday (where several big name games were released) in which all the releases were met with lukewarm to poor receptions. Armored Core V is clearly a niche series, but for both Resident Evil and Ninja Gaiden to be slammed by critics and have such polarizing community receptions...perhaps it's a sign of the times?
@AuronAXE - thank you man - you speak my mind!!!!!!!!! Siant six - admire it - your intention was to make sh**y game and you acomplished it. I don't know how those stupid studios convince the creators (!!!) to handle developing of future titles in famed series to them, but they sure succeeded. Look at this sh**y RE title, look at last SH games. They so far from original spirit that drove first game; and what i think - i bet many of you considered this as an option- that this all like giant conspiracy plan to fill the market with mediocrity or, read it - sh**y games. Man,what tha hell happened ? Hey devs+pubs, are you so numb that you can't create something worthy of shadow of great games from the past ??
I sort of feel like the "did exactly what Capcom wanted us to do thing" was almost sarcastic. This mistake of a game shows Capcom that Americanizing everything would eventually kill the company. Capcom will push in this action direction and find Resident Evil just another shade of grey in a sea of grey. I at least hope the development team isn't punished for following a tight budget, short deadlines and ridiculous expectations.
What let's the game down for me is the fact that even on the easiest difficulty (which I had to drop it to because I was getting fed up of being killed due to inadequate team mates) the a.i. squad members walk off and stand in a corner shooting at nothing during fire fights! I know the game is supposed to be multiplayer but regardless of this, this should NOT happen. What looked a promising game from trailers (like last years "Dead Island") was ruined by poor gameplay. Thank God I rented rather than spending 40quid on it!
Well, I really wanted to like this game, and was hoping it was going to be good, but I'm disappointed that it wasn't. I thought that the premise behind the game was so creative and interesting.
Stated that they delivered on what Capcom asked for. So I guess Capcom asked for idiotic AI where enemies just stand there and let you shoot at them, even more stuped AI of your computer controlled squad mates and also enemies that are nothing more then bullet sponges.
Really?, they need to learn from the mistakes of this game...?, it shouldn't have even been so bad. The gameplay mechanics are so god damn terrible, everything was terrible. Like many titles that have come out, they disapoint and had nothing but hype built up instead of putting that money towards making it a better game. Companys have been pushing enough crap out and cutting games into pieces to sell as DLC's, im having enough of it all. They just don't know wtf they are doing anymore, turning into cheap profit rather then brining great games to players. Its all about hype and fking flashy graphics. This company failed hard, and Capcom is equaly to blame.
and i have to say not haveing a online pass helped this game alot HEAR THAT EA?! yeah you aswell THQ smarten up.
the games really fun but i have to say it wasnt a game il remember or wanna rebuy if it got lost if this is the way your going capcom i think il stick to renting sorry.
Leave RE alone!!! Leave Britney Alone!!! I mean stop making games they are ruining the franchise!!! And the movies please stop!!! L-E-A-V-E-R-E-A-L-O-N-E!!! (and Britney too) XO XO :D:D:D:D:D
I was considering this a day 1 purchase.... Before I saw the COUNTLESS reviews pour in with terrible scores and comments about broken mechanics. I decided to pass. I like Resident Evil too much to sully it with a cheap cash grab lousy game. My question is this: the developer clearly knew there were issues before launch. If so, did they ask Capcom for more time? Did Capcom not care? If they didn't know there were issues, then I suppose they should have shuttered their doors.
